It's pretty bad you can buy porn on the net but they won't let you bet on a game. Who gives these credit card companies the right to tell us how we can spend our money and the government too? Isn't there BIGGER things in the world to worry about than someone betting their OWN money on a game?

you can't blame the credit card companies. . .

. . . it is not our money which they are telling us how to spend, it is THEIR money which is loaned. . . and perhaps not paid back. I have little sympathy for them, but they get smoked if a person maxes out a $20,000.00 card (or two or three) dumping money into an offshore, then files Chapter 7 BK. Or simply doesn't pay.

There are easier ways to deposit the money, all things considered. I'm not aware of similar restrictions on wire transfers. Most books also take Western Union and will credit you for the fee. I prefer to use a local--if it's someone you trust, you don't have to worry about being stiffed, the vig is less complicated (and more favorable) and the legal implications are minor. Booking is generally a felony; gambling itself is generally a misdemeanor and is rarely prosecuted. The worst thing that can happen is that your guy gets busted during a week that he owes you money!

some heavy bookies got busted in the Montreal area around 5 months ago

they got some fines (around $220,000)

but they were up and running 24 hours later

they gladly paid the fine money, after all, they takes bets of millions of dollars each week and that is no bullshit

My friend got nailed, for bookmaking. Had to forfeit 91,000 cash from his house, 2 cars, the state cut his throat. Day after the superbowl 2 years ago, still hasn't gone to court yet, he still takes bets. They let him keep 8000, what a fucking joke!! Your better off shooting heroin than taking a bet, cops take it easy on crackheads around here!!

it appears to me that the laws are much more severe for bookies in the US compared to up here in Canada

they sort of give you a slap on the wrist and thats all (although $220 k would be a large slap for me )

the authorities are VERY STRICT ON MARIJUANA AND DRUGS in Canada and that is why i have left that industry over 5 years ago

I have even tried DEBIT cards at some places and they won't do it and that IS YOUR money....... What do you think of that cause i think it's still bullshit and on the other cards yes they do loan just like they do for GUNS,CASH,PORN, and other items which can be worse and also not paid back but they are fine with that.... RIGHT?

I'm not defending the credit card industry--I'm just saying that they do have an interest in making sure that a card isn't used for gambling purposes. Do you know how easy it is to discharge credit card debt in a Chapter 7 bankruptcy? Pretty damn easy, as long as you don't have substantial assets or income. If I run up $50,000 in credit card debt betting sports, and can't pay it back, I'm thinking BK is a pretty good idea. There isn't much a bank can do to object to discharge, either--the reason for the withdrawals rarely comes up, and is of little relevance anyway.

Debit cards are a different story, I agree--that is your money that the bank is telling you how to spend. But your bitch isn't a matter of "rights"--i.e., what right does my credit card company have to keep me from using my card for gambling? If a bank won't let you do that, tough shit. Find another card. The bank has just as much right to tell you what expenditures they will not allow as you do to withdraw your money and find another bank.

By the way, a card user is far less likely to max out his balances on porn, guns, etc. than he is to do so on gambling. The issue isn't moral, it's economic.
