    Tips and Trends

Detroit Red Wings at Philadelphia Flyers (7 PM ET)

The Red Wings may be visiting Philadelphia at the right time. The Flyers own the league's worst home record and are last overall in the league. Philadelphia won for just the fourth time in 26 games at the Wachovia Center on Saturday. BIG EDGE: RED WINGS

Detroit will likely go with goaltender Joey MacDonald tonight, as six-time Vezina Trophy winner Dominik Hasek is day-to-day with tendinitis in his wrist and backup Chris Osgood is sidelined with a broken finger. SLIGHT EDGE: FLYERS

The Red Wings are 1-7 in their last eight games playing on one day of rest.

The home team is 11-0 in the last 11 meetings.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend......

      13) At mid/low-major level of college hoop, regular season is very important. Take Vermont's win at Albany Sunday; this is huge, since now, if Catamounts get to finals of America East, they host the game, which is a tremendous advantage. That is assuming Vermont holds on to top slot, which they should.

      12) Also, the way the NIT is set up, the regular season champ is guaranteed a slot in NIT, if they get beat in the conference tourney. For an America Wast team, the NIT is still big.

      11) Weird stat in Sunday's contest: game was in Albany, but Great Danes were just 1-3 from foul line, Vermont 21-31. It is noteworthy that UVM coach Lonergan won a D-III national title at Catholic U; coaches who win at the lower levels tend to do very well when given a chance at higher level.

      10) So much for Phil Mickelson's slump.

      9) I read an article last week on how the PGA Tour should do away with Q School, since the guys who make the Tour out of Q School don't do as well as Nationwide Tour graduates, so of course, John Mallinger, a Q School guy, cashes in for $374,000 with his third-place finish at Pebble Beach.

      8) Cornell's last three hoop games were decided by total of 4 points, with the home team winning all three games.

      7) Clippers are an amazing 0-13 vs spread when they play the first of two consecutive nights. They've covered spread on seven of last nine back ends, so go figure.

      6) Duke has now lost four games in row, their longest skid in 11 years; they're no lock to make the NCAAs, at this point.

      5) Put it this way; Maryland beat them Sunday, and the fans didn't rush the court, highly unusual for a Duke loss.

      4) Memo to the nitwits who run the Devil Rays: How about trying to win this year? Scanning last year's stats, they gave a total of 737 plate appearances to Damon Hollins and Travis Lee, both of whom were later released, while Delmon Young was kept under wraps, so he could be eligible for Rookie of Year this season, while Elijah Dukes was kept in minors for so long, he eventually snapped and had to be suspended.

      3) If I was a Devil Ray fan, I want to see the best guys on the field, and I don't give a rat's ass about awards. Improvement in the win column would be all I cared about.

      2) Oh, and try pitching Kazmir more than 145 innings in 2007; he actually gives you a chance to win games. 70 wins is most in Tampa history; they owe their fans to at least top that this season, or why would anyone go support them?

      1) It will be interesting to see if they can trade the oft-injured Rocco Baldelli for pitching; they've apparently been trying. Lets see if the Wall Street boys have the onions to pull it off.
