      Tips and Trends

Portland Trail Blazers at Washington Wizards (1 PM ET)
Washington star Gilbert Arenas proclaimed he would top the 50-point mark against the Blazers as revenge against Portland head coach Nate McMillan, who was one of two assistants responsible for cutting him from Team USA over the summer. The other was Phoenix head coach Mike D'Antoni, and Arenas put up 54 points on the Suns back in December. BIG EDGE: WIZARDS
The Wizards have dropped three of four without forward Antawn Jamison, who will miss the next 3-6 weeks with a knee injury. EDGE: BLAZERS
Portland's Zach Randolph is averaging just 12.3 points per game during his career against the Wizards, his second-lowest average against any team and 12 points below his season average. EDGE: WIZARDS
Washington will be playing short-handed in the frontcourt, as Etan Thomas was suspended two games for fighting with teammate Brendan Haywood during practice on Friday. EDGE: BLAZERS

The road team is 8-1 ATS in the last nine meetings.
OVER is 10-4 in Washington's last 14 home games.

San Antonio Spurs at Miami Heat (ABC | 1 PM)
The Heat face a San Antonio team that is currently playing its toughest stretch of the season. The Spurs are 2-3 during their eight-game "Rodeo" road trip and are trying to bounce back from Friday's 106-104 loss to the Orlando Magic. EDGE: HEAT
San Antonio blew out Miami by 20 points in the last meeting nearly three months ago, and Miami is just now starting to turn things around winning four of their past five games. EDGE: HEAT
The Spurs have won nine of the last 10 meetings against the Heat, with their only loss coming in Miami on February 13th, 2005. BIG EDGE: SPURS

The UNDER is 11-2 in the last 13 meetings.

Los Angeles Clippers at Indiana Pacers (2:30 PM ET)
The Clippers lost their first seven road games of the season and are just 8-17 away from Staples Center. EDGE: PACERS
Indiana had won five in a row at Conseco Fieldhouse going into a season-high six-game homestand, but the Pacers fell to 0-3 during the stretch with Friday's 102-95 loss to Denver. EDGE: CLIPPERS
Los Angeles has one win in Indianapolis in its last 13 visits. BIG EDGE: PACERS

Los Angeles Lakers at Cleveland Cavaliers (ABC | 3:30 PM ET)
The Cavaliers have won three of their last four games despite some inconsistency from their star player LeBron James. He came into Friday's game against Miami averaging 16.8 points on 39.4 percent shooting in his last four games - almost 10 points below his season scoring average - but broke out of his slump with a game-high 29 points.SLIGHT EDGE: CAVS
Cleveland is closing a five-game homestand. The Cavs are 19-7 at home this season, but they have lost their last three home games against teams with winning records. EDGE: LAKERS

The Lakers are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 Sunday games.

Dallas Mavericks at Philadelphia 76ers (6 PM ET)
Dallas has won six of seven away from home and its 17-6 road record is second-best in the NBA behind Phoenix's 19-6 mark. BIG EDGE: MAVS
Philadelphia has won six of its last 11 games. Before that stretch, the 76ers had lost 29 of their last 36 games. SLIGHT EDGE: 76ERS

The 76ers are 1-6 ATS in their last seven games as a home underdog.
The UNDER is 4-1 in the last five meetings.

Chicago Bulls at Phoenix Suns (8 PM ET)
Phoenix has won eight straight home games against Chicago by an average margin of 12.3 points per game, with the last three of those contests having been decided by an average of 16 points. BIG EDGE: SUNS
Suns point guard Steve Nash has sat out the last 2 1/2 games with a sore shoulder but said he was feeling better Friday, and his coach sounded confident the five-time All-Star could be back in the lineup against the Bulls. EDGE: SUNS
Chicago is 8-17 away from home and 2-4 on its season high-tying seven-game road trip. Chicago has lost three straight, including a disheartening 123-121 overtime defeat to Golden State on Friday. EDGE: SUNS

The Bulls are 3-15 ATS in their last 18 games versus the NBA Pacific Division.

Atlanta Hawks at Golden State Warriors (9 PM ET)
Atlanta had a 6-15 road record this season before winning its last four road games, its best such streak since 1999. The team hasn't won five in a row away from home since 1999. EDGE: HAWKS
Golden State is averaging 105.5 points to rank third in the NBA in scoring but is also giving up a league-high 107.4 per game. BIG EDGE: OVER
The Hawks have lost four straight at Golden State since February of 2002. Golden State is 18-8 at home this season. EDGE: WARRIORS

            Six-Pack for Sunday

            The Gong Show edition

-- The Gong Show was a television variety show spoof that was broadcast on NBC and in syndication from 1976 until 1980. It was always fun, often bizarre.

-- One of semi-regulars on show was the Unknown Comic, (Murray Langston), he was stand-up comic who told corny jokes while wearing a paper bag over his head.

-- Twelve-year-old Andrea McArdle appeared on an early show in 1976, shortly before winning the lead role in the hit Broadway musical "Annie."

-- The biggest Gong Show-related show biz success was singer Cheryl Lynn, who was signed to a record contract as a result of her appearance and recorded the top 20 disco hit "Got To Be Real."

-- Host Chuck Barris was also the creator, who had shows to his credit like Dating Game and Newlywed Game.

-- Barris was a vendor at Phillies' games during the 1950 World Series; he also wrote a book, in which he claimed to be a CIA hit man. Like I said, always fun, often bizarre.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college hoop Saturday

              13) I enjoyed watching Long Beach State play last year, so it was good to catch up with the 49ers on TV last night; they're up to their old tricks again, rallying from 10 down at half not only to win at end, but to thoroughly entertain.........

              12) Tie game, last possession, Long Beach ball; Nixon, who has a Barkleyesque body and no concept of shot selection, just dribbles between circles for 15-20 seconds, then takes a horrible fadeaway jumper with a foot on the arc, a shot that Santa Barbara had to be glad he took. Of course, it goes in, so 49ers lead by hoop with 0:00.4 left.

              11) Problem is, the Long Beach subs think the game is over; they storm the court, and get a technical, so Gauchos get to take two free throws that would tie game, plus the ball. This being Long Beach, UCSB kid misses one free throw, 49ers are winners, and are in first place in Big West, but it wasn't easy. It never is with the 49ers, but its usually fun to watch.

              10) On the other end of the fun scale, Bob Knight has 5-game losing streak for first time since 1972, at Indiana.

              9) Oklahoma State is 4-0 in overtime games this season, with a very thin bench. Sean Sutton has done good job in Stillwater.

              8) John Wooden must have loved those black uniforms the Bruins wore at West Virginia Saturday. Maybe not.

              7) Southern Illinois made 8-11 treys, shot 65% from floor and continued their mastery of Creighton; they're 6-0 against the Bluejays over last three seasons, mostly close games.

              6) Kentucky has now lost five games in row vs Florida.

              5) Wright State held Butler to 36% from floor, beat Bulldogs and appear to be serious challenger for Horizon title, all in the first year in Dayton for Coach Brownell, who came to Wright State from NC-Wilmington.........

4)........which has gone in dumper, losing at home to William & Mary Saturday. Seahawks have falled hard and quickly.

              3) Josh Carter nailed 8-11 treys, Texas A&M won sandwich game at Nebraska, after playing Texas, Kansas in previous two games. If they shoot well, Aggies will go to Final Four.

              2) Oregon hasn't been same since Aaron Brooks missed the Washington game; they lost tough home tilt to Arizona on Saturday. Ernie Kent appeared to collapse on sideline after Ducks took lead in last minute, but he coached on, while he held left hand to right side of his chest. Hope he's OK.

              1) Tennessee stormed out to 18-3 lead vs Vanderbilt, looked very sharp in trouncing good Commodore team, 84-57. Vols hit 12-25 treys; guess you always look sharper when shots are falling, but Tennessee was quick to loose balls vs Vandy.
