    Six-Pack for Friday

-- Wade Phillips is Cowboys' fifth head coach in last eleven years. Dallas hasn't won playoff game in a decade.

-- Butler was 20-33 from arc in win at Cleveland State; teams that can shoot are always tough to beat.

-- Some conferences have seasons where the teams have no form, and this is one of those years for the Big West.

-- Oregon is 8-4 in Pac-10, but they have no wins by more than eight points.

-- Right now, Arizona is Top 25 squad out of reputation.

-- Weber State hit 11 of 17 treys Wednesday, but was just 15-32 from foul line. Kids don't practice foul shots enough.

Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts with weekend here

      13) Is there an easier coaching job in America than being QB coach for the Colts? I mean, if you had a coaching buddy and you wanted to set him up to succeed, you get him that job, so no way was Jim Caldwell getting hired by the Cowboys.

      12) Caldwell had a poor record as head man at Wake Forest, which has won lot of games with his replacement. I'd be very surprised if Caldwell got an NFL head coaching job.

      11) A's signed Shannon Stewart to 1-year deal, bad news for Dan Johnson; if Stewart plays LF for A's, that makes Swisher the first baseman. Mike Piazza will DH, which leaves Johnson sitting on the bench.

      10) Stewart has .299 career BA in 12 seasons; he once scored 100+ runs in four straight years for Toronto, so this is veteran player who fills the role Jay Payton had last season.

      9) Stewart was traded for Bobby Kielty on July 16, 2003; now, he is competing/platooning with Kielty for the A's LF job.

      8) They had 70 inches of snow up in Oswego this week, up on Lake Ontario, only 2.5 hours from here. We've been lucky with snow so far this winter, haven't gotten much. .

      7) Hofstra led Drexel by 14 in first half, but Dragons showed a lot of spunk and won in overtime, 95-87, in game where three starters on both sides fouled out. Hofstra is very thin. First home loss for Hofstra in almost two years.

      6) UMass drilled Rhode Island, in meeting of top two teams in Arlantic 14, which looks like a one-bid league.

      5) Sun Belt is another one-bid league; last night, So Alabama survived Western Kentucky in OT, 73-71, in tussle between the two top squads in that conference.

      4) This comment was offered by the color analyst on Nevada-Fresno State game Thursday night: "He has a great looking shot; it just doesn't go in often enough." If you say so........

      3) How did Memphis get left out of the Big East? Louisville, Cincinnati, Marquette, DePaul, but no Memphis? Tigers have football, too; their basketball team is so much better than the rest of Conference USA, it can't help them much in March.

      2) There are only eight seniors starting in the Pac-10, so they should get even better next season. Washington St's dream season continued, avenging an earlier loss at Stanford, easily beating the Cardinal, 58-45.

      1) At some point, we've all wanted to be rich, famous or both, but maybe its not all its cracked up to be. Anna Nicole Smith seemed to have everything; money, fame, looks, but now she is dead at age 39, and that is very sad.

                Friday, February 9

                Harvard at Princeton
The loss of seven-footer Brian Cusworth (eligibility) certainly leaves a big void in the Crimson lineup as the senior was averaging 17.4 points and 9.1 rebounds to lead the team. But Harvard showed it could still win without him as they knocked off Cornell (65-64) last Saturday behind Evan Harris' 18 points and 10 boards. Princeton has just had a hard time winning period as the Tigers have dropped five straight by an average margin of 17.8 points. The Crimson look like a good underdog pick (+10 1/2) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Harvard favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Harvard (+10 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                  New Jersey at Boston
The Celtics are setting records in all the wrong places. They've lost 16 straight, breaking the team record of 13, and have also dropped 12 straight at home, breaking another record. On top of it all the injuries keep piling up. On top of Paul Pierce and Tony Allen, Wally Szczerbiak reinjured his ankle in the last game that may keep him out of tonight's game. But as bad as things are, the Nets may actually provide an opportunity for Boston to break out of its funk. New Jersey has lost four of its last five with the only win coming by just two points (87-85) at lower-rated Atlanta. That win was also just their seventh in 25 away from home. Boston looks like a decent underdog pick (+5) according to Dunkel, which has the Celtics favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Boston (+5). Here are all of today's games.
