    Six-Pack for Wednesday

-- Texas Rangers have to pay 33.3% of the $81M that Alex Rodriguez is owed from 2008-2010. Rodriguez can opt out of his contract after 2007, which might bail the Rangers out.

-- Odd that Steve Nash got hurt playing in a game that was rescheduled because of snow. Winning championships is tough; you have to avoid bad luck like that.

-- Dominic Rhodes' 113 rushing yards was most ever in a Super Bowl by a running back who didn't start.

-- Virginia is going to make NCAA tournament, but they do need Arizona, Gonzaga to get hot down stretch, since they beat both teams. They need Duke to play better, too.

-- Texas Tech blew home game vs Nebraska Tuesday, on a 3-pointer on buzzer, after they had an 8-point lead late. The Raiders are now squarely on the bubble and fading, losing their last four games.

-- When NC State beat Virginia Tech, North Carolina a week ago, their starters played 356 out of a possible 400 minutes.

      Wednesday's List of 13: Random mid-week thoughts......

      13) Consensus is, when NCAA pairings come out, there will not be much difference between the 5-11 seeds, which could create some unusual first-round pointspreads.

      12) Over last 20 years, only four 11-seeds have been favored over a 5-seed in first round: Providence ('88), Okla State ('93), California ('96) and Rhode Island ('99); only Okla State won.

      11) Detroit Red Wings are only third-ever NHL team to win in consecutive road games, when they trailed both games by 2+ goals.in the third period.

      10) Marvin Harrison told a Sports Illustrated reporter that he wouldn't mind not making the Hall of Fame, because then he wouldn't have to make a speech. Harrison is going to be in the Hall of Fame. Not sure if they require a speech.

      9) Yale's upset of Pennsylvania Saturday threw the Ivy race wide open; there is no conference tournament in Ivy League, so every regular season game is important. Yale now has shot to get to season's final weekend with chance to win the Ivy.

      8) The Super Bowl was aired in 33 languages in 232 countries.

      7) Phil Mickelson's first three starts this season, where he is usually strongest, out west: T45-T51-MC. A shaky start.

      6) The European Tour will have run 17 events this season in 2007 before they actually have a tournament in Europe.

      5) In their last eleven games, Nets won two games by a point and lost five others by either one or two points. Needless to say, its fun to watch their games.

      4) Couple of younger people asked me about the kind of QB Archie Manning was; he's nothing like his sons- I would say he was a righthanded Steve Young, stuck in pre-free agency on the worst team in league. Great runner, improvisor; he was Player of Year one year, for getting Saints to 8-8. As a college player, he is still an icon Mississippi.

      3) Nowadays, teams don't stay awful the way the Saints did for long time, so Archie would have had shot at playoffs, or he could have bolted the Saints for free agency. All of this is part of why the Mannings stiffed the Chargers; Archie was afraid that Eli would experience what he went through.

      2) Amazing night of college basketball Wednesday; rivalries all over the board: Pitt-WVa, Georgia-Florida, Oklahoma State Oklahoma, Kansas-K-State, Duke-UNC, USC-UCLA. Be sure to hit the college hoop page, for analysis of every game.

      1) One thing for sure; when the Duke-Carolina game is on, no doubt it will accompanied by the mute button. Dick Vitale is unlistenable when he does those games.

                North Carolina at Duke
If Roy Williams' young Tar Heels needed a wake-up call as to how hard road games can be in the ACC, they got it at NC State over the weekend. But the road has not been unkind to UNC in general. When Carolina is on top of its game the venue does not seem to matter judging by lopsided wins at Clemson (77-55), Wake Forest (88-60) and most recently at Arizona (92-64). Duke, meanwhile, has not been at its best in Cameron Indoor thus far. The Blue Devils already have home losses to Virginia Tech (69-67) and Florida State (68-67), while needing a little extra time to get by Clemson (68-66). The Tar Heels look like a good pick to cover the Vegas line (-3 1/2) in this one according to Dunkel, which has UNC favored by 10 1/2. Dunkel Pick: North Carolina (-3 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                  LA Clippers at Cleveland
Offensive woes are costing Cleveland right now. The Cavaliers have the eighth-worst scoring offense in the league (95.9 points per game), while their 44.1 field goal percentage ranks 26th. The lack of offensive punch has been a big reason behind Cleveland's recent slide, which has seen LeBron James & Company drop eight of its last 12 while falling from first place in the East to fifth. The Clippers stumbled last night in New York (102-90) after leading at the half by 10. But overall L.A. is playing better ball right now and comes in having won seven of its last 10 with Elton Brand (23.0 points and 14.0 rebounds over last three games) leading the way. The Clippers look like a good underdog pick (+5 1/2) in this one according to Dunkel, which has L.A. favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: LA Clippers (+5 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

There are a plethora of rivalry games on tap Wednesday, so let’s take a look at several of these games before exploring a few Bonus Nuggets.

                          **Pittsburgh at West Virginia**

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Pittsburgh (20-3 straight up, 12-7 against the spread) as a two-point favorite.

--Pitt has had an entire week to prep for this trip to Morgantown. The Panthers, who are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games, will be looking for their fourth consecutive win both SU and ATS. They are well rested after winning 65-59 at Villanova last Monday as two-point underdogs.

--West Virginia (18-4 SU, 13-5 ATS) was the nation’s premier money maker during the first few months of the season, but the Mountaineers are just 3-4 ATS in their last seven games. Nevertheless, dating back to last year, they are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 lined games.

--West Virginia is unbeaten in 14 home games with an incredible 9-1 spread record.

--The ‘under’ is on a 6-2 run in Pitt’s last eight games with a total. However, the ‘over’ is 10-7 overall for the Panthers.

--The ‘over’ has hit in five straight West Virginia games with a total. The ‘over’ is 10-5 overall for the Mountaineers.

--The ‘under’ has cashed in three straight head-to-head meetings between these schools. In those three games, 129 combined points is the highest output.

                          **Florida at Georgia**

--Florida (21-2 SU, 8-7 ATS) has won 14 in a row and is the first team to garner all 72 first-place votes in this week’s AP poll in nearly two years. The Gators are off a 94-78 win over Tennessee as 15-point home favorites. Junior center Al Horford was the catalyst with 22 points, 13 rebounds and five assists.

--Georgia (13-8 SU, 6-9 ATS) has won 11 of 13 home games at Stegeman Coliseum, compiling a 4-3 ATS record.

--Since beating LSU with a Levi Stukes’ 3-pointer with 0.6 seconds left two Sundays ago, Dennis Felton’s team has suffered back-to-back losses on the road. The Dawgs lost Saturday night at Vanderbilt by a 66-61 count. UGA backers were burned as four-point underdogs, especially when you consider that Sundiata Gaines had a great look at a 15-footer at the buzzer, but his shot to cover the number misfired.

--The Gators have won six in a row over UGA, posting a 4-2 spread record. The Dawgs haven’t beaten UF since Feb. 17 of 2004, when Rashad Wright sparked UGA to victory by hitting a crucial 3-pointer at crunch time and holding Anthony Roberson to three points on 1-of-11 shooting.

--LVSC opened the Gators as seven-point favorites with a total of 142.

--The ‘under’ is 5-2 in the last seven head-to-head meetings between these long-time SEC adversaries.

--The ‘over’ is 10-5 for the Gators.

                          **Oklahoma at Oklahoma State**

--Oklahoma State (18-4 SU, 7-8 ATS) has lost seven in a row ATS, including Saturday’s 89-77 loss at Colorado.

--Oklahoma (13-8 SU, 11-5 ATS) might be in a transition year under first-year head coach Jeff Capel, but that hasn’t prevented the Sooners from being nasty at home. OU is 12-2 SU and 8-1 ATS in Norman.

--Oklahoma State is 2-2 ATS as an underdog this year.

--The ‘under’ is 11-5 for OU, 6-3 in its home games. On the other hand, ‘over’ is hitting at an 8-4 clip for the Cowboys.

--The ‘over’ is 3-1 in the last four editions of the Bedlam Rivalry.

--LVSC opened Oklahoma as a five-point favorite.

                          **North Carolina at Duke**

--North Carolina (20-3 SU, 14-5 ATS) saw its five-game winning streak (both SU and ATS) snapped Saturday in Raleigh when North Carolina State collected an 83-79 upset win as a 16 ½-point home underdog.

--Duke (18-5 SU, 12-10 ATS) will be looking to avoid its third straight loss following Sunday’s surprising 68-67 defeat to FSU as an 8 ½-point home ‘chalk.’ The Blue Devils lost Thursday at Virginia by a 68-66 count as two-point favorites.

--Duke is 4-0 ATS in its last four games as a home underdog.

--UNC is 5-2 ATS as a single-digit favorite.

--The underdog is 10-1 ATS in the last 11 Duke-UNC games.

--The ‘under’ is on an 11-4 run for the Tar Heels.

                          **Bonus Nuggets**

--Will Florida State hear its name called on Selection Sunday for the first time since 1998? The Seminoles haven’t tasted the Big Dance since the first year of Steve Robinson’s disastrous tenure in Tallahassee, but they appear to be in good standing after winning for the first time ever at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Sunday. Leonard Hamilton’s team now owns quality wins over Florida, Duke, Virginia Tech, Maryland and Providence. The ‘Noles have won five of their last six games, going 4-1-1 ATS over that stretch. They are four-point underdogs Wednesday at Clemson.

--If you weren’t sold on Texas A&M, you are now. The Aggies went into Lawrence and beat Kansas on Saturday night, and they turned around to drill Texas at home 48 hours later. That’s impressive, very impressive.

--Texas A&M head coach Billy Gillespie has a 63-22 (74 percent) record during his three seasons in College Station.

--Tennessee guard Chris Lofton returned to action last night when the Vols beat LSU, 70-67. Lofton clearly wasn't at full strength, playing only 21 minutes and scoring just eight points. The SEC's leading scorer was of 1-of-5 shooting from the floor, 5-of-5 from the charity stripe.
