        Dunkel

        Saturday, February 3

        Louisville at Villanova
It took Louisville a while to get going as the Cardinals suffered early-season defeats to Dayton and UMass and then started out just 2-2 in Big East play with losses to Notre Dame on the road and Marquette at home. But since the Marquette game Rick Pitino's squad has played with more defensive intensity and the result has been four straight wins, including victories over UConn and Syracuse. In three of those wins (DePaul, UConn and Cincinnati) the Cardinals held the opposition to an average of just 52.33 points. Today the Cards face a Villanova team that has stumbled since beating Norte Dame and Texas in back-to-back games. The Wildcats come in having lost two straight, including to Pittsburgh (65-59) at home on Monday in which the Wildcats shot just 38 percent from the field. Louisville looks like a good underdog pick (+5 1/2) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Cardinals favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Louisville (+5 1/2). Minnesota at Phoenix
The Wild have put together a nice stretch that coincides with the return of Marian Gaborik from injury. Minnesota is 7-3-2 since Gaborik's return with their star adding nine goals and four assists to the cause. Gaborik is coming off his best offensive game of the year (two goals and an assist) in a 5-3 win over Colorado on Thursday. The Wild have won three of their last four from Phoenix, which comes in having dropped two of its last three overall. Minnesota looks like a good underdog pick in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Wild favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Minnesota (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                  Saturday, February 3

                  Denver at Sacramento
It's been 10 years and 19 straight losses since Denver came away from Arco Arena with a victory. In fact, Sacramento's 19-game home winning streak is the longest against any team in the NBA. Complicating matters for Denver is the fact that Allen Iverson will miss his third straight game with a sprained ankle and the flu. But this Sacramento team has not been as dominant at home as in years past. The Kings' 12-11 record doesn't compare favorably with the 27-14 record last season or the 30-11 record in 2004-05. And the Nuggets still have Carmelo Anthony, who took out his frustration at being overlooked for the All-Star team by scoring 33 last night in a 114-107 win over Portland. The Nuggets look like a good underdog pick (+6 1/2) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Denver favored straight up by 3. Dunkel Pick: Denver (+6 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...........

                            13) ESPNU has a college football signing day special on Wednesday at noon; we don't hear much about Signing Day here in the northeast, but, obviously enough, who wins on Wednesday will help determine who wins four and five years from now.

                            12) QB Ben Mauk, once a highly-touted recruit for Wake Forest, will transfer from Wake due to "academic" reasons. Translated, that means young Skinner played so well last year in relief of the injured Mauk, that it became academic that Mauk would be the backup, so he is transferring.

                            11) Phillie Phanatic made an appearance at the Old Dominion-Drexel game Thursday; Phanatic is this website's King of Mascots.

                            10) Drexel, Wichita State are both likely bubble teams on Selection Sunday; both teams have won at the Carrier Dome this season, so what does that say about Syracuse?

                            9) Wyoming, New Mexico both had guys suspended after their ugly brawl in Albuquerque Tuesday. From looks of it, Wyoming had better players suspended than the Lobos.

                            8) Funny thing about Florida State; their RPI is 24, but they need rival Florida to finish as #1 seed, since they beat the Gators, and that win will go long way to dragging Seminoles into Field of 65.

                            7) I don't understand how the RPI is formulated, but I have to question any ranking system that still has Arizona ranked 8th in country. They're in freefall right now, losing

                            6) Arizona 8th, Florida 17th? I don't think so.

                            5) That said, UConn is another slumping team; their RPI is now 92, and need to do lot of work to make the Big East tournament.

                            4) Part of reason Iona is 0-22 is that they are 333rd in country in 3-pt baskets and 258th in scoring from foul line; Gaels lead country by scoring 63.5% of their points on 2-point hoops, which really isn't a good thing.

                            3) Just about every high school/college basketball coach in America preaches "help defense", where teammates sag towards the ball, and move in to help should a teammate get beat off the dribble. In modern basketball, though, more offenses are being geared to exploiting help defenses to hit open 3's……

2)….which is why I think a new era in defense has started, where teams aggressively defend the arc, refusing to let teams beat them with 3's. You look at the leaders in terms of allowing fewest percentage of points allowed from arc, you see Indiana, Kansas St, Memphis, winning teams that play sturdy defense.

                            1) The day is coming where more coaches are not going to teach defenders to help as much, preferring to defend the shots that count for the most points.

                                Six-Pack for Saturday

-- Billy Joel is first person to sing National Anthem at two Super Bowls.
-- Indianapolis, Chicago are located closer than any two cities whose teams played against each other in Super Bowl.
-- I always wonder how different Super Bowl week is for assistant coaches, as opposed to a regular season game. Is the preparation the same, even with the game having much higher stakes?
-- I think some of the Colts' linemen would like to be included in Peyton Manning's commercial bonanza. After all, they do protect him.
-- Colts' assistant coach Leslie Frazier was a DB with the '85 Super Bowl champ Bears.
-- My Super Bowl pick; Indianapolis 28, Chicago 13.
