I think its sad when a Kentucky derby winner dies at such a young age. I have been to churchill 100 times and love those animals. There quite spectacular to see up close

i love horses too. but lets be honest here. barbaro had no business being alive, that injury was horrible. and 99.9 % of horses with similar injuries are euthanized immediately. some dont even make it off the track. it wasnt fair to that horse to try to keep it alive.

We both know the bottom line there was to recoup the $$$ invested in the horse, as well as the future $$$ from breeding. But I guarantee that horse was being treated better then at least half of us so as long as the horse wasn't in unmanageable pain, I was fine with them at least trying. If anything, it put some humanity into the attempt then to just euthanize at the track. It's not always necessary.

I'm not sure anyone ever thought there was any hope of being able to use him as a stud, given the severity of his rear leg injury. but maybe the owner held out slim hope.

The owners seemed to be genuinely affected by this. Now whether is was just seeing their money go up in smoke; who knows. But I am confident that didn't just spend all that money and time and effort for the hell of it. I am sure they were told there was a decent chance once several complications had passed. I didn't get the vibe they were putting the horse through hell and pain. Like I wrote earlier, that horse was WELL taken care of.

I think the owners showed a huge amount of love and compassion for that horse. They said they didnt care about his breeding ability, hell they are stinking rich anyways. Just my 2 cents

I am a W.A.S.P. (1/2 Sicilian though), I look at these animals as athletes, just more pure than the spoiled piece of shits I see on T.V. Horses do what they do because they are breed and trained for the competition. They don't prosper from it. They don't get arrested for weapons or drug charges etc.
The only thing they have in common with pro athletes is how impregnating many females is revered in their proffession.

It is SAD to me when a GREAT ATHLETE dies... But a horse dies as a result of "our" enjoyment. Not self induced....And Barbaro was great!!! Won on grass dirt whatever. He would have been special (IMO) like Seabiscuit or maybe Secretariat.

There is NO SHITTIER feeling then watching a horse you bet on break a leg and have to be euthanized. (in the world of betting and sports)

....and I am happy they tried to save this horse because I think it was done for unselfish reasons and I believe they may have learned ALOT about broken bones for horses. As you know horse bones shatter and don't break like humans.

I hear ya' wally! I love pets and my own mean the world to me. It's a very sad, sad event with Barbaro but personally, i think stories like Andre Waters and what happened to him last week was much sadder and i don't think one thread was posted about that. I agree with alot of what you say but even some of the worst character athletes out there have kids, wives & family who are mourning their loss and the trickle down effect is much greater. Hey, i hate Barry Bonds too but if something ever happened would i feel for his wife or kids? Yes. I know it is a touching story but not the same to me i guess.
