  • Basketball question for the players and ex-players

I've never played basketball at a competitive level. I don't know shit about the game. In football most of us know what wins games. Rushing the football. Good defense. No turnovers.

What wins games in the NBA? Good defense? Teams that shoot most FTs? Assists? Rebounds? Offensive rebounds?

I'd love to hear the theories of guys who have played the sport.

teams that gel together...play together on and off the court...good defense...non-selfish players...teams with a good point guard...good leader on and off the court...

you can pretty much say that the Suns will win the title..unless the Mavs make an upset bid...

IMO....Suns play a "crazy" style of hoops. And in the playoffs if they need a stop I'm not sure if they could get it. They try and outscore their opponents and I don't think that style wins playoff games. Not for sure but don't history show that you can't win with that "style" And to say that the Suns will pretty much win the title is wrong. What happens if the refs play a toll like last year in the finals? Spurs are always solid....You have to throw the Heat in there cause their defending champs...Pistons are still at the tops of the league....I wouldn't count out the others either....CLE, CHI, HOU, UTA, DEN, and LAL. To me...it's as wide open as any year.

Team play and good coaching or good psychologist...

Look at past teams: Bulls, Spurs, Celtics, Lakers, Pistons...even Heat this past year w/ team play, good role players and for them a HOT go to guy...

Good sound defense w/ great help defense and a bench that can keep a lead, or not fall further behind...the half court offense is talked about a lot and the game does change for playoffs and favors teams that can play that style best but it does require all the above mentioned...

Funny griffey you mentioned the Suns style...not saying that isn't true today, but damn I remember the Celtics and Lakers having many games that were 120's PLUS & higher EACH...Laker Show...so why not Suns?? When a team really needs a STOP can they do it?

Just some random thoughts from a fan and former player and more of a rec player now but also from someone who coaches or tries to...

Could be...those teams were before I really got into sports and statistics. And I'm too lazy to look it up.

I agree with Fast Eddie, it's all about chemistry and playing well together. Of course athletic ability plays it's part, but playing together as a team is most important

I played and coached and it's all about the CHEMISTRY!!!!! And of course in the NBA the PLAYERS, and in college the COACH and the players.

I think the most important thing is defense because no matter how bad you shoot on a given night, if you play solid D, you will most likely have a chance at the end.

Frank this does not have an easy answer....

I don't know SHIT about the NBA, but IMO fundamentals and discipline wins games on the college level and below. These aspects I believe are a direct correlation to coaching.
                  Remember the three R's:
Respect for self; Respect for others; and Responsibility for all your actions.

You don't think coaching makes a difference in the NBA?

Team chemistry, unselfishness, and good team defense.

Also and the most important in my opinion is that there cannot be to many scorers / ballhogs / shooters. Look at the top teams in the past-

                      1) Bulls - jordan, pippen and a bunch of overachieving bench players

                      2) S.A. - Duncun as the main guy and a few above average player

                      3) lakers of the 90's UNSELFISH Magic, kareem, worthy and bench guys like rambis and macadoo

                      4) Detroit of the 90's Aguirre , and a 10 DEEEEP bench

It seems when teams have too many good players the dont perform well. Only one ball and 5 superstarts that want to shoot will ruin a team

What is the one thing these teams had in common (ok, I'm not sure about the Lakers of the 902)...they all played great D...Jordan was the defensive player of the year numerous times...SA played unreal D when they won it...Detroit was known for their D, not only in the 90s, but also when they won it in this decade

Chemistry and depth can be combined into "matchups" in which each team has distinct advantages at specific positions.

It is how they address those "mismatches" that will go a long way in deciding the outcome of the game.

Coaching is the most critical factor due to important adjustments of these matchups that must be made to gain the upper hand throughout the game or series.
"The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice.

I was gonna say all that but was too lazy type

The 80's Lakers had a guy named Micheal Cooper who was the best defensive player in the league.

I've played on a city league level for many years. I think teams that have chemistry seem to do well. The way to achieve chemistry is to keep a team intact. It's why the Bulls won so many championships in a row. It was basically the same team year after year.

I've often said I'd rather see one college or pro team play in the olympics rather than an assembled group of all stars 3 weeks before it starts. The foreign teams are made up of guys who have played together for many years.

When you're on the court and you know the tendencies of your teammates your chances of scoring and defending are much, much better and so is your chances of winning....
