U cant argue with the playoff record...but give me a break, the main mistake i think he made was wasting 2nd half timeouts. His players dropped the ball literally...fumbles, interceptions, stupid penalties, Vincent not dragging his foot in the end zone...plenty of things out of his control, if he doesnt waste his timeouts I think that game goes into overtime and then who knows he could have blown it then.
the thing is the dumb penalites and fumbles come down to discipline and being prepared for certain situations. that preparation comes from coaching.
You cannot coach BRAINLESS personal fouls as they are caused from PERSONAL DECISION!!!! (more specifically the pers. foul to give NE that 1st down)
yes you can. teams are either disciplined and prepared for situations, or they are not. you saw it yesterday and that was the difference in the game. one team had all the personal fouls, and they lost. one team also had all the mental errors, and they lost.
plain and simple. game awareness, discipline, and preparation start with the coach.
I think it would be ridiculous to fire a coach after a 14-2 season. On the other hand, the Marlins fired Joe Girardi after he was named manager of the year.
While I don't think Schottenheimer should be fired, he is a terrible playoff coach and he made TWO decisions that probably cost his team the game. Both were because of his inability to anticipate.
1) His idiotic challenge cost him a yimeout.
2) He took a second timeout needlessly.
This left SD with no timeouts after New England's score. This was decisive. After Rivers completed his first pass on SD's last drive, 20 seconds were wasted at the line of scrimmage. If there was an extra timeout, they might have gotten three additional plays. Another ten yards on the drive and the kicker probably makes the field goal. Idiotic coaching and game management.
Still, the guy went 14-2.
How can he be canned when Jack Del Rio still has a job?

As I've said before- he had 2 decisons in the game, and he was 0 for 2. Not kicking a FG in the 1Q, and the stupid challenge. If a coach can't get over the hump, they need to find someone who can.
The Patriots made the plays when they had to, but were very fortunate to even be put in the position to make them.

You are much more forgiving than I am. Yes his players deserve a lot of the blame but the players are an extension of the coach. And the personal foul penalties fall under his watch. Penalties are a lack of discipline and that is the coaches job. Secondly, he blew it using a TO to review the fumble in the 2H. Having that To at the end of the game could have gotten them in better position to win the game. Thirdly, LDT was shredding them on the ground and Rivers was not good yesterday...so why does LDT not have 30-35 carries. If he did, they would be gameplanning for Indy.
For someone to say he was not outcoached is comical...and I am far from a Pats fan and was rooting for SD.
14-2 means diddly shit when you go 1 and done when it counts. He is responsible for the composure of his team and for making the fateful decisions on the FG's, timeouts, etc.
What do you do? Give him another year extension, see him go 16-0 and then lose yet again in the postseason? You have to clear him out unless you are ok with this shit every year.

What's the excuse for LDT only carrying the ball 23 times when he was shredding the Pats defense? Isn't that the HC's decision? He should have had 30 carries minimum. They had the lead most of the game, Rivers was not good...no excuse except for bad coaching.
That fumble after the INT was the "game-changing" moment and if SD fires this guy they are RETARDED!!!
The guy lead his team to a 14-2 season and a turnover and personal foul won this game, not bad coaching!!!
very unlucky playoff coach he is but i like what chado says, did he fumble that intercept?,did he make that stupid penalty?, ps-i lost my goy on san diego yesterday but i sure don't blame the coach, there were lots of crucial blunders in that game including some dropped passes that could have been game-changing !! 2nd ps-and for the record i have new england at 9 to 1 to win it all but something tells me,they never get out of indy, just a gut feeling, very strange playoffs !!

You cannot have it both ways. If he had run the ball "too much", you would accuse him of playing Marty Ball.
The game was two good teams and could've gone either way. I thought the mix of the pass and run was fair on the Charger's part; like most games, it came down to mistakes, penalties, and turnovers. Yes, the coach has some say in having the team focussed; but the Pats had some errors as well. If the int is not fumbled, the Chargers run Lt and run out the clock resulting in another potential score as well.

I respect your opinion but , imo, I think you are wayyyy off base...accuse him of Marty ball by giving it to the best player in the NFL?!?!?!?! Are you serious? 9 touches in the 2H and that is a fair mix? You've got to be kidding me! If you are going to lose, go down giving the ball to arguably the best player on the planet. Misuse of timeouts and he shouldn't get lambasted? Going for it on 4th and 11 and not trying a 47 yd field goal is not worthy of criticism? And the challenge on the fumble was comical.
Coughlin drives me crazy because he is supposed to be a disciplinarian and his team was the most undisciplined team in the NFL...make that the 2bd most as SD surely outdid them this weekend and that has A LOT to do with coaching.

Having the lead that they had, they had the best player on the planet to succeed in marty ball....run the ball and the clock and keep Brady off the field....
And somehow....it only a way that Marty can do...he fucked that up.
I don't know if it warrents him losing his job....but the leash is definetely shorter.
