    Detroit at Phoenix

      Six-Pack for Thursday

-- Chargers are -4.5 points over New England; Rivers is on Pro Bowl team over Brady, Belichick is the anti-Marty for winning big games, and the Patriots are underdog. I really hope I'm wrong about this game.

-- Likewise, the Saints (one playoff win ever) are favored to beat an Eagle team that doesn't lose until the NFC title game or the Super Bowl. I still think Saints will be NFC champs, but Reid makes me nervous about this game.

-- Eagles were 3-point favorite when teams met in Week 6 at Superdome, with Saints kicking walk-off FG. Now they are 5-point underdog? Value points to Eagles, emotion to the home team.

-- You really want to lay nine points with Rex Grossman?

-- Why does the NFL use a different ball for kicks?

-- What are the odds of me getting through the weekend without hearing the words "Terrell" and "Owens" in same sentence? Sadly, I don't think there's a chance.

Thursday's List of 13: Random thoughts on the sports world

        13) There is 6-5 guard at Jackson State named Trey Johnson who is a scoring machine; he has already put up 49 vs UTEP, 36 vs Alabama, 33 vs Ga Tech, 32 vs Memphis, 27 vs Illinois. Thats a big-time scorer.

        12) Last year, I truly enjoyed listening to Pete Gillen doing the color on college hoop games on CSTV, Wednesday was first time I heard him this season. Most underrated guy on TV; I am shocked ESPN missed out on hiring Gillen.

        11) East Carolina has ten new guys on its hoop team, almost like an expansion team. Hard to be good that way. Pirates are another team that wears black road uniforms, when school's main color is purple (my alma mater does this too- UAlbany). Guess kids don't like purple.

        10) While I'm here, someone explain to me how East Carolina is in the same league as Tulsa, SMU and Rice? Someone in the Conference USA league office needs to buy a map.

        9) Tulsa is using the Bill Snyder-scheduling model to raise its team's confidence, playing easy teams to build up win total, and confidence, heading into league play. You'll know they're getting better when they upgrade the non-league schedule.

        8) I'm curious to see what Tom Coughlin will do to help career of Eli Manning that he hasn't already tried, other than hiring better offensive assistants who are teachers first.

        7) Not sure why Wyoming doesn't sell out all its hoop games What else is there to do in Laramie on a Wednesday?

        6) When UNLV and Wyoming recruit the same kid, who you think has the edge? 24-hour fun against, well, I'm not sure.

        5) NC State assistant hoop coach Monte Towe was not only PG on Wolfpack's national championship hoop team in '74, he was a second baseman on the ACC champ baseball team.

        4) Dante Bichette got three votes for the Hall of Fame; really, he did. His best stats were put up in Denver, and the freakin' guy gets three votes for the Hall of Fame. Amazing.

        3) I think the ballots for Hall of Fame should be made public, so we can see who the nitwits are who vote for Bichette and who isn't voting for obvious choices like Ripken and Gwynn.

        2) Kevin Kruger played only two minutes in UNLV's OT loss at Wyoming last night, due to deep thigh bruise.

        1) Enough about Greg Oden's age; the guy turns 19 later this month. Its like when a kid in Little League hits a lot of homers and all the bitchy parents complain because he isn't on their kid's team. Sometimes I can't stand people.
