  • What I Would Love to See Some Day

In watching the great finish to tonight's game(I am talking about it only from a purist point of view and not gambling), I got to thinking about a scenario that will probably never happen, but would like to knwo what would happen if it did.
    Ok-heres the scenario:
Lets say a college game goes into overtime and Team A is favored by 6 1/2 points.
Lets say Team A scores a touchdown first and then adds the extra point putting them up by 7.
Now lets say Team B doesn't fare as well and they find themselves 4th and 20.
So you say "No big deal, they try to make the 10 yards."
Hold on-the coach of team B decides to go for a field goal(obviously to beat the pointspread but not trying to tie the game).
My questions are 1) would officials let him try it? 2)Assuming they did, and the kicker made the kick, and thus beating the spread, what would the NCAA do?
I suppose the coach could always offer an excuse stating that "we thought we would have a better chance of trying a field goal, hoping it would be blocked or some other freak accident would occur allowing us to recover the ball in endzone or that ball would bounce back to one of all players allowing him to score than it would be to try a 20 yard pass or running play."
I know above scenario is bizarre, but again what do you think would happen if the coach attempted to do this and the ramifications if he actually did it?

    good question.

something i've always thought about-- i wonder if sportsbooks would offer OT 'insurance' on college football. say you had an under only to see a game go 3 OTs and kill your total. or say you had a team +6.5 only to see them lose by 7 in OT. I'm sure some people would like to protect such bets with the way college OT is.

I get the feeling that the question was too far fetched to merit a response.
I would love to see it happen some day though and to see if coach kept his job and/or if NCAA did anything afterwards.

A coach would be under heavy scrutiny. Further proof that games are not fixed by coaches.

I just don't think it would ever happen. Coaches get paid to WIN games, not cover the spread.

forget worrying about what would happen in this case----cause it's not gonna happen.........

Too obvious, and the players might just have something to say about it.....Like not doing it....kapt

            But to answer your question........

The refrees have no control whatsover on play selection, thus their hands are tied.....that is the answer to a MOOT question....kapt

Remember the "humanitarian bowl" on the smurfturf in 2003 I think where Frenso State could have taken a knee to kill the clock after they took over on downs but instead pounded the ball in with a couple of seconds left to cover the spread? People got pretty riled up about that one, but I was happy $$$$$.

I remember that game very well, but was on the losing end of it.

I remember because it was about the only bowl game I won on that year
