NFL's Cardinals Fire Coach Dennis Green After 3rd Losing Season
By Larry DiTore
Jan. 1 (Bloomberg) -- The Arizona Cardinals fired coach Dennis Green one day after the team completed its third straight losing season.
The team announced the dismissal on its Web site, without providing additional information.
Green, who had one year remaining on a four-year contract he signed in 2004, had a 16-32 record in three seasons with the Cardinals and was unable to break the team's postseason drought. Arizona was 5-11 this season and hasn't reached the playoffs since the 1998 campaign.
Green, 57, was unable to win as the Cardinals moved into a new $445 million stadium this season. The team signed running back Edgerrin James before the season, had two-time Most Valuable Player Kurt Warner at quarterback and Pro Bowl receivers in Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald.
Arizona opened the season with a win against San Francisco, then lost eight straight games. During the streak, Fitzgerald missed time with an injury, the team fired its offensive coordinator and Warner was replaced by rookie Matt Leinart.
The Cardinals closed the season winning four of their last seven games, including a 27-20 defeat yesterday to the San Diego Chargers, who clinched home-field advantage throughout the American Football Conference playoffs with the win.
Green is the first coach fired since the end of the NFL's regular season. There were eight coaching changes last offseason, with seven firings and Dick Vermeil's retirement from the Kansas City Chiefs.
