Middle Tennessee St. vs. Central Michigan

The Motor City Bowl features a pair of lesser-known teams that have both enjoyed strong turnaround seasons. Central Michigan went from being one of the lower-rung teams in the MAC to conference champs in coach Brian Kelly's third season. A big part of that is redshirt freshman QB Dan LeFevour, who threw for 25 TDs against 10 INTs. But success does have its price and Kelly was wooed away by Cincinnati, leaving offensive coordinator Jeff Quinn as the coach for the Chippewas tonight. Middle Tennessee loaded up with some tough out-of-conference games and took its lumps against Louisville, South Carolina and Oklahoma. Those lessons may have helped the Blue Raiders dominate the Sun Belt schedule as they won six straight until losing to Troy in the regular-season finale (21-20). But that loss doesn't look so bad in light of Troy's solid win over Rice in the New Orleans Bowl. Nor did the MAC look so good in the Poinsettia Bowl with TCU's big win over Northern Illinois, which happened to beat Central Michigan (31-10) back on November 17. This game looks to be closer than the Vegas line (Central Michigan by 10) according to Dunkel, which has the Chippewas favored by only 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Middle Tennessee St. (+10).
