            Saturday, December 23

            Washington at Toronto
Washington comes into the contest having won its last three games on the road. The Leafs have come back down to earth after beating the Rangers (9-2) last Saturday and have suffered back-to-back defeats against Florida (7-3) and Chicago (3-1). Overall the Leafs have won just three of 12 since November 25. Toronto's leading scorer, Kyle Wellwood, missed the Chicago game (groin strain) and is questionable today. The Caps look like a good underdog pick in this one according to Dunkel, which has Washington favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Washington (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                    Write-up

                    Papa John's Bowl, Birmingham
East Carolina is in bowl for first time since '01; South Florida got shut out by NC State last year, 14-0, in their first bowl. Big East teams really had great year against spread, covering over 70% out of conference, and South Florida is up-and-coming team in league, with fertile recruiting base all around their campus. This bowl is good chance for them to springboard into 2007.

ECU is 18-5 vs spread under Skip Holtz, 7-0 out of conference; they have four-year starter at QB, but South Florida played in a much better league this season. Bulls have better defense, and they've gotten some guys healthy since their last game.

                    New Mexico Bowl, Albuquerque
Hidden out west was brilliant coaching job done by Dick Tomey at San Jose State; they were 14-33 in four years prior to '06, so Tomey has done wonders, going 8-4 with Spartan club that runs ball well (15th in country). Problem for them is they're playing in Albuquerque vs the host team, not the best situation.

Lobos lost their offensive coordinator Toledo to Tulane, but he is coaching in this game; New Mexico used three different QBs during season, pulled out three close wins late in year to get to minimum 6-6 record and bowl eligibility. Lobos are 0-3 in bowls, but they will have home crowd behind them.

I think if you are looking at a side in this game, now way would I take a 6-6 team giving points, even at home. I'd take San Jose St.

                    Armed Forces Bowl, Fort Worth
Utah got better late in season, winning three games in row, after Thursday night loss to New Mexico, then losing finale to rival BYU on last-second TD pass, where Beck had 12 seconds to find receiver open. Utes were one of only two teams that beat TCU this season, now they're playing on Horned Frogs' field.

Tulsa lost three of last four games after 7-1 start, including win vs UTEP on ESPN; so they're probably disappointed to be here but should have crowd advantage, since they're lost closer than Utes, who are making longest trip of season.

Utah is 4-0 in bowls this decade, winning 10-6/17-0/35-7/38-10, and they were underdog in two of those games. They played a lot better down stretch than Tulsa did; they're right side here.

                            Saturday's List of 13:

If I ran the NBA for a day........

                            13) Middle Tennessee defensive coordinator Manny Diaz is an interesting story; not only is his dad the mayor of Miami, he was a production assistant at ESPN in the mid-90's, when he asked Bill Parcells (working at ESPN at the time) to get him a job in coaching.

                            12) Parcells hooked him up with Mickey Andrews at Florida State, and when Chuck Amato left Tallahassee for NC State, he took Diaz with him. Now he's the defensive coordinator for a bowl team. Its fun to hear good stories like this.

                            11) Another good story is Caron Butler, who was arrested 15 times before he was 15 years old, but has gotten his life back on the right path, and now he's a darned good player, and a good person

                            10) Right now, Gilbert Arenas is the best player in the NBA; dropping 54 pts on the Suns Friday night, and is unstoppable right now. He is upset over being left off the national team last summer, and is taking it out on the rest of the league.

                            9) Not only did Iona make the NCAAs last season, they led LSU at the half in their first round game. Gaels might not win a game this season; they lost at home to New Hampshire on Friday, and UNH is just 2-8.

                            8) Record that will never be broken: Lakers' 33-game winning streak. Second highest NBA streak is only 20 in a row.

                            7) Knicks are 3-0 since the brawl, bad news for Knick fans; if this winning continues, they might not fire Isiah Thomas.

                            6) All young hoopers should watch David Lee of the Knicks; he's a good player because he busts his butt on every play; he is averaging around 10 rebounds a game.

                            5) If the Duke lacrosse players are acquitted of all charges in their case, can the coach get his job back? Why should he be the only one to pay a price for all this?

                            4) The NHL is considering realigning from six divisions down to four, to reduce travel expenses. Give them credit; they are trying lot of things to help their sport.

                            3) The Sixers' 12-game losing streak and Suns' 15-game win streak ended on same night. Must have been a full moon.

                            2) I am seriously considering getting the NBA package back on my satellite dish, just so I can watch the Suns. It is a little pricey, and I watch so much college ball it might not be a wise buy, but it is worth every penny just to watch Phoenix play.

                            1) All basketball coaches should be required to watch Suns and Wizards games; it is the way basketball should be played fun for the players, fans. Trust your players to make plays.
