UConn is 8-0 vs a really soft schedule; they've only played in three lined games (3-0 as favorite). Big East home favorites are 33-24 against the spread. St Mary's is 4-4, but 0-3 on road, with losses at USC (69-63), CalPoly (72-59) and Nevada (76-58). WCC road dogs are 14-17.

Home side won the last two Cleveland State-Central Michigan games, with Vikings losing last visit here, 79-70. Central lost last three games by 1,16,18 points; they're 1-2 vs spread as favorite this season. Vikings are 5-3 as an underdog this season.

Troy lost 71-68 at Florida Int'l LY (+2.5); Panthers are 1-4 away from home, with losses by 21,29,26,16 pts, winning only at new D-I team Kennesaw State. Trojans are 5-6, losing opener in Sun Belt 91-87 at Fla Atlantic (-4). Sun Belt home favorites are 4-1.

Road team won last two Wake Forest-Va Tech games, as Tech won 76-70 at Wake LY, after losing 83-63 at home a year before. Hokies are 3-3 as favorite this season. Wake lost three games in row, allowing 85,87,87 points.

Arizona lost 69-65 at Houston LY (-4), when Olson benched a starter; Wildcats recruit Houston a lot; assistant coach Pastner is from there. Houston allowed 80+ points in four of five games, and lost last two road games, 81-78/102-84.

San Jose won 69-56 at Long Beach LY (+4), but Spartans lost seven of eight games this season, splitting pair at home. Only team they beat is Cal Poly. 49ers won last three games by 4,5,21 points. WAC home dogs are 4-2 against the spread.

Southern Illinois is 7-1, with wins vs Saint Louis, Va Tech and at Western Kentucky, now Salukis visit Indiana; Hoosiers off to 5-3 start under Sampson, but they scored 73+ points in the wins, 55-51-54 in losses. Salukis are allowing 56.6 ppg vs D-I teams.

      St. Mary's (CA) at Connecticut
Jim Calhoun has a team with eight freshmen and five sophomores so it makes sense that he has brought them along slowly with a schedule that's loaded up with lower-rated teams. Thus far the young Huskies have feasted on teams such as Central Arkansas, Texas Southern and Albany and come into today's contest having won their last four by an average margin of 38.25 points. St. Mary's does mark a slight improvement although the Gaels did lose to Nevada by 18 (76-58) their last time out and fell to Seton Hall (93-82) when they traveled east on the 2nd. UConn looks like a good pick to cover the Vegas line (-15 1/2) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Huskies favored by 25. Dunkel Pick: Connecticut (-15 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

        Washington at LA Lakers
The Wizards have struggled on the road thus far (2-8), but they look to be hitting their current road trip with more confidence after winning seven of their last nine, including their first two road wins (vs. New York and Philadelphia). The Lakers are adjusting to life without Lamar Odom (sprained knee) and have split the two games since he was sidelined. A hot Washington team looks like a good pick to take advantage of the Vegas line (+4 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has the game even. Dunkel Pick: Washington (+4 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

          New Jersey at NY Rangers
New Jersey is trying to avoid losing four straight in regulation for the first time since the 2000 season. The Devils may have a good opportunity today against a Ranger team that was handed its worst loss of the season (9-2) yesterday against Toronto. The defense was shaky all day as the Rangers were outshot 32-13 and goalie Henrik Lundqvist gave up a career-high eight goals in only two periods. Rebounding from that type of loss could be tough even against a struggling Devils squad. New Jersey looks like a good underdog pick in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Devils favored straight up by 1/2 a goal. Dunkel Pick: New Jersey (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                  Six-Pack for Sunday

Damn shame more people couldn't have seen Cowboys-Falcons game; one of best games I've seen in while.

If nothing else, check out the hit on the Dallas kick return guy after the Falcons tied game 14-all. Best hit ever on kick returner, but the guy bounced right up and wasn't injured.

Michael Vick tweaked a leg muscle with Falcons down in last 2:00; he took himself out of game. Marshall Faulk and Deion Sanders both criticized him for leaving game.

Atlanta is 7-7 and has issues after Huskiegate Friday, but if Falcons beat Carolina, Philly in last two games, they'll be in the playoffs. If not, they may need a new head coach.

Halftime score: Ohio State 42, Cincinnati 14. In hoops.

Knicks-Nuggets brawl saw all ten guys on court ejected; Carmelo Anthony will be suspended; as for the five Knicks, well who really cares if their guys get suspended?

                    Sunday's List of 13:

                    Random weekend thoughts..........

                    13) People openly scoffed at JD Drew when he walked away from three years at $11M a year from the Dodgers. Then he landed a five-year deal for $14M a season. I don't know one person who likes this guy as a player. Not one!!!

I know people who thought Doug Sisk was a good reliever for the Mets, but no one who likes Drew as a player.

                    12) Why don't we just elect scumweasel Boras President of the United States, then he can talk Saudi Arabia into giving us their oil, plus throwing in a couple of camels, in exchange for Tiger Woods designing a couple of golf courses outside of Bahrain. Just a thought.

                    11) In addition to giving Drew $70M, the Red Sox gave Julio Lugo $9 a year, $3M more a season than Jose Reyes gets. Lugo isn't half the player Reyes is.

Do Red Sox have scouts, or even DirecTV? Or the Internet, so they can read the LA papers and see that Lugo wasn't starting at the end of the season?

                    10) How did Allen Iverson last two years playing for John Thompson? Maybe whomever trades for Iverson needs to recruit Thompson to run its franchise.

                    9) There are hundreds of high school and college basketball coaches all over America whose teams play nothing but man-to-man defense, because that's how Bob Knight coaches. But if Knight coached in the NBA, his man-to-man defense would be called a zone. No help side defenders allowed in the lane for more than three seconds.

                    8) Syracuse's basketball team won't leave the state of New York until after New Year's, unless they took wrong tunnel when they were down in NYC. Shouldn't there be a rule that every team should have to leave their state once a month?

                    7) I mean, couldn't Boeheim schedule the team with the 336th RPI on the road? No way he loses to them, but at least it's an away game. How does it help his team to always be home?

                    6) Nick Saban is praised as a brilliant football coach, but he chose Daunte Culpepper over Drew Brees, and wound up with Joey Harrington as his QB.

Doesn't this automatically disqualify him from being brilliant?

                    5) The only NFL team that doesn't sell out all its home games has an owner and GM who are both in their late-70's; unless they get a new stadium, Buffalo Bills are a team headed out of town, to LA, San Antonio or Canada.

                    4) I've watched two high school basketball games in the last week; as a result, I've decided that 75% of time at these teams' practices should be devoted to development of skills. Don't teach them plays, teach them how to play.

                    3) If you like the NBA at all, pick up Jack McCallum's book, Seven Seconds or Less. It gives us hope that there is still some normalcy left in pro basketball. Not a lot, but some.

                    2) I have friends who play golf every time they have a day off (when the weather permits). What does Eldrick Woods do on his days off?

                    1) Kiki Vandeweghe works for ESPN, while Isiah Thomas is in charge of an NBA franchise; whats wrong with this picture?
