Knowing nothing about either team or any team that plays in 1AA is not a situation to invest in, BUT...this is still an income earning oppertunity and a challenge to handicap so I will make the attempt.
UMASS +3 over App st.
First and foremost I think the line has a little bit of emotion inflating it. Everyone got to see the prime time match up last week with the #1 ranked 1AA team win and win easily and reward their backers who layed the 7 (never in doubt).
UMASS played in Montana at 4:oo est. and not televised nationally.
Looking into APP's impressive win vs. Youngstown : Youngstown has NO DEF...They are ranked #83 in total D, #89 Rush D, #47 Pass D. They do have the #9 Rush o, but are ranked #87 in Pass offense so once the Mountaneers got the lead Youngy had no chance.
App st does have some impressive rankings:
#15 Total D
#15 Pass D
#10 Rush D
#4 Rush O
Surprisingly #67 in Pass off.
The Minutemen also show some impressive rankings and seem to match up pretty well (evenly).
#14 Total D
#19 Pass D
#9 Rush D
#26 Rush O
#32 Pass O
UMASS has also played the tougher schedule as far as the playoffs are concerned, beating the 9th ranked team (actually twice as they are a conf foe) and the #2 ranked team away. App beat the 13, 18 and 5 all at home.
Neither team has really been "challenged" so to speak this year. App st has led or tied going into the half in ALL their games but 2, against Georgia Southern and NC State (1A).
UMass has led or been tied in all regular season games INCLUDING @ Navy where the lost by 1 (Very Impressive to me). In the last 2 Mass was down by 3 and came back to win.
App st is going for back 2 back Championships a feat that has only happened I believe 2 other times (showing how difficult it is in 1AA.
This may be a prelude to the BCS National Championship where it is being said that UMass won't be able to handle the speed App has and Umass is a grind it out team who wants the lead by the 4th quarter so they can turn the game over to their run O.
App State's Achilles heal TURNOVERS will rear it's ugly head against a tough defense. App st has turned the ball over 29 times in the reg season while UMass has 18.
I'm looking at this being a closely played game where mistakes will be the difference.
Now let's throw this pup in the water and see if it swims.
(it's a figure of speach BC you P.E.T.A. lovin', tree huggin' Democrat)
Good Luck to All on whatever you play....
Sorry so wordy
