Lets put it this way-if I had my choice between having Matsuzaka or all of the departed players who have left the Red Sox since 2004-Damon, Lowe, Loretta, Gonzalez,Nixon, Cabrera, Martinez, etc., I would take the departed players in a hearbeat.
Even if I had the kind of money the Sox FO does, I sure as heck wouldn't bet the kind of money they are that this will lead Sox to the promised land.
He may be great in Japan, but we are talking playing in Boston, for the Red Sox, the Green Monster, etc.;with the kind of money he is being paid, the fans will be real tough on him if he doesn't live up to expectations.

ESPNews reports the Boston Red Sox agreed with SP Daisuke Matsuzaka on a six-year, $52 million deal. The team will pay $51.1 million to the Seibu Lions for negotiating rights on top of the contract.

You could feed an awful lot of poor people in the world with just a fraction of that amount of money.
