          Six-Pack for Tuesday

-- Chargers swept Denver this year for first time since 1982.

-- Last two seasons, home teams are 10-10 in NFL playoffs; over last 16 years, in that second round, home sides have won 51 of 64 games, so the Wild Card and conference title rounds are where the home team is in a soft spot.

In his two years as Miami coach, Nick Saban is 5-11 in the first half of season, 10-3 from Game 9 on......

Maurice Jones-Drew had 166 rushing yards and a 93-yard kick return for TD vs Colts, very Gale Sayers-like.

NFL offices keep a 30-minute interview on file with each coordinator in NFL, so when teams look for head coaches they have a quick reference to see what guys are about. All the coaches are asked the same questions in the interview.

I am going to sit on my couch next April and watch the NFL Draft, and I hope to see the Rams draft nothing but linemen, on both sides of the ball. They need an infusion of young blood, much like the Saints got this season.

Tuesday's List of 13: Our opinions on NFL coaches......

We've broken down the 32 NFL head coaches into seven categories; within each group, they'll be listed alphabetically. Feel free to disagree………

            Top of the Heap
Belichick, Patriots-- Won three Super Bowls, also assisted on two other championship teams. If he has a personality, he hides it better than he coaches.

Cowher, Steelers-- When I envision a football coach, I think of someone like Cowher. He has lasted very long time in one place, because he's lucky enough to work for a stable organization, but he's also a very good coach.

Holmgren, Seahawks- Gong to Super Bowl with Hasselbeck more impressive than winning it with Favre, but how good was either franchise before he got there? Also has an outstanding coaching tree.

Parcells, Cowboys-Media is obsessed with him, its been 16 years since his last championship, but he had won everywhere he's gone, even if he doesn't stay in one place very long. I'd love to know what he really thinks of #81.

They won the Super Bowl, but……..
Billick, Ravens-So-called QB guru goes thru signal callers like JLo goes through boyfriends; he won title with superior defense. He is winning again this year, though, so could move up to top of heap with big postseason.

Gruden, Bucs-The '06 Bucs look more like the '76 Bucs than the Super Bowl Bucs, and that lies on Gruden's head, but he did win title with Tony Dungy's players. Why did he get rid of Brad Johnson so quickly?

Mike Shanahan- Won two Super Bowls with Elway, but hasn't done much since, other than change RBs every year and sabotage Jake Plummer's career so he could trade up to draft a QB from Vanderbilt. Nicely done.

            Overrated
Gibbs, Redskins-Won three Super Bowls, but two of three were in strike-shortened seasons, '82 and '87; he had Bobby Beathard as his personnel guy, who was #1 in his profession at that time. Even when he won, he always changed QBs. His teams now are clueless collections of underachievers.

Saban, Dolphins- In two seasons in Miami, his record in Games 1-8 of both seasons is combined 5-11; not very good, downright Les Steckel-like. His teams played well in second half of both seasons (10-3), the media loves him, so he gets a pass, but how is he any better than Pete Carroll?

In between overrated and ready to ascend......
Dungy, Colts- This generation's Chuck Knox, but Knox is in a Super Bowl or two with Peyton Manning. Dungy's teams always win, and they, to this point, have always folded in January. He had Rams by throat in '00 NFC title game, but let them get away, or else he'd still be in Tampa. As soon as he left Tampa, Gruden won a title with his players......

            Next Level, Ready to Ascend
Del Rio, Jaguars-His teams always play hard, and switch to Garrard has worked out well, mainly because Garrard is better than Leftwich, so I guess he's lucky there, but he just seems like a sharp guy.

Fisher, Titans-I think he's the second-best coach in NFL, but until he wins a title, tough to put him amongst elite, which doesn't seem fair. Job he has done with Titans this season is nothing short of remarkable. He got lucky Houston choked on #1 draft pick.

Fox, Panthers-Not getting much out of his QB this season, but he is sharp, his teams defend well. There are people in Giant organization who wanted Fassel fired earlier in New York, so they could put Fox in charge, but when Giants won NFC in 2000, that didn't happen.

Lewis, Bengals-Restored respect in Queen City; now he has to watch how many bad citizens he employs, or else Al Davis will try to hire him to coach the Raiders. Funny how Lewis is defensive guy, but Bengals have great offense…..

Reid, Eagles- Unless McNabb can be healthier, Eagles are on decline, but Reid is sharp guy who works in one of NFL's tougher outposts on coaches. If he can make playoffs with Jeff Garcia at QB, that would be some wizardry.

Schottenheimer, Chargers-197 regular season wins, plenty of great soundbites on NFL Films, and an albatross: career playoff record is 5-12. If his playoff record is 8-12 in two months, he moves to top of heap.

Smith, Bears- How he handles his QB situation this month and next are huge; his teams play great defense, going back to St Louis, but he won't win title until he comes up with a QB who won't screw things up.

            High potential
Mora Jr, Falcons-Michael Vick will make or break his tenure in Atlanta; shows his emotions more than most coaches, also has an ex-coach/father in the media, which complicates matters. Would be good if he drafted receivers who can catch a thrown football.

Nolan, 49ers-Hired Norv Turner, which improved QB play, which made 49ers lot more competitive in his second season. Give kudos to younger coaches who hire former head coaches as assistants; it shows security.

Payton, Saints-One of best coaching jobs in recent memory has Payton off the incomplete list, but one year isn't enough to get him anywhere else but here. What an offense he has built in short time, though.

            Incomplete
Childress, Vikings-Offensive guy who built great defense; how quickly will he turn to Tarvaris Jackson to save his offense? -- Kubiak, Texans-Whole Young/Bush draft fiasco may haunt Houston for years, and that's being an optimist about it. How long do they stick with Carr at QB?

Linehan, Rams- Inherited a mess, needs linemen on both sides of ball. Also needs work on game management; he lost the Seattle game by not kicking FGs when he had lead. Has gotten offense balanced, very good. Overall, I like him, but they desperately need better line play on both sides.

Mangini, Jets- Don't think they like Pennington that much, but he's played well, so what do they do with him? Has had very good first season, but still may not make playoffs. Why does the Jets' GM have his own TV show?

Marinelli, Lions-Has misfortune of working for Matt Millen, which may explain why he always wears black. Hired Mike Martz as offensive guru, which explains Lions' turnover ratio. 2-11 record has set the bar low, for sure.

McCarthy, Packers-Hired to oversee the end of the Favre era, but trainee Rodgers broke his foot in first game action. Team has gotten better, but they still have long way to go.

            Thanks, but no thanks
Disclaimer: All of these guys are good coaches, or else they never would have gotten to this level of their profession, but for purposes of this list, these are guys I would never hire to be a head coach, and would never want them coaching my favorite team, or any team I invested in (for amusement).

Coughlin, Giants- Life is tough enough without bunch of nitpicking rules; in end, it just complicates things, and turns players against you. Would be better off as a college coach.

Crennel, Browns-He really belongs in incomplete section, but Browns have been so depressing, I put him here. How can you go into season with Frye-Dorsey-Anderson as your quarterbacks? How? Plus, they made him fire his offensive coordinator during season- this may be case of horrible organization, not horrible coach.

Edwards, Chiefs- His record is pretty good, I love listening to him talk, but no way would I want to care about whether his team won; his game management isn't good, and the way he skipped town on the Jets was a red flag (albeit a smart move). He is the best former player of current head coaches.

Green, Cardinals-Loves to blame others, but how about getting some linemen who can block? Had good situation with new stadium in Arizona, is still on way out, but no way is it his fault. Just ask him. .

Jauron, Bills-Would Marv Levy have hired him if he didn't go to an Ivy League school? Member of Holmgren coaching tree; he has to endure JP Losman as his QB, and Bills are slowly getting better, but Bears have been much better since he left.

Shell, Raiders- Al Davis hires too many former players as coaches; he needs more professional coaches who have come up through ranks and paid their dues. Oh yeah, he also needs to sign QB's who can play (not Collins/Brooks). This organization has gone in tank bigtime.

Kids probably don't realize that at one time, the Raiders were cool, but at that time, Art Shell was a great player, not the head coach.
