Yankee Doodle Andy! Pettitte back in Bronx
By BILL MADDEN
After three seasons in Houston, Andy Pettitte and the Yankees will be reunited, the Daily News has learned, rekindling hopes that he will return the Yankees to the magic of their dynasty years.
The 34-year-old lefthander has signed a one-year $16 million contract - with a player option for a second-year at $16 million - to rejoin the team he played for from 1995-2003.
Pettitte, who spent the last three years with his hometown Astros, had hoped to remain with that team after announcing on Wednesday that he was planning to continue his career after first hinting that he would retire.
However, Astros owner Drayton McLane was adamant about not paying Pettitte more than $12 million on a one-year deal, and Thursday the team nearly completed a trade for White Sox righthander Jon Garland as a replacement.
The Astros are still working on completing the Garland deal and as a result Pettitte's agents — Randy and Alan Hendricks — called the Yankees this morning and began negotiations to return the popular pitcher from the Yankees 1996-2000 glory years to New York.
Pettitte was 14-13 with a 4.20 ERA in 35 starts for the Astros last season. His decision to leave the Yankees in 2003 also caused New York teammate Roger Clemens to put off retirement and sign with the Astros.
Pettitte helped the Yankees win four World Series titles.
