Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......................
13) Navy-Boston College bowl game features two coaches NC State targeted to replace Chuck Amato. O'Brien got hired by Wolfpack, so he won't get to coach against his alma mater in the bowl.
12) It is unusual when coach leaves for another job in same league; only other football one that comes to mind was when Bruce Snyder bolted Cal for Arizona State. It happened in hoops in the Ivy League this year, with Miller leaving Brown for Penn.
11) Why did Gil Meche sign with the Royals? He got $55M for five years, but hard to believe Bronx wouldn't come close to that figure, giving him chance to pitch in October. Meche is from Lafayette, LA, same area as Ron Guidry, the pitching coach foir Bronx, so hard to figure why he went with the Royals, although we're glad he did.
10) Baseball-reference.com, one of our favorite websites, now has every major league boxscore from 1957-2006; an amazing reference tool.
9) UCLA C Lorenzo Mata is shooting 23.3% from foul line; I swear, you could take Paris Hilton out of a club at 4am, take her to a playground in a limo, and within 45 minutes, she will make one out of four foul shots. Maybe its just me, but a guy with NBA aspirations should do better than 23.3% from the charity stripe.
8) As I type this, the #1-2 teams in America in the RPI are Butler, Wichita State.
7) The top six conferences in America, according to RPI, are ACC-Pac-10-Missouri Valley-SEC-Big 11-Big East. That's the RPI talking, not me.
6) Of local interest to the Albany area is surprising stat that shows America East the #25-ranked conference, while Metro Atlantic is 27th, very low for them. It could be that Marist will have a cakewalk to conference title.
5) Defensive field goal %age is a strong tell of strength; right now, while it is still a little early, top three in this important category are: USC-Texas A&M-UConn.
4) The five teams that are getting highest percentage of their points on 3-pointers are: VMI-Bradley-Wofford-Eastern Kentucky-St Peter's. This isn't a good list to be on.
3) One of Vanderbilt's punters was arrested for assault after a domestic dispute, where he allegedly threatened peacemaker with a knife. Only at Vanderbilt could the most violent guy on the team be a punter.
2) Nets scored 157 points Thursday. They lost. Seriously.
1) Phoenix took 117 shots from floor in their double OT win in the Swamp, 27 more from foul line, and committed only 12 turnovers. Cannot over-emphasize the importance of having a great floor general, and Suns have the best.
