    Talks heat up on Gagne
    By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The market for come-backing closer Eric Gagne is heating up, and word is Gagne could be signed by the end of the week.

Smack in the middle of it are the Red Sox. The Sox currently have the best opportunity for Gagne, who would be their closer. The Indians could also be in the same boat, also in need of a closer, but Sox dollars could trump the Indians.

Among those in on Gagne are Texas, Toronto, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Gagne, who had back surgery, has just recently begun to throw. While Gagne was originally going to take part in a workout for some teams, that's been scrapped because of the intense interest in him.

now this move i like, if healthy.

so far the sox acquisitions have definitly overpowered all the yankees..JD Drew is a stud and hes young and yet to break out...julio lugo is a great leadoff hitter, base stealer, and SS.

Lugo had 18 errors last year.... calling him a great shortstop is just wrong... a great leadoff hitter, he hit .277 last year ... my definition of a great leadoff hitter is someone who can at the very least hit .300... he is going from the NL to the AL which has much stronger pitching.... I do not see that as a great signing for them at all.

as far as JD Drew, the guy has knocked in 100 RBIs once!... that was last year... he has not yet produced to the extent everyone thought he would by now... also switch from the NL to the AL might prove costly even though Fenway is more hitter friendly than that thing in LA.

Why take a good thing and try to mess with it... Papelbon was great as a closer... why move him? With Schilling, Clement, Matsuzaka hopefully, there is a decent 1,2,3. Wakefield is not an awful 4. I do not see why you would need to take something that worked and try to mess with it. Try to go out and sign a decent starting pitcher, why move Pap?

lugo will fit in fine...they need a consistent base stealer, and JD will love to hit when hes hitting right behind ortiz believe me JD will be worth the pay

Dude JD will never hit behind Ortiz... Manny is going nowhere... he will hit behind Manny and maybe even Varitek. He will be a bad 5 or a decent 6 hitter at best...

and where is Lugo going to fit in? They have a good leadoff man in Coco Crisp... Lugo should be there to bunt Crips over every single time... the guy has talent but is nowhere near Great or the level a shortstop should be for a World Series contender.

lugo is an AL everyday player......He only played for the dodgers a 1/2 a season and was with the stros years before.....He had 14 hr's last year in tampa after being injured at the beginning of the season....Crisp has proven he is NOT a good leadoff hitter in cleveland nor in boston......Lugo has a good fielding % (last year was his worst) and hits in the 270's -290's.....I think he will be fine.....

Clement will never be a good number 2...he will be lucky to be #5.....you failed to mention beckett as well.....you also forgot about jon lester who was lights out until lymphoma.....Papelbon was a starter prior to helping the team out...In fact he was penciled in to take arroyo's spot in the rotation before they realized foulke could not cut it...

I did forget about Beckett... I knew I was missing someone on that rotation and Lester is no guarantee to play this year... depending on how it works out health wise with him...

Schilling, Beckett, Matsuzaka, Clement, Wakefield.... I do not see anything wrong with this rotation as long as Matsuzaka lives up to the hype and they actually sign him... Clement will get 10-12 wins and Wakefield about the same which is all you can ask from a 4 and 5 starter...

My point is mainly that Papelbon was fine in the pen and he should stay there... Heilman worked out for the Mets that way and there is no need to screw that up either...

Dont fix it if it isnt broke...

If you really want a leadoff man.... take Clement and a prospect and try to pry Carl Crawford away from Tampa Bay. They need pitching and it seems like Clement is not needed anymore. Then try to move Manny somewhere and put Crawford into left field. See how good Drew is when Manny is gone and how much Ortiz's stats go down.

The point being mainly though that Lugo is not a great player... watch this year he will not produce as you think... hell hit around .270 and that will not be good enough for Boston.

thats good.....theyre taking all of the dodgers regulars ---

                          on the disabled list...

how can they give jd drew 70 million over 5 years ....Carpenter is getting less money than that oh, and lugo is anarexic

the sox are just a mess right now

i never said he was great and i do not believe we need him to hit .300....I also heard that he is a great teammate and a hustler.....red sox need some of those....believe me....I do not disagree with you on the pen, but i am only a businessman and generally speaking the baseball people have more knowledge than myself......so i have faith they will do what is right.....ha ha

Manny Ramirez could be traded to the Dodgers or Mariners on Wednesday, according to an ESPN Deportes report.

The report states that the Dodgers are willing to part with Brad Penny and two prospects, while the Mariners have offered both Richie Sexson and Adrian Beltre.
