Roughly a month ago, USC's title hopes took what appeared to be a crippling blow with a loss to lightly regarded Oregon State.

Barry talks BCS
BCS expert Barry Alvarez joins FOX to break down the latest rankings. Hear what he thinks about USC's jump past Michigan to No. 2.
But after handling Oregon, California and Notre Dame in the last three weeks (pretty handily, mind you), the Trojans' so-called rebuilding season is on the verge of ending in a third consecutive trip to the BCS title game.
As expected, USC's 44-24 rout of then-No. 6 Notre Dame vaulted the Trojans past idle Michigan and into the No. 2 slot in the latest BCS standings,
And so it appears all that stands between USC and a date with Ohio State in Glendale, Arizona on Jan. 8 is a win over crosstown rival UCLA on Dec. 2.
Now, while it's true anything can happen in a rivalry game, it's also true that the Trojans have handled the Bruins the last seven times the two teams have met. So USC has to feel pretty good about its chances at getting a shot at the title that eluded it last season.
Michigan, meanwhile, could only watch idly as its .07 lead over USC evaporated in a hail of John David Booty-to-Dwayne Jarrett touchdown passes. The Wolverines now trail the Trojans in all three components that determine the BCS standings -- the Harris poll, the USA Today/ESPN poll and the computers.
At least the Wolverines could take some comfort in that they fell no further than No. 3.
Despite a win over in-state rival Florida State, Florida remained at No. 4, making an Ohio State-Michigan rematch a theoretical possibility (should UCLA spring the upset at the Rose Bowl on Saturday, of course).
The rest of the would-be title contenders fell by the wayside after a rough Thanksgiving weekend.
Notre Dame fell from No. 5 to No. 10 after the loss to USC. Arkansas, which still has a date in the SEC title game against Florida, dropped from No. 6 to No. 9 after losing to LSU. And West Virginia's inexplicable loss to South Florida knocked the Mountaineers all the way down to No. 15.
LSU moved up to No. 5, followed by Louisville. But it seems we're down to three teams with a realistic shot at a showdown with Ohio State -- USC, Michigan and Florida.
And only the Trojans control their own destiny.
