It was a slam-dunk day for the anti-Internet gambling zealots on Capitol Hill.
The 21-member U.S Senate Banking Committee unanimously passed the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act (S.627) on Thursday.
The legislation was introduced to the committee and passed without debate. It will now proceed to the Senate floor.
The proposed legislation, originally proposed Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., is often referred to as the Kyl bill.
The bill seeks to ban Americans from using credit cards, checks and electronic fund transfers to pay for online betting transactions, including sports bets.
Similar legislation was passed by the House of Representatives in June.
In anticipation of the legislation, banks across America have been blocking attempts by Americans to conduct transactions with online casinos and sportsbooks using their credit cards, namely Visa and MasterCard.
