Just remember if it ended today the A's would be golfing so that pitching hasn't earned them ANYTHING yet.

Exactly right Nut..And this Harden kid is the real deal to boot..A's can't score but when you only need 3-4 runs a nite to win make things easier..Pitching wins titles. bats just get you there..Sox are not a bust but they just won't win..lol...Never do win..Long as Steinbrenner breaths's Sox will not win..

I had about wrote the A's off..But with this Harden guy and now they get Guillen and the fact they have been hitting a little of late. All bodes in their favor..They have a much more favorable schedule than the Sox,,Tough 3 weeks for them here with the Yanks and Sox twice but rest is gravy..Think the AL is pretty much over after these 3 weeks..If the A's take care of business at home..And the great thing about good pitching, you are just as deadly on the road as well..

All I can say is that IF Red Sox had won Series at least once in the last 51 years, they would not be 9-1 to win it.
I am probably the oldest poster and have been a diehard Sox fan since I was 8 years old in 1952.
I have suffered countless disappointments and heartbreaks over the years and I would be foolish to say that they will win it this year.
That being said, I think other than the curse, and with recent acquisitions of Williamson abd Suppan, on paper at least this is the best Red Sox team I have seen in years, and their chance of winning the series is as good as anyone's.
Obviously, they will have to get a wildcard first or win their division, but I have a feeling that they will get the wildcard.
At the beginning of season, I made a nice size wager(on my scale which is somewhat lower than the real heavy hitters up here) for them to win more than 92 games and I took 4 1/2 -1 odds for them to win the pennant.
Yesterday as a show of confidence I made a small wager at 9-1 to win the Series, which is a lot better than the absurd 2.5 odds of Yankees, who I feel personally if they make it, wil be knocked out in first round like last year.
To me the key is if Williamson and Suppan can cut it.
Obviously they will need torrid hitting to continue to minimize the importance of pitching-that is, if they have a big lead late in game, hopefully pitching will be sufficient to carry them through.
It has been 85 years, true, but sometimes streaks do come to an end, and I really think Sox have as good as chance as anyone.

Not trying to be sarcastic but It's the same thing every year and the same result every year..I am southern and really have no interest in the Sox or Yanks so my heart is not invloved here..Im actually a Cardinal fan but I know they are going nowhere even if they get in..No pitching..Sox are 9-1 for one reason..They dont have the talent, pitching wise, to contend..Rangers just showed that..They have a nice stretch here with the A's and Mariners coming up on the road...I'll wait and see how they fare after facing 6 or 7 Good pitchers on the road..Losing 2 of 3 to the Rangers does not impress me much..

Everyone loses games-bookiebuster. Mariners got rocked twice by Texas at Seattle just recently.
I think Yanks are vastly overrated and do not deserve to be 2.5 if Braves are only 5.5 to 1 and SF at hefty7-1.
If Yanks can knocked out by Anaheim as they did last year, why would anyone think they should win it all;Wells and Clemens are not exactly spring chickens.
As stated Kim, Williamson, and now Suppan are keys now(assuming hitting remains0, and I see value at 9-1 for Sox jmho.
The point is there is no team that has a lock on this thing;even Braves got clobbered by Expos, and at times Yankees have their bad moments too.
I am more optimistic than I usually am around this time of year.

That's the whole thing with you die hard Sox fans but I gotta love you..lol...Yanks dont deserve to be an so on and so on..lol...Its too personal with ya'll and the Yanks..But if its any consolation I do like the Sox tonite...lol...But they have a killer schedule coming up and I just don't think they survive it..Have 7 coming up between Seattle and Oak and 3-4 would be great but I see more like a 2-5 and if they lose 3 of 4 to Oak they are done.A lot pends on how the A's handle the Yanks this weekend though...Well good luck with your Sox...

BookieBuster-I agree that if Sox can't hold their own in the large number of games they will be playing against Oakland and Seattle, then they do not deserve to make playoffs, especially against their chief competitor, Oakland;time will tell.

And you make good points about Clemons and Wells not being spring chickens..But then you look at Burkett,Wakefield,Mendoza and there is one thing to me that stands out.Clemons and Wells are Winners..Big time Winners on big time stages and any stage they have been on..Sox have made 2 major mistakes in the last 100 years and the Yanks have capitalized on both..Ruth and Clemons. Its hard to beat a team when you just give them 2 of the best players there have ever been..I really do enjoy the rivalry it has caused though..Fun to set back and watch the Sox try every year and say this will be the year..lol...Hope you do win one..One of these years..But you may have wait for the Boss to pass on..

                          Conclusion

many teams have a legitimate shot

Braves, Yanks, red Sox, A;s, Mariners

and dont bet Yankes 2.5-1 cause there is little value there

i hope i got it all

Bookie Buster-you are correct;its a scary though to think that a team, no matter how good the hitting is, would have to rely on Burkett, Mendoza, etc. to get them to the promised land.
A friend of mine pointed out that Wakefield is something like 6th in league in strikeouts;that amazed me, as even though he has been a good asset, I worry every time he goes out there that he won't get out of the first inning.
Hopefully Suppan will take the heat off some of the other guys re: starting pitchers.
