          NCAA BASKETBALL

Georgia Tech has four starters back from LY, and it recruited well, so expectations are high; they drilled Elon 82-49 in opener. Georgia State was 7-22 LY; they lost opener 72-66 vs Charleston

Arkansas State went 0-3 in Virginia; Sun Belt teams are 8-13 vs spread so far this season. Bowling Green has three starters back from 9-21 team. MAC teams are 5-10 against the spread.

USC opens their new arena tonight hosting a South Carolina team that is shaky 1-1, getting hammered by Cal-Irvine after it beat SC State only 55-52. USC's PG died tragically this summer, and his backup is currently ineligible.

Maryland beat Hampton (102-75), Vermont (81-63) last week at home, more impressive after Vermont beat BC. St John's is home at MSG here; they beat North Florida, Navy to get here, so hard to tell what they're about.

Michigan State beat Brown (45-34), Youngstown State (86-61) at home last week, Texas is young but loaded with talent; they beat Alcorn State (103-44), Chicago State (92-66) last week. Who knows? Spartans' talent levelis little bit down.

Troy State likes to run, shoot 3's; they lost 81-78 at Auburn in shootout (+8.5). Rhode Island lost in OT at home to Houston Monday (102-99) so this should be fast-paced game, but after a long plane ride to Alaska, will teams have jet lag?

Duke struggled for half with Georgia Southern Monday, then won 72-48, day after they crushed Columbia. NC-Greensboro lost 69-56 at Penn State Monday, 82-80 in OT at Marshall Sat. Duke beat them 102-69 last season (-23.5).

Samford plays like Princeton; they lost opener by 25 at Florida (+26), their eighth cover in last ten November games. Towson is 1-0 after beating Hartford 78-64 in their opener Monday. OVC, CAA teams are both 4-8 vs spread this season.

Southern Miss has lot of new players, supposedly better ones they won their opener 63-38. C-USA teams are 7-5 vs the spread. UT-Martin lost two of three in Cincinnati last week, losing by 3 to Howard, by 18 at Cincinnati.

              Minnesota at Nashville

Minnesota has had a tough road trip so far dropping three of four with the only win coming against the lower-rated Kings. But the last two losses have come by only a goal (to Anaheim and Phoenix) indicating that the Wild are still playing hard, but not getting any luck. They'll look to wrap it up tonight in Nashville against a Predator team that has gone 11-1-1 since losing three straight to start the season. Minnesota comes in a Vegas underdog, but still looks good enough to pull the upset according to Dunkel, which has the Wild favored straight up by 1/2 a goal. Dunkel Pick: Minnesota (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                Sacramento at Golden State

The Warriors have won three straight at home thanks to an up-tempo offense that has averaged 114 points per game over that span. But they should get tested tonight by a Sacramento team that is playing well for new coach Eric Musselman (four straight wins). The Kings look like a worthwhile underdog play in this one according to Dunkel, which has Sacramento favored straight up by 2. Dunkel Pick: Sacramento (+4). Here are all of today's games.

                  West Virginia at Pittsburgh
While the West Virginia-Pitt game is billed as the "Backyard Brawl" it's not clear just how much of a brawl it will be. Pittsburgh was on its way to a nice season when the Panthers ran their record to 6-1 with a 52-7 pounding of Central Florida. But a 20-10 loss to Rutgers at home started the Panthers on a three-game slide that culminated with a 46-45 overtime loss to lower-rated UConn last weekend. By contrast West Virginia rebounded nicely from its disappointing loss to Louisville with a 42-24 win over Cincinnati that was only that close because of two fourth quarter TDs by the Bearcats. With Pitt sliding, West Virginia looks capable of covering the Vegas line (-11) on the road according to Dunkel, which has West Virginia favored by 15. Dunkel Pick: West Virginia (-11).

                    Dunkel

                    Michigan State vs. Texas

Both Tom Izzo and Rick Barnes are having to break in young teams and the results in the early going may be sporadic. Of the two, though, Texas looks to be playing the better basketball right now after two lopsided wins over Alcorn State (103-44) and Chicago State (92-66). In their most recent game, Longhorn guard A.J. Abrams made eight three-pointers while collecting 28 points overall and freshman Kevin Durant collected his first collegiate double-double (21 points, 13 rebounds). The Spartans' attack has not looked as impressive with Drew Neitzel leading the way with a 13.7 scoring average. Texas looks like a good play to cover in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Longhorns favored by 9. Dunkel Pick: Texas (-5). Here are all of today's games.
