  • What's the possibility?

What's the possibility Boston has no real interest in signing Daisuke Matsuzaka? It's possible they only did so to prevent the Yanks from having signing rights. I can see no reason paying $51 million for the rights of an unproven pitcher. I don't think the Sox will be offering this pitcher a huge contract.

I agree. They have a $ and year threshold and will stay with that, knowing this player has no other choice regardless what the agent says. I would say 3 - 4 years max at some type of incentive laden deal worth 7 - 9 million. If he wants more years or dollars I think they say "then go back".

Something like this IMO, not chump change but I do not think he gets 5 years $60 million. South of that

red sox have all the leverage here now.

he can only negotiate exclusively with the red sox. and to top it off. if an agreement cannot be reached with in 30days the deal is void. Red sox get their $$$ back and he goes back to japan. i would think it would be a 4yr deal with a option of a 5th year @ or near $10 million per season.

As stated before, if nothing else it indicates that Sox do have the money and weakens their argument that they really wanted to sign someone like Damon.
In short I agree that it is either a lot to pay an unproven pitcher in the USA that is, and shows that Sox way of looking at things makes no sense and/or is hypocritical(as evidenced by the fact that they let so many proven players leave or be traded from the championship team, something they had not achieved in 86 years).
Believe me they could have kept at least a few of the players like Cabrera, Damon, etc. if they went the extra yard.
As I said elsewhere, if they do sign this guy, and it necessitates ridding themselves of Manny to save some money to finance the former, I will consider it a horrendous and stupid move.

Bry, I think some people aren't aware that if the Sox can't sign him they get their $$$$ back.

Frank, what is also true from what I understand is they now can trade the right to negotiate with him as well. So they could pay the $51M, trade the rights to say someone like Texas for talent. Doubt they will, but the have tremendous leverage in these negotiations!!

i agree. most think if sox dont sign him they lose the 51mill.....this is not true. 51 mill only gets paid to his former team if he signs with the red sox.

Dont you guys think that his Jap. team will be pushing (as hard as humanly possible) for him to sign - i mean to put in perspective $51 mil is 4 times what the entire payroll of the Marlins was this year; I think the Jap. team will try and get this deal done so they can cash that check
