What's the possibility Boston has no real interest in signing Daisuke Matsuzaka? It's possible they only did so to prevent the Yanks from having signing rights. I can see no reason paying $51 million for the rights of an unproven pitcher. I don't think the Sox will be offering this pitcher a huge contract.

Something like this IMO, not chump change but I do not think he gets 5 years $60 million. South of that2012 - 2013 NCAAF

red sox have all the leverage here now.
he can only negotiate exclusively with the red sox. and to top it off. if an agreement cannot be reached with in 30days the deal is void. Red sox get their $$$ back and he goes back to japan. i would think it would be a 4yr deal with a option of a 5th year @ or near $10 million per season.2013 NCAA POD Record

In short I agree that it is either a lot to pay an unproven pitcher in the USA that is, and shows that Sox way of looking at things makes no sense and/or is hypocritical(as evidenced by the fact that they let so many proven players leave or be traded from the championship team, something they had not achieved in 86 years).
Believe me they could have kept at least a few of the players like Cabrera, Damon, etc. if they went the extra yard.
As I said elsewhere, if they do sign this guy, and it necessitates ridding themselves of Manny to save some money to finance the former, I will consider it a horrendous and stupid move.Last edited by savage1; 11-15-2006, 09:57 AM.
