Everything i've heard up here Doc says that Boras doesn't have much leverage in this 1st deal he signs. I heard that it would be around 10-11 million a year 'cause they do get somewhat of a discount for the 1st contract because of the bid. They said Boras can't use other teams or much else against the Red Sox but that the next deal he signs in 3-4 years could be all up to Boras at that point. We will see .......

NAPLES, Fla. -- The Boston Red Sox emerged Tuesday night as winners of the bidding for Daisuke Matsuzaka with a $51.1 million offer and have 30 days to sign the Japanese pitcher to a contract.

The Seibu Lions of Japan's Pacific League announced they had accepted the high bid -- ESPN's Peter Gammons this week reported the figure to be $42 million -- for their prized pitcher, and the major league commissioner's office simultaneously confirmed at the general managers' meetings that the Red Sox had made the offer.

"We're very pleased and excited. We've long admired Mr. Matsuzaka, " Boston general manager Theo Epstein said. "Matsuzaka has a real talent. He would be a great fit with the Red Sox organization.

"We're excited to have won this part of the process. We're hopeful we can reach an agreement."

Even before the announcement, general managers had assumed Boston would be the highest bidder in the blind process.

"We'll congratulate the winner and move on, " New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman said Tuesday afternoon.

Matsuzaka is represented by Scott Boras, who last year negotiated the deal that moved center fielder Johnny Damon from the Red Sox to the Yankees.

I am more convinced than ever more than ever that this signing shows the hypocrisy of the Sox;pay an unproven pitcher (as far as Red Sox are concerned) multi millions and yet can't go the extra yard to pay Damon.
Personally, if this in any way expedites the departure of Manny(to save money), it is a terrible move in my mind;if Manny stays, then ok, even though I thibk the price is way too high.

Who was the bust pitcher for Yankees from Japan that Steinbrenner deemed the "fat toad?" I can't think of his name.
Sure hope this guy doesn't turn out the same way.

With the fragility of pitchers, I don'' think any pitcher is worth the kind of money Sox or any team is willing to pay.
For a great everday player say like Pujols, I might pay it, but for someone who pitches every 5th day, no way especially with no track record in baseball in the US and especialli in pressure filled BOSTON!
