From what im hearing the Red Sox spent 51 mill just to talk to him that isnt what they will have to offer him to get him to come to Boston and pitch.. And if they dont reach an agreement he will have to go back to Japan and pitch 1 full season there before he can become a "Free Agent".. Thats alot of Jack for a Jap guy that they have never seen pitch that much.. Can we say another Heido Nomo??

      tmac,

you are correct, but if the sox dont sign him they get 51million back. 51 mil only applies if he signs with boston.

Yeah they have to give the guy the 51 mil just for talking to him and IF he signs then they have to offer him another figure and they must agree on that.. Man they sure are willing to spend a lot of $ on this 1 guy.. WOW

Boston controls these contract talks, not Boras. The whole point behind it is getting it done because the Japanese team WANTS the money, therefore the 1st contract WILL get done quickly. The next contract, Boras will bleed a team dry but in this one, he gets NOTHING if the deal doesn't get done and he goes back to Japan.

The Red Sox will make that $51 million back twice over in Japan where they are already planning to Market him everywhere with the Boston Logo. Don't assume this money is lost after they pay it out. They WILL get it back ... and quickly!

Yanks bid was $35 million...this guy dominated in the WBC...it is a lot of cash, but if he is as good as advertised, you have Papelbon, Beckett and DMat all at the age of 26...POTENTIALLY a devastating trio...POTENTIALLY.

It is a very wise investment by the Sox...as they will quickly earn back the $51 million as you point out. They are already planning on hiring a Jap. marketing guy to put in Japan starting in January.

This could be a $100 million deal that may not cost them a dime in the long run....

Yup ... If the guy doesn't do a thing in Boston, the Red Sox will have made a HUGE profit on him in the end and it won't have cost them anything. They are even planning on offering Sushi for the 1st time next year at Fenway park. They are going to maximize this guy and probably make many millions on him when all is said and done!

If I have to hear Ben Aflack say how lame it is that the Yankees spend all this money I'm gonna shoot him. Some teams payrolls aren't $50 million.

This $50 million would still put us about $30 million short of the NYY '06 payroll. There you go, i said it!
