  • NY crime family members face gambling ring charges

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Members of two of New York's top crime families were among 11 people charged on Thursday with running an illegal gambling ring at fruit, vegetable and meat markets in the city, authorities said.

Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said the ring took in about $1 million a year in bets. At least four of the men charged were part of the Genovese crime family and one was a member of the Lucchese crime family.

"As part of the investigation search warrants were executed in 16 locations resulting in the seizure of numerous gambling records as well at $162,937 in cash," Morgenthau said in a statement.

He said eight of the men were indicted on enterprise corruption charges, and the remaining three were charged with gambling-related crimes. The charges followed a 17-month investigation that included phone taps and a car bug.

The Genovese and Lucchese families are part of the traditional mob, known as the five families of New York.
