    Six-Pack for Wednesday

Six things that wouldn't shock me if they happened.......

-- If Larry Brown wound up coaching a high school team, then sued the school district for his full salary when he quit during the season.

-- If Oakland Raiders signed Drew Bledsoe for 2007.

-- If neither Ohio State or Michigan won football national title this season.

-- If A's infield defense suffered with Ron Washington gone to Texas.

-- If NBA became first American pro sports league to have a European Division.

-- If Bill Cowher was next football coach at NC State.

    Wednesday's List of 13:

    Random mid-week thoughts..........

    13) A's are going to build their own 36,000-seat baseball stadium in Fremont, 27 miles from Oakland, 18 from San Jose, in move that will greatly help their franchise.

    12) Stadium is just outside of Giants' territorial rights, but close enough to San Jose that they should really upgrade their revenue intake. Ton of people in that area.

    11) When Lewis Wolff bought the A's, and I read he was frat brother of Bud Selig, I had good feeling, since Selig isn't bringing in one of his boys unless there was opportunity for success. Now we know……..

    10) All twelve SEC football coaches should return in '07, but if Alabama gets stupid and fires Mike Shula, that changes. Be real, people; Shula is doing good job under tough conditions (probation-riddled recruiting). Have some freakin' patience.

    9) Wonder if all these QB injuries in college will sway some coaches away from pass-oriented offenses. College football runs in cycles; is a run-happy cycle due soon?

    8) Carmelo Anthony must have enjoyed his one year out at Syracuse; he gave the school $3M today, to be used on new basketball practice facility. As if he hadn't done enough for the Orangemen already.

    7) I can't envision Allen Iverson giving Georgetown money for practice facility, as he doesn't exactly embrace "practice"

    6) Watching Miami in last few minutes vs Seattle Tuesday, it is Dwyane Wade going 1-on-5 at every key juncture; finally, Miami won game when Wade actually passed ball to Posey, who drilled game-winning trey, with no one even close to him The NBA has gotten better, but still ton of 1-on-1 (or 2,3,4)

    5) Three of last year's college hoop Final Four teams weren't in the preseason top 25. Go figure.

    4) Hampton will be interesting college hoop team to follow as the season goes on; they jacked up 44 treys at Maryland, and sent Terrapins to foul line 54 times. They had a top 50 class in recruiting this year, which should make them a player in the MEAC race fairly soon.

    3) Vermont's win over New Orleans is boost for America East and kick in head for Sun Belt. Privateers didn't look good for team picked near top of their conference.

    2) Thank the Lord Election Day is over. National committees spent a fortune in our area on our assembly race, and it was not in the district I live in, so I had to watch 100 commercials in a race I couldn't vote in. Please go away now.

    1) The main problem with politicians who win elections by bashing their opponent is this: once they win, they they are on the hot seat, they have to actually do something, instead of ripping the guy who was in there. Lets see how they do.

Vermont hammered New Orleans last night, 82-65, hitting eight of 15 3's; they'll play smarter than Hampton did last night, as Maryland took 54 foul shots in easy win. UVM coach Lonergan won D-III national title at Catholic, and was also an assistant at Maryland for a year. Both teams are experienced. Vermont isn't going to get wide open 3's like they did last night, and Terps will not get 54 fouls hots, but they are superior team here.

Central Michigan was 4-24 LY, 1-17 in MAC, so they have new coach; Chippewas won 20 games in three years since Clippers' Kaman was at Central; so former UCLA assistant Ziegler is new coach. Is it good to have all five starters back from 4-24 team? Ziegler worked for Ben Howland, so he'll strees defense. As for Youngstown State, they were 7-21 LY, and didn't win game after Jan 28. They scored more points LY, but played less defense.

Michigan State loses four starters from last year, so they're in a rebuilding mode; as result, their schedule has been softened. They're not deep, but they have some good players- any repeat of last year's injuries would be a disaster. Brown's coach left for Penn (anytime coach leaves for team in same league, it is a huge slap in face to where he left) so Bruins (10-17, 6-8 in Ivy LY) are also in transition mode, as new coach is another Princeton guy, and that princeton stuff takes long time to get used to.

Twenty things to know about the 2006-07 college basketball season:

        1. Big games - There will be plenty of big-time matchups to hold everyone over until conference play begins in January. Top-ranked Florida meets No. 3 Kansas in Las Vegas on Nov. 25. The Maui Invitational could have a championship matchup of No. 6 UCLA and No. 15 Memphis. The Big Ten-ACC Challenge provides No. 4 Ohio State at No. 2 North Carolina on Nov. 29. Ohio State has another big nonconference game on Dec. 23, visiting defending champion Florida.

        2. Coaching milestone - Bob Knight of Texas Tech needs 11 wins for 880 in his career to pass former North Carolina coach Dean Smith for first place on the all-time list for Division I men. It could come in a three-game home stretch against Bucknell (Dec. 23), UNLV (Dec. 28) or New Mexico (Jan. 1), if not it would happen against a Big 12 opponent.

        3. Coaching changes - Bobby Cremins (College of Charleston), Bob Huggins (Kansas State) and Todd Bozeman (Morgan State) all return to the coaching ranks after various amounts of time away for various reasons. The Big 12 had six of the 59 coaching changes this offseason with Greg McDermott (Iowa State), Mike Anderson (Missouri), Doc Sadler (Nebraska), Jeff Capel (Oklahoma) and Sean Sutton (Oklahoma State) joining Huggins as those in new positions.

        4. Moving teams - After a season where it seemed every league had a change or two, the movement was slight this offseason, with five schools making moves and one conference having more than one (Florida Atlantic and Louisiana-Monroe moved to the Sun Belt).

        5. Competing teams - There are 325 Division I members this season, down from 2005-06 with Birmingham Southern leaving for nonscholarship Division III. Two schools - UC Davis and Northern Colorado - will become officials Division I members next season.

        6. Coaching farewells - Some coaches have already made their plans known for after this season either by announcing their retirement or resignation: Ricardo Patton, Colorado; Riley Wallace, Hawaii; and Byron Samuels, Radford.

        7. Tough schedule - When Ron Everhart was the coach at Northeastern, he had 6-foot-10 Shawn James, who led the nation last season with 6.5 blocked shots per game. Everhart left for Duquesne and James later followed as a transfer - but the Huskies` schedule stayed the same. First-year coach Bill Coen will have non-conference road games against Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Connecticut, Louisville and Boston College.

        8. Road streak - Clemson has never won at North Carolina, a streak covering 52 games, tied for an NCAA record. But it won`t be broken this year, when the Atlantic Coast Conference`s unbalanced schedule means the only meeting between the Tigers and Tar Heels is at Clemson.

        9. Leading scorer - The leading returning scorer from last season is 6-4 guard Rodney Stuckey of Eastern Washington, who averaged 24.2 points and became the first freshman to be named Big Sky conference player of the year. Adam Morrison of Gonzaga led the nation last season with a 28.1 average, but the junior forward left for the NBA.

        10. New rebound leader - For the first time since the 2002-03 season there will be a new leading rebounder in Division I. Paul Millsap, a 6-8, 245-pound forward from Louisiana Tech, became the first player to lead the country in rebounding for three straight seasons, left school early and was taken in the second round of the NBA draft by the Utah Jazz. Millsap averaged 12.5 rebounds as a freshman, 12.4 as a sophomore and 13.3 last season. Rashad Jones-Jennings, who averaged 11.3 last season as a junior at Arkansas-Little Rock, is the leading returning rebounder.

        11. Sweet charity - Blake Ahearn of Missouri State shot 93.6 percent from the free throw line last season to lead Division I in that category for the third straight season. The 6-2 Ahearn shot an NCAA-record 97.5 percent as a freshman and 94.7 as a sophomore. In his three seasons he has missed 16 of 340 free throws.

        12. NIT picking - The National Invitation Tournament has been decreased from 40 teams to 32, a move that could hurt some big-time coaches who may be on the hot seat and need any postseason bid. The NIT will guarantee a berth to any conference`s regular-season champion that loses in the league`s postseason tournament.

        13. Tragic starts - Three programs will start the season with missing teammates on their minds. Southern California is recovering from the loss of freshman point guard Ryan Francis, who was shot and killed in May while riding in a car in Baton Rouge, La., where he was visiting his mother. Georgia junior guard Kevin Brophy, a native of Australia, was killed in a two-car accident in July as he was returning from working at a free basketball camp for kids. Toledo backup center Haris Charalambous, a native of England, died less than a week before practice began of a ruptured blood vessel to his heart. Then there were the five players from Duquesne who were on campus after attending a school function. All are expected to recover.

        14. Hall of Fame - The National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame will have its inaugural class inducted on Nov. 19 at Kansas City`s Crown Center Exhibit Hall. The first class includes Dr. James Naismith, John Wooden, Dean Smith, Oscar Robertson and Bill Russell.

        15. Remote control - College basketball will again be a television staple from November until April. CBS will have 53 regular-season games featuring teams from nine conferences, then will televise the NCAA tournament. The ESPN family of networks will televise over 1,000 games with all 31 conferences represented. And the weeknight fare will include: Big Monday, Super Tuesday, ACC Wednesday and Throwdown Thursday.

        16. Fifth-year transfers - Players who completed their degrees in four years, had a year of eligibility remaining and wanted to transfer to another Division I school were able to take advantage of a new rule - Proposal 2005-54 - that allowed them to play immediately at their new school. Kevin Kruger transferred from Arizona State, where he was the Sun Devils` leading scorer, to play for his father, Lon, at UNLV, while Jermaine Maybank transferred from St. John`s to Kansas State.

        17. Brewing rivalry - Marquette and Wisconsin-Milwaukee, which are about 10 miles apart in downtown Milwaukee, announced a five-year deal last week to resume their series, which hadn`t been played since 1998. Marquette leads the all-time series 34-0.

        18. Returning All-Americas - Of the 15 players selected to last season`s three All-America teams, only three are back for 2006-07 and all three were third-team selections. Nick Fazekas of Nevada, Glen ``Big Baby`` Davis of LSU and Tyler HanXXXough of North Carolina are the only returnees.

        19. Same name - Georgetown`s resurgence started with a familiar name running the program as John Thompson III led the Hoyas back into the NCAA tournament last season for the first time since 2001, reaching the round of 16. If the success continues, another familiar name will be involved as 6-8 forward Pat Ewing is eligible this season after transferring from Indiana. His father, who went by Patrick, led the Hoyas to three Final Fours, including the 1984 national championship.

        20. March Madness - Selection Sunday is March 11, with the opening-round game at Dayton, Ohio, two days later. The regional sites this season are San Antonio, San Jose, Calif., East Rutherford, N.J. and St. Louis. The Final Four is March 31 and April 2 in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, and if you`re looking for any omens, the only other time the national championship was decided in that building was in 2002 when Maryland won it all for the first time. Atlanta`s only other Final Four was in 1977, when Al McGuire and Marquette won the title in the Omni.

          Saturday's games
Maryland won last four games, all by six or less points, and are surprising 7-2; they're 1-3 vs. spread as favorite, as dog covered six of their eight lined games this season. Miami lost last two games, is just 5-4, amid rumors coaching change is in store, with no real #1 candidate emerging. Seven of Miami's eight lined games this season stayed under total, but four of last five Terp games went over. Miami had player shot and killed shortly after he left practice Tuesday.

Purdue scored 39.3 ppg in winning last three meetings vs. Illinois- they whacked Illini 37-3 LY (-23) (391-265 TY, +3 TOs). Illinois lost last five games and is 2-8, but they played Wisconsin (30-24), Ohio State (17-10) tough last two weeks- they held Buckeyes to 224 yards LW. Boilers are 2-4 in last six games, but won last two road games; all four of their losses are by 12+ points. 2-8 team favored over 6-3 team?

Paterno had broken leg operated on Monday; hard to imagine Penn State game without him, even vs. doormat Temple squad that covered last three games and five of last six. Over is 7-2 in last nine Owl games. PSU lost 13-3 in Madison LW (TY 201-340); they scored 12 or less points in three of last four games, with 33-7 their biggest win vs. I-A foes so far this season.

South Florida blanked Syracuse 27-0 in Carrier Dome LY (-8), outrushing Orange 338-117 in game that was 13-0 at half; Bulls upset Pitt at home last week to get bowl eligible rushing for 191 yards and picking three Palko passes- they're 3-1 at home vs.
D-I foes, with wins by 1,22,10 pts. Syracuse lost last four games (by 10,24,15,14 points) but is 7-2 vs. spread this season, 3-1 as road underdog.

Michigan has Ohio State next week, so continued sluggish play (22 ppg last four weeks) possible as they withhold stuff from Buckeye spies. Wolverines outrushed Indiana 216-63 in LY's
41-14 win (425-210 TY, 41-7 at half). Hoosiers got waxed last wk 63-26 last week by 4-6 Gopher squad; their last three losses are by 35,41,37 points. Six of last seven Michigan games stayed under the total.

Iowa is 2-4 in last six games, losing as 20-point home favorite LW; they beat Wisconsin 20-10 LY, rallying from 10-3 halftime deficit, outrushing Badgers 166-19 which offset -2 turnover ratio, but Wisconsin is on roll this year at 9-1, with six-game win streak. Badgers allowed 10.2 ppg in last five games. In second halves of last five games, Badgers outscored foes 81-9. QB Tate played LW, but Northwestern outgained Iowa 445-266.

Boston College passed for 402 yards at Wake last week but lost 21-14, committing ten penalties and running ball for just 28 yds. Eagles are 2-3 vs. spread as favorite in '06, and 1-4 vs. spread in last five November home games. Duke is 0-9, losing three road games at Wake (14-13), Va Tech (36-0), Alabama (30-14)- they allowed 673 rushing yards in last two games, losses vs. Vandy, Navy. Four of last five BC games stayed under total.

Underdog covered eight of last 12 Georgia Tech-UNC games, with Tech winning four of last five (wins by 7,17,6,21 points). Carolina is 0-8 vs. I-A teams this year (2-5 vs. spread as dog) with home losses by 5,25,17,7 points- they have only one INT all season, and no takeaways in last three games. Tech scored 30,31 pts in beating Miami, NC State last two weeks; this could be third lame-duck coach in row they've faced.

Visitor covered last four Cincinnati-West Va games, with WVa outgaining UC 406-269 in last meeting, a 38-0 Moutaineer road win (-14). WVa had first loss last week at Louisville (44-34); interesting to see how they react, since all their wins had been by 17+ pts. Bearcats won four of last five games behind defense that allowed only 11.2 ppg in last five games. Last seven Bearcat games stayed under the total.

Xavier Lee once again gets nod at QB for Florida State squad favored by TD over 8-1 Wake Forest for one reason: name of two schools. Wake lost last three visits to Doak Campbell (24-28 /24-48/24-41), but Seminoles are 3-4 in last seven games- they held Virginia to 190 TY last week in 33-0 win, but Wake beat Boston College last week, their third win in row, eighth in nine games. Under is 6-1-1 in Wake Forest games.

Kentucky won last two games, vs. Miss State, Georgia, now can become bowl eligible with win vs. Vandy squad that needs this win and upset in Knoxville next week to get to 6-6 for season. UK is 4-1 at home, losing only to South Carolina (17-24); they're riding +9 turnover margin and athletic QB Woodson to bowl bid. Vandy won last two games on road, covered four of five on foreign soil this year; their last four games went over total.

Marshall won, covered its last three games, scoring 38 ppg, but they're 1-4 vs. spread as underdog TY, losing road games at WVa (42-10), K-State (23-7), Tennessee (33-7) and SMU (31-21). Herd is 19-35 on 3rd down last three games, so they're making plays. East Carolina won 34-29 at Marshall LY (+4.5); they're 8-1 vs. spread this season, 16-4 under Holtz in his two years at ECU (4-0 vs. spread as favorite this season).

Navy covered eight of last ten as road favorite; they're 4-0 away from home TY, winning at Stanford (37-9), UConn (41-17), Duke (38-13) and Air Force (24-17). Middies using backup QB; they're 1-3 vs spread as favorite TY. Eastern Michigan covered its last four games, all decided by six or less points. Six of last seven Eastern games stayed under total. Eagles allowed Ohio to run for 278 yards last week, bad omen with Navy option coming in.

Kent State had been 5-0 in MAC, then they lost 17-7 to Ohio U, and got outscored 38-0 in second half of meltdown at Buffalo last week- they're 4-1 vs spread as underdog. Virginia Tech won, covered last three games by 30,17,7 pts, but with Hokies off of Clemson, Miami wins and 8-1 Wake Forest up next, letdown is a possibility here. ACC home favorites are 6-11 vs spread out of conference. MAC road dogs are 11-13-1.

Underdog covered seven of last nine Colorado State-Utah tilts, with Rams losing 63-31 in last visit here (they got revenge last year, with 21-17 win at home). Visitor is 10-4 vs spread in series. Utah covered 10 of last 13 after bye; they're 2-3 last five games overall. State lost last four games, amid rumors Coach Lubick is stepping down after season. Last five CSU games stayed under.

Texas Aggies covered last five games, but lost 17-16 to Sooners last week, when A&M kicked FG with under 4:00 left, down by 4 points- odd decision, and they never got ball back. Their losses this season are by 1,4 pts. Six of last seven A&M games stayed under total. Huskers beat Missouri last week, snapping 2-game slide; they gained 452,422 yards in last two games, so offense is healthy, even if lot of their defensive players aren't.

Tennessee suspended one of their RBs after arrest in nightclub after last week's LSU loss; Ainge's status (ankle) unknown here, so Hogs may be facing another backup QB- they survived last week when Gamecocks reinserted starter Mitchell in second half and he played like Johnny Unitas, falling just short in 26-20 loss. Arkansas won last eight games ince loss in opener; they ran it for 267 yards in Columbia last week, impressive number.

Southern Miss on road after Sunday night road game, so a very short work week for Ggolden Eagle squad that beat Tulane 26-7 LY (-21.5), winning 66% of third down plays, but USM's win at Memphis Sunday was just second in last five games. Tulane is 2-5 in last seven games; eight of their nine games this season went over total, as Green Wave using no-huddle offense that is helping their offense, putting more pressure on their defense.

Spunky Rice won at UTEP last week, their third win in row, all as the underdog, but this is also their sixth road game in last seven games (eight weeks)- last seven Rice games went over the total. Tulsa won 41-21 at Rice last year (-7) but both sides are better in '06. Tulsa had six-game win streak snapped last wk at Houston, but Hurricane is 3-0 vs I-A teams at home (2-1 as home favorite) winning by 25,14,10 points.

Central Michigan won last four games by an average score of 33-17; they're 4-0 vs. spread at home TY (3-1 SU), winning by 3, 11,17 points. Home side is 10-5-1 vs. spread in last 16 Central-Western games, with Broncos losing last visit here in OT, their only loss in last five series games. Western won their last four games, three by three or less points; they're 2-2 on road this season, 3-1 vs. spread as underdog.

Texas-El Paso is in freefall, losing three games in row, allowing 33.7 ppg; in those games, Miners were outrushed 596-143, as UTEP offense has become unbalanced. UAB went to El Paso and beat UTEP 35-23 LY (+8), picking off three passes that offset 485-373 edge for Miners in total yardage. UAB also lost last three games, by 1,7,13 points; they're 3-2 at home this season. UTEP is 1-3 on road, losing by 13,10,17 points.
