          Saturday

Ball State lost 24-23 at home to Indiana, 38-28 at Purdue, and is just 1-3 vs. spread as dog in MAC games this season. Cardinals are 10-6-1 vs. spread in last 17 November road games. Michigan coasting towards Ohio State games, two weeks from now; they have held last six opponents to 14 or less points, but scored total of just 37 in last two games. Last six Michigan games went under the total.

Northwestern held Michigan to 17 points LW, after allowing 34.8 ppg in previous five games, but they're facing Iowa team they stunned LY 28-27, scoring two TDs in lasat 2:10 of game, with help of onside kick. Hawkeyes sat injured QB Tate LW; before last year, they won last two games vs. Wildcats, 62-10/ 59-16. Iowa covered 17 of last 21 November games; Wildcats covered four of last 13 November road tilts.

Wake Forest covered its three games vs. Boston College, winning first two as dog, then blowing 9-point lead in last 3:30 LY, but Deacons covered just one of last 13 November games, as lack of depth has usually done them in. Both sides are 7-1, with Wake off tough 24-17 win at UNC, while BC had breather vs. Buffalo, game starting QB Ryan sat out due to injury. Under is 5-1-1 in Wake Forest games.

In first half of their last six games, Michigan State has been outscored 105-13, so can't lay any points with team whose only win in that span came after they trailed 38-3 in third quarter. Purdue lost four of last five games, but all four losses were vs. Top 20 teams- State doesn't fit in there. Home side is 10-1-2 vs. spread in this series, but Purdue won last visit here (45-42, -3) and is 9-2-2 vs. spread in last 13 November games.

Pitt won last two meetings vs. South Florida (43-14/31-17) after Bulls upset them 35-26 in previous meeting. Both sides had last week off, Panthers after home loss to Rutgers, USF after 23-6 Sunday night loss at Cincinnati, a cold weather game. Pitt is 3-0 on road this season, winning at Cincinnati (33-15), Syracuse (21-11), UCF (52-7). USF is 2-1 at home vs. I-A teams, losing 22-20 to unbeaten Rutgers.

Home side is 12-2-1 vs. spread, favorite 8-4-1 in Iowa St-Kansas games, with Jayhawks losing last two visits to Ames (3-45/ 7-13) Kansas covered just nine of last 31 games on grass; Cyclones are 4-10 vs. spread in last 14 November tilts. Kansas has led in second half or gone to OT in every game this season, while ISU lost its last four games, allowing 33.8 ppg, and is 2-6 vs. spread this season.

Home side covered nine of last 12 Indiana-Minnesota games, with Gophers 5-2 vs. spread in last seven, winning last meeting at this site, 55-7; average total in last five series games is 64. Hoosiers covered only two of last 14 November games, but they're 5-4 and can go bowling if they win here or at Purdue (they won't beat Michigan). Gophers lost 44-0 at Ohio State, week after sneaking by North Dakota State 10-9, so not very enthused about their chances.

Visitor is 8-4-1 vs. spread, underdog 5-0 in recent Georgia Tech-NC State games; Tech won their last two visits to Raleigh (24-17 /24-14), and is off 30-23 win vs. Miami, while Wolfpack lost last three games and is 2-5 vs. I-A foes, under cloud of possible coaching change. State's 17-14 win in Atlanta LY (+4.5) was their only one in last five series games. Tech is 1-1 on road, upsetting Va Tech, losing 31-7 at Clemson.

Maryland covered 14 of last 21 November games, five of last six vs. Clemson, splitting last two visits here; Terrapins are 6-2 this year, winning last three games by 2,6,3 points, with only losses 45-24 at West Virginia (+16), 27-23 at Georgia Tech (+14). Tigers had six-game win streak snapped in Blacksburg last Thursday; Clemson is 4-0 at home in lined games, winning by 48,45,51,24 points (47-5 average).

Florida in Georgia/Spurrier sandwich; dangerous spot for them. Visiting team is 8-3 vs. spread in last 11 Florida-Vanderbilt games, with Gators winning last two visits here, 21-17 (-21), 34-17 (-12), but covering only four of last 12 in series; last year, Vandy missed out on rare bowl appearance when they lost 49-42 in OT at Swamp, thanks to -4 TO ratio. Only one of last five Vandy losses is by more than eight points.

Ohio State won last four games by combined score of 161-17; Buckeyes speed big reason why Buckeyes covered last four games on carpet; they're also 11-6-1 vs. spread in last eighteen November games, and facing Illinois squad they rolled 40-2 LY (526-160 TY). Illinois covered three of last 10 November games, but they hung tough with Wisconsin LW (TY 316-292W) and are improving (only team to outgain them by more than 29 yards is Rutgers).

Temple snapped 20-game losing streak last week, beating future MAC rival Bowling Green; now they face surprising Central Michigan squad that is only unbeaten squad in MAC play (5-0, 5-3 overall). Owls are 5-9 vs. spread in game after their last 14 wins, which covers lot of years- they're 11-7 vs. spread in last 18 November games. Chippewas have big MAC tilt with Western Michigan next week.

Navy beat Duke last two years (28-21/27-12); they outrushed Devils 326-179 LY. Middies lost their 43rd game in row vs. Notre Dame LW, their second loss in row with QB Hampton out for year (knee). Duke is at home for fourth week in row, losing last three by 27,5,17 points- they have covered nine of last dozen November games. Navy is 0-3 vs. spread as a favorite this season; their wins are by 5,1,28,24,7 points.

Ohio U won its last four games, three of which it was favored to lose; they're 2-2 on road this season, 1-1 as favorite. Five of their last seven games stayed under total, as did five of last six Eastern Michigan games. Eastern is just 1-7 but covered its last three, beating Toledo 17-13 and losing at Bowling Green (24-21) and Western Michigan (18-15). Last time these teams met was '03, when Eagles lost 55-27 at Ohio (+8).

Buffalo won 10-6 at Kent LY (+7), as Flashes lost their last nine games in '05; this year, Kent is 5-3, 4-1 in MAC (they lost 17-7 to Ohio LW) but just 1-2 vs. spread as favorite. Buffalo lost its last two games by combined score of 83-7; since beating Temple in their opener, Bulls lost last seven games, allowing average of 41.9 peg. Six of last eight Kent games stayed under the total.

Georgia is favored for 29th time in row vs. Kentucky (3-25 SU last 28); they won last five games vs. UK by average score of 46-19, winning last two visits to Lexington by 52-24/62-17 scores. 4-4 Wildcats have losses by 31,19,7,49 points; they need to split last four games to go bowling, but play Vandy and UL-Monroe the next two weeks, which helps. Dawgs lost three of last four games, with lone win 27-24 vs. Miss State, so they're struggling right now.

                    Week 9

                    Sunday

Chiefs (4-3) @ Rams (4-3)-Chiefs won four of last five games, scoring 30,35 in last two; they averaged 6.0+ yards per pass attempt in their four wins (4.2/5.5/4.4 in losses). Rams allowed 6.2+ yds/pass in five of last six games. St Louis has 14 takeaways in its four wins (+12 turnover ratio), two in its three losses (-2); Ram offense has been good enough to win, but defense doesn't force many punts (26th in NFL in forced 3/outs), allowing 20+ first downs in each of last five games. Chiefs scored 13 TDs in 42 drives at home, but only three in 35 on road (lost two of three on foreign soil).

Bengals (4-3) @ Ravens (5-2)- Bengals' last three games were all decided by three or less points, but Cincy lost three of last four games, with no INTs in last four games- they scored 30 ppg in winning last three games vs. Ravens, and won their last two visits to this site, after having lost previous seven. Three of last four series totals in Baltimore were 44+. Ravens scored TDs on last five red zone drives; they allowed 23,22 points in their losses, are 4-1 allowing 14 or less points. Bengals are moving the chains, converting 60 for last 132 on third down (45.5%); they're 4-1 if they score 17+ points.

Texans (2-5) @ Giants (5-2)-Red-hot Giants 4-0 since their bye, with all four wins by 13+ points; in second half of their last six games, they outscored foes 111-36. In their last two home games, Giants allowed no TDs on 22 drives, forcing 13 3/outs. Houston is 2-5, with four losses by 14+ points; they yanked Carr for Rosenfels last week, and the backup sparked a Texan rally, so will be interesting to see if team rallies around Carr here- they ran ball for 140 yds/game last two weeks, after averaging 67.6 ypg in first five. Texans upset Giants 16-14 in Houston four years ago, in teams' only previous meeting.

Titans (2-5) @ Jaguars (4-3)- Can Titans score 20+ points? Jaguars allowed 21,36,27 points in their three losses, a total of 23 in their four wins. Jags are 3-0 at home, winning by 7,9,41 points; their defense allowed three TDs in last 33 drives over last three games. After 0-5 start, Titans scored 25,28 points in winning last two; they lost here 40-13 LY, their first loss in last four visits to Alltel, in series where visitor is 5-3 SU in last eight meetings. Jags have no takeaways in last two games, but won in Philly with backup QB Garrard playing. Titans have four TDs on last 22 drives, after having six in first 55.

Cowboys (4-3) @ Redskins (2-5)- Washington lost last three games, giving up 153 rushing yards/game, with no takeaways- they allowed 61 points in last two games. Skins are 0-5 if they score less than 31 pts. Cowboys allowed 14 or less pts in their wins, 24-38-36 in losses. Dallas (-6.5) won first meeting 27-10 in penalty-filled Week 2 game, their 14th win in last 18 games vs. this rival; Redskins were 2-14 on third down, got outrushed 138-93, and had no offensive TDs in 11 drives, with six 3/outs. If you wager halftime lines, know that in last five Dallas games, average of 31.6 second half pts were scored.

Packers (3-4) @ Bills (2-5)- Home side won seven of last eight series games, as Green Bay has never won (0-4) in Buffalo, losing by 7-28-9-9 points, but last visit here was '00. Packers scored 31,34,31 pts in their wins, average 14 peg in losses; they're 3-1 if game goes over total, 0-3 if it doesn't. Buffalo lost last three games, scoring three TDs on 34 drives, with 17 3/outs and a -9 turnover ratio; they allowed 6,12 pts in their two wins, an average of 27 ppg in losses. In their last two games, with Green back at RB, Pack has outrushed their opponents 358-153, giving Favre some balance.

Saints (5-2) @ Bucs (2-5)-New Orleans going for first season sweep over Bucs since '02; in first meeting TY, New Orleans got outgained 406-314, but got punt return TD from Bush in fourth quarter to secure win, spoiling Gradkowski's first career start. Underdog is 4-0 vs. spread in Tampa home games, with last three decided by total of five points; they covered four of last five games, but averaged less than 4 yards/pass in each of last three. Bucs have no offensive TDs in last two games, gaining 196,174 total yards. This is first time Saints been on road in five weeks; they won two of first three on foreign soil.

Falcons (5-2) @ Lions (1-6)- Falcons allowed 30.7 ppg in last three games, won pair of shootouts (41-38/29-27) in last two, scoring eight TDs on last 24 drives and converting 15 of last 29 on third down. Detroit is 0-5 vs. spread when they allow more than 17 pts; they've lost field position battle in every game this year. Underdog is 3-0 vs. spread in Lion home games in '06. Atlanta (-3) outrushed Lions 256-75 on this field in Week 13 LY, beating Detroit 27-7, starting four of their 11 drives in Lion territory. Five of last six Detroit games went over total; Falcons are 3-0 if their game goes over total.

Dolphins (1-6) @ Bears (7-0)-Miami hasn't lost game by more than 11 points, but they're 0-4 on road, losing by 11,2,10,3 pts; not only is Miami 0-6-1 vs. spread in '06, they've only outscored opponent in two of 16 halves this season (2-12-2). Dolphins won both their visits to Windy City, but last one was in '91. Chicago won its four home games by average score of 38-8 (4-0 vs spread); they've +2 or better in turnovers every game but one (-4 in 24-23 win at Arizona), and outscored foes 131-32 in first half of games. In their last three games, Miami has minus-7 turnover ratio (2-9).

Vikings (4-3) @ 49ers (2-5)-Long trip west on short work week for Vikings, who lost last seven visits to Candlestick Point, in series where home side won last seven meetings. Minnesota averages just 5.7 ppg in first half of games, which is why they've led only one game at half, but they're facing Niner squad that allowed 89 pts in last two games, giving up 11 TDs on last 21 drives, with -7 turnover ratio. Vikings won two of three on road and have 15 sacks in last four games, but Niners are 2-0 if they don't lose turnover battle, so up to Tomlin's defense to create pressure, turnovers. Trap game for Minnesota.

Browns (2-5) @ Chargers (5-2)-San Diego is 3-0 at home, winning by 33,10,14 points, but are without star DE Merriman for next four weeks (steroids). San Diego offense has 13 TDs on last 31 drives, converted 24 of last 59 (40.7%) on third down and has outscored teams 74-27 in second half of last four games. In last three games, offensively-challenged Browns scored three TDs with 16 3/outs on 37 drives; they're 10 for last 42 on third down, and 1-3 vs. spread as underdog. Chargers won three of four series games, with Browns losing only previous visit here, 23-10 in '99. It is still less than two weeks since Browns fired offensive coordinator.

Broncos (5-2) @ Steelers (2-5)-Desperate time for fading Steeler squad facing team they beat in AFC title game LY (34-17); Denver is 5-3 in last eight visits to Steel City; they had five-game win streak snapped LW, but have still outscored last five opponents 50-9 in first half of games. Steeler defense allowed 98 yards on 49 plays LW in Oakland, but they still lost, since Raiders scored two defensive TDs. Pitt has lost field position battle in every game this year; they've allowed 71 points in last two games, and lost five of last six. Denver allowed 18,34 pts in their losses, a total of 26 in their wins.

Colts (7-0) @ Patriots (6-1)-Unbeaten Indy road dog second week in row, vs. Patriot squad that won six of last seven series games, taking nine of last ten played at this site (Colts won here 40-21 LY). Patriots scored 29.3 ppg in winning last four games, while allowing only two TDs on last 43 drives, holding last four foes under 14 points. Colts scored 34 last week at Denver squad that had allowed two TDs in six games; they scored 65 pts in second half of last three games. Expect Pats to run ball vs. Colt D that allowed four of seven foes to rush for 186+ yards. Six of last eight series totals were 51+.

                    Monday
Raiders (2-5) @ Seattle (4-3)-Oakland's defense has gotten lot better, allowing only two TDs on last 32 drives in wins over Cardinals, Steelers, while picking off six passes; add in 13-3 loss to Denver in last loss, and Raiders allowing just 11.7 ppg in last three games, so it is hot defense facing mobile QB Wallace, making second NFL start, first on home field. Seahawks allowed 32.2 ppg in last five games, yielding 18 TDs on last 56 drives, but they're 4-0 when giving up less than 31, and since Oakland gained total of 98 yards on 49 plays last week, hard to see them dropping 30 on Seattle.

                              Saturday's List of 13:

                              Football facts to feast on.......

                              13) The Patriots have started ten drives in enemy territory this season, and scored nine TDs and a FG, for 6.60 ppp. The league average on such drives ia 3.59 ppp.

                              12) Patriot opponents have started four drives in NE territory, with only a FG to show for it (0.75 ppp).

                              11) Patriots and Colts both posted 18 players on this week's injury report, in what appears to be a little under-the-surface gamesmanship by both sides.

                              10) Pinnaclesports.com has posted Dennis Green at even money to be first NFL coach fired. If you think no coaches will get fired before January 8, you can get 17-1 on that.

                              9) Another reason I don't like fantasy football that much; the RB with the most rushing yardage (Barber) hasn't scored a TD yet this season.

                              8) In their fourth game of season, Vikings allowed Buffalo to drive 68 yards for a TD; in their other six games, on first drive of second half, Viking opponents ran a total of 16 plays for minus-25 yards.

                              7) Big East teams are 26-7-1 vs. spread in non-conference games; ACC teams are 10-20.

                              6) Underdogs are 16-10-1 vs. spread (61.6%) in ACC games this season.

                              5) Home favorites in NFL divisional games are 11-15-2 vs. spread so far this season.

                              4) Home underdogs in divisional games are 8-4, making dogs 23-15-2 (60.5%) in divisional play, through eight weeks.

                              3) AFC West teams are 8-2-1 vs. the spread at home in non-divisional games, 3-6 on road.

                              2) NFC West teams are 0-9-1 vs. spread in non-conference road games, 6-3 at home.

                              1) If you take every non-divisional game played so far in NFL (74 games), underdogs are 44-28-2 (61.1%) against the spread. Overall, dogs are 67-43-4 (60.9%) in 2006.
