Dunkel Index - Pro Football (Sunday, Monday)

      Dunkel Index - NFL

      SUNDAY, OCTOBER 29

      Indianapolis at Denver
The Broncos have won five straight thanks to a defense that has allowed a league-low 44 points and just two touchdowns. That unit has had to be good to make up for an offense that has yet to score more than 17 points in a game. QB Jake Plummer has completed only 52 percent of his passes with seven INTs against four TDs. But while that's been good enough to get past the offensively-challenged Ravens, Raiders and Browns in the last three weeks, it could end up hurting the Broncos against Indianapolis this weekend. The Colts have had success in recent years scoring on the Denver D as they put 41 and 49 points on the board in successive playoff wins (2004-2005). And the Indy offense was clicking last weekend against the Redskins as Peyton Manning threw for 342 yards and four TDs in a 36-22 win. The Colts look poised to take advantage of a weak Denver offense and a three-point Vegas line according to Dunkel, which has Indianapolis favored straight up by 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Indianapolis (+3). Miners beat Tulsa 41-38 at home LY, even though Tulsa outrushed them 139-95 and converted 12-19 on third down. Boston College off big win at Florida State; they're 6-1 this year, but biggest win vs. I-0A opponent was 22-3 vs. Virginia Tech (they only beat Maine 22-0). Sandwich game for Eagles, who have Wake Forest next. Buffalo lost its last six games, allowing 42 peg; they're 3-1 vs. spread as road dog this year. BC is 7-3-1 vs. spread when giving 20+ pts.

North Carolina coach Bunting officially gone after last game, as UNC is 0-6 vs. D-I teams, outscored by average score of 35-11 in last five. Heels picked off one pass all season (-10 TO), now face overachieving Wake squad that is 6-1, but favored for just third time; they're 3-0 on road, winning by 11,24,2 points- they're 2-4 as road favorite in this decade.

Navy has lost 42 in row vs. Notre Dame, but covered 12 of last 16; with QB Hampton out for year, it'll be 43 in row here. Irish outgained Navy 505-314 LY- their last two road series wins were 30-23/27-9. Notre Dame off UCLA escape, where they ran ball for only 41 yards so would expect them to establish run early; they had last three foes under 100 rushing yards, with only one giveaway during that time (+3).

Home side covered seven of last nine NCState-Virginia games, with home side winning last three years, and Wolfpack losing last visit here 14-9 (-7). Cavaliers shut Carolina out last week and covered nine of last 11 as home dog, while State lost for fourth time in last six games- they're 0-2 on road (17-37 at Southern Miss/20-26 at Maryland). Dog is 4-2 SU in State's I-A games this season.

Struggling Florida State 2-3 in last five games, 5-7 in last dozen, dating back to last year, as some impatient alumni calling for coaching change; Seminoles are 15-1 in last 16 vs. Maryland, losing last visit here- they're 9-5 vs. spread in last 14 series games. Terps' last four games were decided by six or less pts, with Maryland winning three. Four last five Maryland games went over the total.

Cincinnati on short week after a Sunday night ESPN win; they split pair of games at Syracuse last two years (7-19/22-16), as they outrushed Orange 182-52 LY, fifth time dog covered in last six series games. Syracuse lost last three games, by 10,24,15 pts, but they're 7-1 vs. spread this season, even though four of their five losses are by 10+ points.

Northwestern lost last week after leading Michigan State 38-3 in second half; fat chance here vs Wolverine squad that covered four of last five series games, winning last three by scores of

Favorite is 8-3 vs spread in last 11 Illinois-Wisconsin games, as Badgers won last three games, 38-20/24-7/41-24. Wisonsin won and covered its last four games, with 21 points closest margin of victory (5-0-1 as favorite this year). Illini lost at Penn State last week because of turnovers; they outrushed Lions 207-40, but were just 13-33 passing, with four turnovers. Underdog covered the last six Illinois games.

Question for Michigan State is, do they channel the energy they got from huge comeback last week, or do they go back to being dysfunctional and lose to Indiana team that tries hard but is not a good team? Hoosiers are 4-4, but last two losses (52-17/44-3) show their lack of talent. Spartans covered seven of last nine in this series, winning last four games by average score of 41-15.

Bowling Green scored 70 points in each of last two games vs Temple (70-16/70-7) Temple covered at Northern Illinois last week, after trailing 40-0 in third quarter; they're so awful, hard to handicap them, but the Owls are 2-1-1 vs spread vs MAC teams (Temple joins the MAC next year). Six of their last seven Temple games went over. Bowling Green is 4-4, with no win by 13+ pts.

Vanderbilt covered once in last seven tries as road favorite, and are double digit favorite (0-2 since '99) vs Duke squad that lost 20-15 to depleted Miami last week (TY 373-334 Duke). Vandy is 3-5 after losing to South Carolina LW, which ended any hopes of going to bowl (would need to beat Florida or Tennessee). BYU whacked Air Force LY 62-41, running ball for 300 yds, and outgaining Falcons 683-479 for game. Miami won its last two games vs Ball State, 28-20/49-3, but this has been lousy year for Red Hawks (1-7, beating Buffalo 38-31) they're 0-2 vs spread sa favorite. Ball State lost four of last five games- they're 0-6 if they score less than 38 points, and failed to cover last three tries as underdog. Average total in this series has been 39, with visiting team covering five of last seven tilts.

Iowa State, Kansas State both backsliding; Cyclones won last two series games, 37-23/45-17, but Cyclones lost three games in row and five of last six, allowing 34.7 ppg in last three contests. Purdue lost three of last four games after 4-0 start. Faves are 5-2 vs spread in series, home side 6-3. Penn State is 1-2 on road, as they lost at Notre Dame (41-17), Ohio St (28-6) but beat Gophers in OT when Minnesota clanked PAT off the upright (28-27).

Not only has Minnesota lost its last four games vs I-A teams, it played I-AA North Dakota State LW and won 10-9 in game that saw Gophers outgained 381-249. Not good. Ohio State is rolling towards Nov 18 showdown with Michigan; their closest win TY was 24-7 at Texas- the last three weeks, they've won games by an average score of 39-6. Visitor covered 9 of last 11 in series.

Road team covered eight of last ten in series, but Auburn covered just four of last sixteen on carpet.

Road team covered last nine Tennessee-South Carolina games, with Volunteers winning last two visits to Columbia, 18-10,43-29. UNLV is 13 for last 49 on third down and -12 in turnovers their last four games; they were outscored 49-8 in second half of their last two games. Not good.

Nevada gained 560 yards last year in 48-24 win at New Mexico State, outrusing pass-happy Aggies 289-41; State covered just one of last ten as WAC road dog, and may not beat a I-A team this year until their hoop team takes court. But State can at least score now, scoring 30.3 ppg this season; problem is, their defense is so slow they don't stop anyone (allowed 41+ pts in three of last four games). Aggies are 0-2 on road this year, losing at UTEP (44-38) and Idaho (28-20). Nevada covered last five games, winning last four, by 18,10,28,16 pts; they're 3-0 as home favorite this season.

Memphis outrushed Marshall LY 243-57, beating them 26-3, but Tigers are in freefall, losing five games in a row (0-6 vs spread in last six) they've allowed 34.4 ppg in last five games- they're 1-4 vs spread as dog this year. Marshall ended four-game skid last week, winning at UAB; they're 0-1 vs spread as favorite. C-USA favorites are 11-7 vs spread in conference games this season.

Underdog covered ten of last thirteen Colorado St-New Mexico games; Lobos led last year's game 25-12 before falling apart in second half and losing 35-25, thanks to -4 turnover ratio. Rams got shut out last week, dropped to 3-3 vs I-A teams; five of their last six games stayed under total. Lobos scored 39,34 points in coming behind from 14-pt halftime deficits to win each of last two games.

Home side won last three Louisiana Tech-San Jose games, with Tech losing last visit here, 42-30; average total in last three tilts was 62.3- San Jose covered four of last five in series. Spartans are 3-0 at home vs I-A teams, winning by 1,21,7 points; they are 0-1 vs spread as favorite. Tech ended four-gamne skid last week and covered for first time TY; they're 0-4 on road, outscored by ridiculous margin of 201-38.

Kentucky covered 15 of last 22 games after bye, but they're 0-3 on road this season, losing by combined score of 134-35. Home team covered their last three games vs Miss State, won four of last five series games SU, with UK losing two of last three trips to Starkville (14-17/45-24/7-22). Bulldogs are 0-4 at home vs I-A teams, but they lost only 27-24 at Georgia last week, with five takeaways between hedges.

Central Florida upset Houston at home LY, 31-29, outrushing Cougars 220-138, but Knights lost five of last six games, and in last two games, allowed 511 rushing yards and 92 points. Coogs ended three-game skid with big second half vs UTEP last week; they're 5-3, so win here gets them closer to bowl. Five of seven Houston games went over total. UCF has only one takeaway in last four games. Houston is 3-1 vs spread as home favorite.

Toledo lost its last four games, by average score of 36-13; they are 1-3 vs spread as underdog this season, but have won and covered their last five games vs Akron. Zips are 2-3 in last five games, but are 1-4 on road, winning at NC State, 20-17 (+10). In four games as favorite this season, Akron is 2-2 vs spread. The former starting QB for Toledo came off bench to play LW, but Rockets still lost to previously-winless Eastern Michigan.

Road team won last two Miami-Georgia Tech games, with Tech winning 14-10 at Miami LY, outrushing 'canes 120-30, winning despite an 11-30 passing day by Ball. Jackets got smoked last week at Clemson, ending five-game win streak, while Miami was surviving suspension-riddled 20-15 win at Duke, when Devils had ball deep in Miami territory as game ended. Tech had seven sacks in last year's win. Miami covered five of last six as a dog.

Missouri allowed 180,262 rushing yards in last two games; their best defensive lineman broke his hip last week, so smallish Tiger DL could be in trouble vs Sooners, even with Peterson out- last week, Oklahoma outrushed Colorado 166-74, and Sooner D held Colorado to 113 total yards. Teams haven't met since '03, but the underdog is 4-1-1 vs spread in last six series games. Oklahoma is 0-2 away from Norman, losing to Oregon (34-33), Texas (28-10).

Kansas could easily be 8-0, but because of late-game screwups they're 3-5; they have two OT losses, and other losses by 3,10 (led 14-0 at half) and 1 (led 35-17 at half) point. In last three tilts, Jayhawks have been outscored 75-26 in second half. Colorado is 1-7, 0-3 on road, with losses by 1,15,21 points; they had 113 total yards vs Oklahoma LW. Neither side has any confidence.

Nebraksa played their hearts out in home loss to Texas a week ago, came up short after late fumble; they're 6-2 vs spread this year, 2-1 SU on road, losing at USC, beating Iowa State (28-14), Kansas State (21-3). Oklahoma State lost QB Reid to concussion last week; they're 1-3 in last four games, and trailed 14-0 at half in only game they won (42-32 at Kansas). Cowboys gave up lead to A&M last week with 0:02 left, lost on missed PAT in OT.

UCLA won 44-41 in OT at Pullman LY (TY 515-498) in game they trailed 28-14 at half; Wazzu outrushed them 329-154, so Cougars have this game circled on schedule; they won six of last seven games after home upset of Oregon LW. Bruins are 4-0 at home, 0-3 on road after near-miss at South Bend (TY 243-345); they've been outgained by 188,102 yards in backup QB Cowan's starts. Coogs' only losses are vs Auburn, Cal; is UCLA in that class?

Wyoming on roll behind lefty QB Sween, winning three games in row by 4,16,24 points, but they turned ball over seven times in LY's 28-14 home loss to TCU, in game where both sides had six sacks. Frogs are 0-2 in league; they scored 31 at Army LW, after scoring 12-17-7 in previous three games. Home teams 9-3 vs spread in Mountain West games this season, 5-2 if favored. Wyoming is 1-2 on road, with both losses in overtime.

Road team is 11-4-1 vs spread in East Carolina-Southern Miss series, with USM winning last five games by average score of 35-13, winning last two on this field 24-7/51-10. Eagles are 8-1-1 vs spread in series; they used +4 turnover ratio to win game in Greenville LY, 33-7 (-7.5). USM is 2-0 at home vs I-A teams this year, beating NC State (37-17), Houston (31-27). ECU is 6-1 vs spread this year (14-4 under Holtz); they're 0-2 on road; this is their first road game since 17-12 loss at UAB Sept. 9.

Hawai'i shut Idaho out LY, 24-0 in Moscow, outgaining Vandals 405-153; Idaho was 8-25/112 passing. Vandals much-improved under Erickson; they lost 42-26 at home to Boise in rvialry game LW (TY 397-353). Hawai'i off two mainland wins (68-37/49-30) at Fresno, NMexico St; they're 2-0 at home vs I-A teams, beating UNLV (42-13), Nevada (41-34). Idaho won its last two road tilts, beating Utah State, Louisiana Tech- only two teams to beat them by 20+ points this year were Pac-10 teams (OSU, Wazzu).

Florida International has lot of their guys suspended for Bama game (this is their first game since Miami brawl), so not worth it to handicap game. FIU was winless when all their guys played, with five losses by five or less points; even Miami game was at 14-0 before fight (ended 35-0). Should be walkover for the Tide.

Underdogs are 7-2 vs spread in Sun Belt games this year, 6-1 on road. North Texas' coach had heart attack recently; they lost last week at Arkansas State, 29-10 (outscored 19-0 in second half), have now lost four of last five games, all by 19+ points. Troy has weird schedule; they played four $$$ games in September, had week off, beat UL-Monroe 24-19 at home (-9), then had last week off, so are playing for only second time this month. Last year, Trojans upset North Texas 13-10 in Denton (+1.5).

Arkansas State won last four games, is atop standings in league despite -4 turnover rato for season; last year, ASU beat Florida Atlantic 3-0 in OT (first-ever OT game that had been 0-0), game where they outgained Owls 393-168. FAU banked $1.8M playing four $$$ games, all big losses; they're 1-1 in Sun Belt, losing 6-0 to ULL in TV game 10 days ago, after beating UL-Monroe 21-19. Again, dogs are 7-2 vs spread in Sun Belt games this season.

Average total in last seven ULLafayette-Middle Tennessee tilts is 64, but Cajuns has nine sacks in LY's 13-10 win at MTSU, in game ULL was 14-pt dog. Both teams hot right now, with MTSU 3-0 in Sun Belt (wins by 1,35,14 pts), ULL winning last four in a row (I-A wins by 19,3,6 pts). Cajuns played Wednesday night last week, so they've had three extra days to prepare for this.

Arkansas hammered Ole Miss LW, sixth win in row; they have a trip to South Carolina next week, so letdown likely vs Sun Belt foe they beat 44-15 LY (23-8 at half; TY, 440-327). ULMonroe has dropped six games in row, only one by more than 14 points (41-7 at Alabama). ULM forced 13 turnovers in last four games, still hasn't won any of them, not good. SEC home favorites 11-11 vs spread out of SEC. Sun Belt road dogs are 8-15 vs spread.

              Sunday's game
Rutgers on serious roll after 20-10 win at Pitt (TY 340-236); at 7-0 Knights have outside shot to play for national title. They won their two home games vs I-A foes (33-0/24-7); this is their first at home since Sept 23. UConn is horrible, losing three of last four games, with all three losses by 22+ points- they've completed half their passes once in last five games,a nd allowed 263 yards on ground LW, after Navy ran ball for 461 against them. ESPN's presence probably makes UConn try little harder in this one.

                      2006 Week 8 NFL

Oddity this week is that Houston-Tennessee contest is the only divisional contest out of 14 on schedule; NFL rooting hard for no Game 7 of World Series conflicting with Dallas-Carolina game.

Buccaneers (2-4) @ Giants (3-2)- Letdown alert for Giant squad flying high after Monday night win in Dallas; Big Blue outscored foes 122-46 in second half of games this season. Second road start for Gradkowski (2-1 SU, 3-0 vs. spread in first three starts)-Bucs upset Philly last week, but didn't score TD on offense, and averaged just 3.8/3.0 yds/pass in last two games. Tampa is 0-3 on road, losing by 27,11,3 points; they're 4-1 vs. spread as dog. NFC South squads are 10-3 vs. spread in non-division games, 7-1 as dogs, 3-1 on road. Average total in last six Buc-Giant games is 28. Giants are favored for just second time, despite 4-2 record.

Texans (2-4) @ Titans (1-5)- Tennessee won seven of eight series games, going 3-1 here, with wins by 7,21,3 points; they got first '06 win in last game before bye; they've started running ball better (408 yards/last two games). Houston won two of last three games, but they're 0-2 on road, losing 43-24/34-6 and haven't picked off pass since Week 1; they allowed 15,7 points in their two wins, gave up 32.8 ppg in losses. Texans had best defensive games LW, holding Jaguars to 220 total yards, but they're still ranked 30th on third down (49.4%), 31st in black zone defense (2.10 ppp) and forced five turnovers, least of anyone in NFL.

Jaguars (3-3) @ Eagles (4-3)-Philly's three losses are all on last play of game; their wins are by 14,14,14,22 points (2-1 at home). Jaguars lost three of last four games after 2-0 start; they're disturbing 0-3 on road, losing at Colts (21-14), Redskins (36-30ot) and Texans (27-7)- they allowed nine TDs in 34 drives on road (two in 35 at home). This is their first-ever visit to Philly; Jax won the two previous series meetings (38-21/28-25). Jaguars allowed 17-0-0 pts in their three wins, 21-36-27 in their losses. Eagles lead league in offensive TDs, with 24 in 82 drives. Their 21 pts last week was Philly's lowest output this season.

Falcons (4-2) @ Bengals (4-2)- NFC South teams are 10-3 against spread this season, 7-1 as dogs, 3-1 on road; Atlanta off three straight home games- they're 1-1 on road, beating Carolina in opener, losing at Saints in Superdome re-opener. Home side won last four Falcon-Bengal games, with Atlanta losing last four visits to this site, by 30-21-4-10 points (only win in '71). AFC North teams are 3-7 as favorites in non-division games, 3-4 at home. Bengal OL having problems; they scored 13-13-17 pts in last three games (four TDs on 34 drives), partially because they're not taking ball away as much (11 takeaways in first three games, three in last three). Falcons haven't had minus turnover game in '06.

49ers (2-4) @ Bears (6-0)-Chicago off bye after wild Monday night win in Week 6; home side won their last eight games vs. 49ers, with Niners losing last three visits to Windy City by 6,10,8 points, 49ers are 2-0 when they allow less than 34 pts, but it only happened in two of six games; they allowed 34-38-41-48 pts in losses, losing games by 7-14-41-29 pts. Alex Smith vs. Bear defense (allowed four TDs on 71 drives) seems like mismatch, but ballhawking S Brown now out for Chicago, which hurts the defense. Bears were +12 in turnovers first five games (17-5), but -2 at Arizona, as Cardinals showed blueprint on how to fluster Grossman. 49ers allowed 34,41 points in two road games.

Cardinals (1-6) @ Packers (2-4)-Arizona demoted their OC, and didn't take him to last game, but he still works for them; there's a coaching staff working together. Redbirds lost six of last eight games to Packers, dropping last seven visits to Wisconsin- their last win in Wisconsin was when Harry Truman was President ('49). Packers scored 20+ points in four of last five games, have five TDs on last 24 drives, as Favre develops rapport with new WRs. Second road start for Leinart (0-3 as starter); Arizona has been outscored 62-12 in second half of last four games; they're 0-3 on road, losing by 11,22,13 pts. Funny thing is, Arizona is 1-6 with defense that leads NFL in takeaways (17, 2.83/game). In the NFL, hard to lose when getting a lot of takeaways.

Seahawks (4-2) @ Chiefs (3-3)- Seneca Wallace makes first start for Seattle, in same park he made his Iowa State debut; he had tough outing vs Vikings LW, as Seattle was outscored 21-3 after Hasselbeck went out. Home side won seven of last nine series games, with Seattle losing 10 of last 11 visits to Arrowhead, but this is their first visit here since '01, when they used to visit here every season (former AFC West rivals). Chiefs scored 41-23-30 pts in wins, 10-6-7 in losses. In their last four games, Seattle allowed 30-37-28-31 pts. With Wallace under center, hawks will be hard pressed to match points if their defense doesn't step up and play better.

Ravens (4-2) @ Saints (5-1)-Baltimore lost last two games before bye, fired their OC Fassel, now seek to move on vs. Saint club that scored 25.5 in winning last two games and has covered five of six games in '06, winning all three home games (by 20,3,3 pts). AFC North teams are 2-6 vs. spread on road in non-divisional games, 2-3 as road dog, while NFC south teams are 10-3, 2-2 as home faves. Ravens have six TDs on last 44 drives; they've gone 3/out on 41.2% of drives (28th in NFL). Dogs are 5-1 vs. spread in Saint games TY, 4-2 in Raven games. All three Baltimore road games stayed under total, with Ravens 2-1, despite scoring only three TDs in 31 drives on foreign soil.

Jets (4-3) @ Browns (1-5)-Cleveland "fired" OC Carthon Monday, as Browns, in 72 drives this season, scored nine TDs and tried only five FGs, tied with Raiders for least amount of scoring chances in NFL, and Oakland is only team they've beaten in '06. Browns scored 17 or less pts in all five losses (7 TDs on 52 drives). Jets allowed 20_ pts in five of last six games, but they've scored 51 pts in winning last two games, and covered four of last five (13 TDs on last 50 drives). Cleveland is 0-3 at home, losing by 5,1,10 pts with all three games staying under. Jets won two of three on road, but lost 41-0 at Jacksonville on last road trip. Browns' -9 turnover ratio is 31st in NFL, behind Raiders.

Rams (4-2) @ Chargers (4-2)-St Louis off bye; in their four wins, they forced 14 turnovers (3.5/game); in their losses, they forced one in each, so they must rattle young QB Rivers. Chargers turned ball three times at Arrowhead LW, after having total of three giveaways in first five games. LB Merriman appealed steroids suspension, will play here, boosting Bolt defense that forced 3/outs on 43.1% of enemy drives, second only to Ravens in NFL. Rams scored 30.7 ppg in last three games, but takeaways masked defensive deficiencies that Seattle exposed before bye. NFC West teams are 0-5-1 vs. spread in non-division road games. AFC West home faves are 4-1 vs. spread vs. non-division foes.

Steelers (2-4) @ Raiders (1-5)- Not sure who Pitt QB will be as I type this, but Batch played well enough LW to indicate he will do solid job if called upon. Steelers ran ball for 143-219 yards in their wins, average of 79.8 in losses, so they must establish run, no matter who is under center. Oakland got first win LW, converting 13-20 on third down (they were 15-58 on 3rd down in five losses); they've run ball for 137+ yards in three of last four games, but their -13 turnover ratio is horrible- they even had five giveaways in last week's win. LW was first opponent Oakland held under 104 rushing yds; they've also given up 29 sacks in six games. Would expect Steeler fans to take over Coliseum. When was last time these two met, with both under .500?

Colts (6-0) @ Broncos (5-1)-Great matchup between unbeaten Indy (scored 91 pts in second half of last five games) and Denver defense that has given up two offensive TDs on 62 drives this year, both when team led 17-0. Only Indy win in five visits to Mile High City was when Vanderjagt nailed FG in snow to win night games, one of four Manning wins in six career games vs. Denver. Under is 6-0 in Bronco games, with 28 highest total they've had this year. Indy allowed 21+ points in four of six games; off thing is, in Week 8, this is Colts' first road game of year that wasn't in Jersey, and also first grass game of year, which may help Manning (harder to rush passer on slower surface). Average total in last five series games is 52.8.

Cowboys (3-3) @ Panthers (4-3)- Romo makes first NFL start on road vs. Panther club that won last two home games, allowing two TDs on 24 drives, but has sputtered in second half- they've been outscored in second half of every game this season (total of 82-42). All three Dallas games went over total, with Pokes losing two of three (17-24 at Jags, 24-38 at Eagles; beat Titans 45-14). Dallas is 0-2 vs. teams with winning record; they've split four games at Carolina, winning both regular season games, losing twice in playoffs. We have Owens-Smith-Keyshawn in national TV game, lot of egos involved, with both teams desperately needing wins to gain momentum for second half of season. Dallas traveling on short work week no picnic.

Patriots (5-1) @ Vikings (4-2)-Pats scored 11 TDs on 30 drives in last three games, have played good ball on road (3-0, wins at Jets 24-17, Bengals 38-13, Bills 28-6) but have showdown with Colts next week, after divisional game with Bills last week, so little bit of sandwich game for them, while Vikings will be primed for home Monday nighter. NFC North teams are 5-1 against spread in non-divisional home games. Vikings had only five TDs on 53 drives before their bye, but had three on 11 at Seattle LW, running ball for 175 yards behind former Seahawk Hutchinson. Belichick's defense has yet to allow more than 17 points; invest against him at your own risk.
