Dunkel Index - Pro Football (Write up)

        Pittsburgh at Atlanta

Concerns about Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers seem to have been erased after Pittsburgh's 45-7 trashing of Kansas City last weekend. Roethlisberger had by far his best performance of the season in completing 16-of-19 passes for 238 yards and two TDs. But unlike last year, this Pittsburgh team has yet to put together a solid performance on the road. In Week Two the Steelers were shut out by Jacksonville (9-0) and followed that up with a loss at San Diego (23-13). Bill Cowher's team now has to go on the road to face the Falcons, who are licking their wounds after squandering a lead en route to a 27-14 home loss to the Giants. Michael Vick had one of his worst performances as he was sacked seven times and fumbled four times. A week ago Atlanta would have probably been a consensus favorite in this game, but now finds itself a 2 1/2-point Vegas underdog. This looks like a good opportunity for a potential upset as Dunkel has the Falcons favored by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Atlanta (+2 1/2)

UConn is 3-3, with losses by 11,24,22 points. Navy had 461 rushing yds against Huskies, so Mountaineers should be able to do similar damage.

          ---------------------------------------------

          WHY WV SHOULD COVER

The West Virginia Mountaineers visited Mississippi State two weeks ago, opening as 28-point favorites, but with the pointspread dropping to 20 ½ by kickoff.

I interpreted the reduced spread as a lack of respect for both the Mountaineers and the Big East and listed reasons why they’d beat the Bulldogs by at least three touchdowns.

It wasn’t pretty, but they did it and I patted myself on the back without realizing how soon I’d have to stand up for the West Virginia boys again.

While the 22-point spread against the Connecticut Huskies likely won’t drop too much before kickoff, I`m still compelled to reiterate why WVU looks like a safe bet to cover another hefty spread tonight.

          A mismatch that matters

West Virginia has the best running game in the nation, featuring Heisman candidate Steve Slaton. The Mountaineers have topped 300 rushing yards in five of six games this season, topped by last week’s 457 yards against Syracuse. Quarterback Patrick White led the way with 247 yards and four touchdowns.

UConn struggles against the run, especially when a mobile quarterback is part of the equation. The Huskies allowed 464 yards on the ground to Navy three weeks ago when the Midshipmen had a healthy Brian Hampton.

West Virginia’s opponents knew that the run was coming, yet the Mountaineers couldn’t be stopped.

UConn knew Navy was coming with the run and still couldn’t stop it.

It’s a bad combination for Huskies backers.

          Passive attack

UConn head coach Randy Edsall says ball control is the key to beating the Mountaineers.

“You take a look at West Virginia and see how explosive they are,” Edsall tells The Charleston Gazette. “The best way you can try to not let them beat you is if they’re on the sideline.”

The Huskies rank ninth in the country with 209 rushing yards per game, hinting that they know how to eat up the clock. But there’s a hitch. They have to be winning for it to work.

UConn won the three games in which they built a first-quarter lead, pounding the ball (145 carries for 901 yards and eight touchdowns) for the rest of the game against hapless defenses.

The Huskies have lost each game in which they’ve fallen behind in the first quarter. They failed to pass their way out of deficits, allowing defenses to key in on the run (only 101 carries for 354 yards and only two majors in the three losses).

          That’s a big problem for Connecticut, because…

          West Virginia starts fast

The Thursday night game against Maryland in Week 3 is a good precedent, as the Mountaineers scored twice in the first five minutes and led a 28-0 after the first quarter.

“It’s a Friday night game with a national spotlight, and that’s rare in Storrs,” says Sportsmemo.com’s Rob Veno on the phone from Connecticut. “But any emotion that’s in the crowd will get taken away pretty quickly.”

A fast start by West Virginia means the Huskies will have to pass more often, likely the end of Edsall’s ball-control plans.

          UConn can’t pass

Sophomore D.J. Hernandez couldn’t build upon his effort against Louisville to close out 2005 and has been replaced behind center by senior Matt Bonislawski.

Combined, the pair has completed only 47.9 percent of their passes against Division I-A opponents. That leads to the Huskies topping out at 21 points in games with a line, despite not yet facing a ranked team.

The numbers get worse as the game progresses. The pair has completed only 16 of 43 passes in the fourth quarter, none of them for touchdowns. That makes a backdoor cover scenario even less likely.

“The quarterbacks haven’t been that accurate all year,” Veno says. “There’s been way too many three-and-outs. Making matters worse is that West Virginia has finally figured out how to pressure the quarterback.”

          Placekicker blues

The topper for the Huskies is that even if they advance deep into the red zone, there’s no guarantee of points. Edsall hasn’t decided on who will kick tonight, with three players fighting for the spot.

Matt Nuzie is the incumbent but has already missed two field goals from inside 30 and a pair of extra points. Graig Vicidomino went 0-3 against Army last week on field goal attempts. Combined, the pair are 1-5 from inside 35, giving Tony Ciaravino a shot at the job.

“You know those yellow uprights?” a frustrated Edsall asked The Connecticut Post. “Have you seen those things where it has a pole there, the crossbar? I just want the ball to go through the uprights.”

The total for tonight’s game has been set at 50 ½ points.

                    Minnesota at Anaheim

Minnesota has lost three of its last four in Anaheim, but comes into tonight's contest riding the best start in franchise history (6-0-0). The Wild have gotten consistent production from Marian Gaborik, who has record at least a point in five of the six games, and Pavol Demitra, who has assisted in every game. And Manny Fernandez has been solid in net (1.63 GAA). The combination make the Wild a solid underdog pick tonight according to Dunkel, which has Minnesota favored straight up by 1/2 a goal. Dunkel Pick: Minnesota (+1 1/2)
