The “Outplay Factor” has become a household term as subscribers have made this powerful team strength indicator a regular part of their handicapping routine. With 5-6 weeks in the books already, we figured this would be a good time to catch up with the current Outplay Factor ratings. We listed the teams in both college and pro in order according to their current rating. We’ve also taken this week’s full betting board and calculated the theoretical spreads based on the OF and compared them to the actual lines. As you’ll see, there are a number of encouraging discrepancies.
Before we get into the current ratings though, we’d like to reintroduce the Outplay Factor to all of our readers. The term “Outplay Factor” was coined after determining that the rating being calculated in the soon to follow formula essentially indicated how well a team was either outplaying or being outplayed by its opponents. In short, it involves four different key statistics
- Offensive Points per Game: Points scored by that team
- Opponents’ Defensive Average: The combined average defensive points per game allowed for all of that teams’ opponents for the season
- Defensive Points per Game: Points against that team
- Opponents’ Offensive Average: The combined average offensive points per game scored by all of that teams’ opponents for season
Keep in mind that this particular Outplay calculation simply involves scoring. Similar calculations can be made using Yards per Play, or Total Yards stats, etc. Using scoring sets up differentials very similar to spreads, therefore, the scoring statistics were chosen as the basis for our Outplay Factor calculation. Therefore, the following is the formula for determining the Outplay Factor. For each team, determine its:
Offensive Outplay Factor = Offensive Points per Game – Opponents’ Defensive Average
then its’
Defensive Outplay Factor = Defensive Points per Game – Opponents’ Offensive Average
and finally its’
Composite Outplay Factor (COF) = Offensive Outplay Factor (OOF) – Defensive Outplay Factor (DOF)
The key to the COF formula is in subtracting the DOF, as the lower the DOF, the better the defensive performance. In fact, the good defenses have a negative DOF calculation. Therefore, when subtracting this negative number, it actually adds positively to the overall rating.
Here are the current College Football Outplay Factor Ratings as of 10/10/06, listed in order from best to worst. You’ll see that the order closely resembles the national polls. Again, this rating can be an excellent team strength indicator. An interesting thing to note on these rankings is the low positions of teams like West Virginia and Notre Dame. Perhaps these teams are ripe for upsets in the very near future.
These are the current pro Outplay Factor rankings heading into week six. Again, note some of the unusual figures. Unbeaten Indianapolis ranks just 13th in the NFL, and Chicago’s 18.7 rating, if it were to hold up, would surpass the ’96 Green Bay Packers rating of 15.7 as the best in the last 15 years.
Using the Outplay Factor Ratings, we are able to come up with a theoretical spread in a game involving two teams, simply by comparing the teams’ individual ratings and crediting the hosts 4-points for home field advantage. For example, looking ahead to the huge season finale between Michigan and Ohio State, the host Buckeyes would be a 7.6–point favorite (30.2-26.6+4).
Using that logic, here are the theoretical Outplay Factor spreads vs. the actual for all 52 college and 13 pro games this weekend. The 4-point home-field edge is built into the home team’s rating:

Last year, they outrushed SU 172-18 in 15-7 win at Carrier Dome. Orange is 5-1 vs spread this year, losing games by 10,7ot,10 points. WVa is 3-1 vs spread as favorite this season, with I-A home wins by 32,21 points.
Road team is 10-3 vs spread in last 13 Purdue-Northwestern games, with Wildcats winning last two meetings (13-10/34-29). Home side won last four Rutgers-Navy games, but the Knights are on roll, winning all five games this season, running ball for 220.7 yards per game the last three contests, so they will try to run ball right at smallish Navy defense. Ohio State didn't cover last week for first time in 13 games, but Tressel is 3-0 vs spread when facing John L Smith (this might be last time the two face, considering Spartans' struggles). Ohio St won last three series games (33-23/32-19/35-24) blocking FG for TD to turn last year's game around and send Spartans reeling. Washington lost three of four vs Oregon State, but things are different this year; Beavers scored 14-13-6 points in losses this season (by 28-28-7). This is their first game on campus since opener vs Houston when they blew 27-14 halftime lead in 31-30 loss.
Louisville covered seven of its last eight games vs Cincinnati; last time Bearcats were here, they lost 70-7, then lost 46-22 to a Cardinal club that loves to run scores up. UC won its last two games to get to 3-3, but they're 0-2 on road, losing 37-7 at Ohio State, 29-13 at Virginia Tech (they led 10-5 at half). Baylor won last two games to get to 3-3, but they've been waxed often by Texas recently, losing last five meetings by an average score of 50-5. Longhorns gaiend 645 yards in 62-0 win in Waco last season (-29). Texas spanked rival Sooners last week; they are 6-1 vs spread the last seven years the week after facing OU. Texas goes to Nebraska next week, so a lookahead is possible, but Longhorns are 3-2 vs spread as a favorite this season.

Ball State at Central Michigan: -8 to -10 ½ (line history)
Central Michigan opened as an 8-point favorite on Sunday and, save a small fluctuation upward, remained around that number until Tuesday. The line moved to -9 on Tuesday and then moved as high as -11 on Wednesday before quickly dropping back down to -10 ½, where is currently sits.
“Central Michigan opened as an 8-point favorite and we saw two-way action early on,” says Simon Noble of Pinnaclesports.com. “Then early on Thursday, there was an influx of heavy volume on Central Michigan, some of which was sharp money. Right now Central Michigan has received double the plays of Ball State.”
Ohio State at Michigan State: +16 ½ to +14 (line history)
This line has been all over the place. OSU opened as a 16 ½-point favorite on Sunday and was quickly bet up to -17. Action on the MSU then drove the line down incrementally over the next four days all the way to -13 ½. The line has since moved back up to -14.
“The wise guys seem to be pulling for Michigan State with this one, but the public is balancing everything by betting big on Ohio State,” says a bookmaker at Bodog.com.
Adds Noble, “After receiving two-way action early on, slightly larger volume on the dog gradually drove the price down. Early Thursday, we started getting favorite money, which continued through the day and stabilized the line at -14. The sharps are at opposition on this one, playing both sides.”
UCLA at Oregon: -12 ½ to -8 (line history)
This line is on its way back up after a big move downward. Oregon opened at -12 ½, but was down to -10 ½ by the end of Sunday. The line continued to move down, hitting -8 on Thursday, before moving back up to -9 on Friday.
“Wise guys were indeed on UCLA early, however, the sharps are all over Oregon now and have actually moving the line back towards -9,” says the Bodog.com bookmaker.
Utah State at San Jose State: -13 ½ to -16 ½ (line history)
San Jose State was available below the two-touchdown mark on Sunday and for most of Monday before being bet up to -14. That number has only increased since then with SJSU hitting -16 on Thursday and -16 ½ on Friday.
“Early favorite money was mixed with some two-way action, which was followed by a wave of favorite money,” says Noble. “Another round of favorite money came in on Thursday morning and right now there are over three times as many plays on San Jose State.”
Nebraska at Kansas State: +13 ½ to +8 ½ (line history)
Nebraska opened as a 13 ½-point favorite on Sunday and the line has done nothing but move in favor of Kansas State since then. The line moved down to +11 ½ by the end of Sunday and dropped another point on Tuesday. A second big move came on Thursday when the line dropped another two points, making KSU an 8 ½-point underdog.
“This is another matchup that the wiseguys have been all over, causing the line to move a lot,” says the Bodog.com bookmaker. “Even though no injuries have been reported the wise guys continue to bet hard on Kansas State and seem to think the oddsmakers made a mistake setting this line.”
Florida at Auburn: - 2 ½ to +2 (line history)
The line moves for Saturday’s most anticipated matchup are as complex as trying to figure out who’s going to win this SEC battle. Auburn’s move from a 2 ½-point favorite to a 2-point underdog wasn’t as simple as sharp action, as Noble explains.
“We first opened this game with Auburn listed as 2 ½-point favorites,” he says. “Two-way action started this week followed by some Florida backers. Some semi-sharp Auburn cash was interspersed. There was heavy balanced action around the ‘pick’ price with a lot of point buying and selling.
“Yesterday saw heavier volume on the Gators, followed by more two-way money. While there are nearly twice as many plays on Florida, the sharper action for this game is on the Tigers at home.”
Mario Manningham (Michigan Wolverines) - Michigan will not have its leading receiver this weekend against Penn State. Manningham had arthroscopic knee surgery this week and may miss more than just the Penn State game.
Marshawn Lynch (California) - Cal`s starting running back is probable for this weekend’s game against Washington State. Lynch injured his ankle during last week’s game against Oregon and sat out most of the game.
DeShawn Wynn (Florida Gators) - Florida`s leading rusher and starting running back will play this weekend against Auburn. The back missed last week’s game against LSU.
Willie Tuitama (Arizona Wildcats) - Arizona`s starting quarterback will not play this weekend against Stanford. Tuitama suffered a concussion during last week’s game.
Matt Trannon and Kellen Davis (Michigan State Spartans) - Michigan State will not have two of their top receiving threats this weekend against Ohio State. Starting wideout Trannon and starting tight end Davis both will not play.
Chris Nickson (Vanderbilt Commodores) - Vanderbilt`s starting quarterback is questionable for this weekend’s game against Georgia. Nickson is banged up with an ankle and thigh injury.
Kerry Meier (Kansas Jayhawks) - Kansas will welcome the return of its starting quarterback this weekend against Oklahoma State. Meier hasn`t played since suffering a shoulder injury in mid-September.
Ryan Walters and J.J. Billingsley (Colorado Buffaloes) - Colorado may be without its two starting safeties this weekend against Texas Tech. Walters is questionable with a neck injury while Billingsley is not expected to play because of a knee injury.
Hakeem Nicks (North Carolina Tar Heels) - North Carolina`s starting receiver is listed as doubtful for this weekend’s game against South Florida. Nicks is bothered by a sprained ankle.
Selwyn Lymon (Purdue Boilermakers) - Purdue starting wideout, Lymon, is not expected to play this weekend against Northwestern. He was hit in the eye during a paintball game on Monday.
Justin Willis (Southern Methodist Mustangs) - SMU`s starting quarterback has been reinstated from a suspension that forced him to miss last weekend’s game. Willis is listed as questionable for this week’s game against Marshall.
