Smart move by the boss. Sweet Lou was not the answer to the Yanks playoff failures.

Pinella might not be the answer, but Joe doesn't seem to be either. For the last six years, especially the last two without Zimmer, you really have to question some of the X's and O's especially in the playoff's. There is no doubt over a 162 season he does a good job of keeping the ego's in check and dealing with the media for an overweight over age $200 M payroll team, but not so sure about the brillance of his managing.

With basically the same team coming back, with mostly un moveable bloated contracts, has he lost this team going into next year? Outside 1st base and 2 or 3 pitching slots (depending upon decisions on Mussina and Wright), this team will be the same, unless Cashman (who I don't think is a braintrust either) can make huge move like:

      - Move ARod (he really only has 4 years $66 million on his deal after Texas taking the rest) for young players
      - NOT resign Mussina unless it is at a huge discount
      - Move Melky for young pitchers, or eat some of Abreu contract and move him to play Melky
      - Get Johnson to retire
      - NOT resign Wright
      - Get a defensive 1st baseman
      - Sign a Zito type (AL proven pitcher, not NL retreads)
      - And a few others

Why would Mussina take a huge paycut? He's basically the #1 pitcher for this team.

        Johnson needs to retire
Wright needs to be canned as he sucks
        Giambi is at 1st
The main thing this team needs is more pitching in quality starters. You have Mussina, Wang and Lidle. Who knows if Wang will be good next season?

I think the organization has to stop giving 39 year old pitchers $19MM

I agree we need more pitching, but I think more youthful pitching is the answer, and not an NL retread like Pavano.

I don't think Torre is the problem;if you going to criticize him for the series against Detroit, then you have to praise him for holding the team together and winning AL East whe Matsui, Sheffield and Cano went down;has everyone forgot so soon the Boston Massacre?
With the obscene salaries Yankee players make, I don't think anyone can/could actually motivate them to perform better than they did.
Torre nor anyone else for that matter can get ARod to get a key hit or for that matter to have kept Tigers from getting key hits in the series.
Yankee demise is essentially what happened in Marlins series several seasons back-hungrier players for Marlins who were making a lot less money than Yankee players.
The failures of Yanks since 2000 are more an indication that there are simply too many high priced players to blend together into a motivated and cohesive unit;you know the old expression "Too many cooks spoil the broth." I am not sure any manager could do better.
ps I think in actuality Torre has been one of the top managers in the last 10 years.

Torre does need to go. They need a motivator.

Have you ever seen Torre's facial expression change? He is like a 70 year old zombie on the bench......he needs to be gone for someone w/ a pulse.

2nd of all, he couldnt have mishandled A-rod worse.......everyone knows Arod is fragil, so Torre goes to SI and rips his ass, then moves him to 6th for the postseason, then 8th???

Torre is lost and they need a fresh start in the Bronx.....6 straight years w/ no title, thats worse than Bobby Cox.

You know why george got pavano and contreras because the red sox. If Torre stays same results team hasn't played with fight in playoffs since 03 and even then Little let them in the W.S. with a bone head move leaving Pedro in. Same old yankees gotta luv it.
How many more titles will the Yankees try to buy it never ends.

Torre ripped A-Rod? I read the article and didn't get that impression at all. I didn't have a problem with anything that was said in the article and didn't think it was harsh at all. The only impression I came away with is that while I think Torre did a very good job this year, why does it take Giambi to come into his office and tell him to talk to A-Rod because he is killing the team with his perceived indifference during that brutal slump? Did Torre not realize this on his own? The other impression is that A-Rod is an egotistical idiot that is completely bent on his stats.

I will also ask why doesn't JEter get crap for this whole A-Rod thing? He was quick to defend Giambi when BALCO broke but has been mum on this subject for wayyyyy too long. As Captain, doesn't the lockerroom partially fall into his domain? Shouldn't he do something to help his teammate out even if he doesn't like him? Isn't that part of being a Captain?

And why do people bash Torre and not Cashman? Why is he getting away with this debacle? I will be the first to admit that I fell for 'Murders Row and Cano'...they looked great the last 6 weeks...but it was 6 weeks of playing mediocre teams and #4 and #5 starters that they don't face in the playoffs. This was a repeat of 2005 for Yankee fans...how many smacks to the head does a guy need to take before he realizes pitching, not hitting, wins championships?
