          Line Watch

San Diego at St. Louis – San Diego –101

Pulling the Padres out of an 0-2 hole is definitely a tall task for any pitcher. Except if you’re 6-foot-10 beanpole Chris Young.

San Diego’s budding ace will face the St. Louis Cardinals with his team’s back against the ropes on the road, a place were Young finds himself comfortable. The right-handed hurler has the National League’s lowest road ERA (2.41) and has held opponents` bats to a .176 average away from home.

"I don`t want to get too analytical about it, because I don`t want it to affect my mental state or anything when I`m at home vs. on the road,” Young says of his road statistics. “So, it`s just one of those things that has just sort of turned out that way over the course of time.”

Young credits his unorthodox fastball for most of his success this season. Already with an intimidating stature on the mound, Young’s release point, coupled with deceptive movement on his fastball has retired its share of frustrated batters this season.

The 27-year-old has gone 6-0 on the road this season and has not record a loss in his last 24 starts away from Petco Park. Young has been stellar in day games this season with a 2.22 ERA and a .141 BA against, bad news for the Cardinals with today’s first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m. EST.

New York at Detroit – New York –125

With Jaret Wright taking the mound for the reeling New York Yankees this afternoon, there may be more than the ALDS on the line for the right-handed pitcher.

Wright who is in the first year of a two-year contract will be playing for his job tonight when he faces the Detroit Tigers. The Yankees signed the 30-year-old pitcher with an option to buy out his final year on the contract. With the emergence of Chein-Ming Wang as the team’s top game winner, Wright’s future in New York is looking bleak.

"I love playing [in New York]," Wright told reporters. "It`s kind of like, how you feel inside is expressed by the fans. If you pitch bad, you feel bad inside [and fans boo]. I`ve never been to a place where 50,000 plus are so intense when they watch the games."

Wright will face a hostile crowd in Detroit tonight with the team’s playoff life in his hand. However, Wright has his share of postseason experience despite his young career. He has pitched in playoff games for the Braves in 2003 and 2004 and more notably with the Cleveland Indians in Game 7 of the 1997 World Series against the Florida Marlins.

“He was lights out then," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland who managed the Marlins in 1997. ``We`ll have our hands full and we know that.”

New York at Los Angeles – Los Angeles –135

Grizzled boxing manager Mickey said it best in Rocky.

          “Women weaken the legs!”

Mets starting pitcher Steve Trachsel could be weak in the wallet after having to leave the team to deal with a possible divorce from his wife Sarah. Trachsel has been away from the club for four days and hasn’t pitched in almost two weeks. His family has been constantly bothered by media, most recently by the New York Daily News, who phoned Trachsel’s wife at home.

New York manager Willie Randolph addressed the press about Trachsel’s situation this week, assuring doubters that the veteran righty would have his head on baseball and not the marital issues at home.

“I don’t think he’ll be scared, I don’t think he’ll be uncomfortable,” Randolph told the New York Times. “I think he’ll be fine as long as he executes his pitches, just like anyone else.”

Surprisingly, Trachsel is making the first playoff appearance of his 15-year career in the midst of this scandal. The 35-year-old will carry a heavy load during today’s game with the Mets rotation still in shambles after losing key starters Pedro Martinez and Orlando Hernandez. New York is still not sure who will take the mound for Game 4 if Trachsel fails to win today’s crucial contest.
