Tigers won seven of last nine Rogers starts, are 9-3 in his last 12 starts at Comerica; he didn't pitch vs Bronx this season. In last nine starts, he is 5-2, 2.65, but got roughed up by Toronto in his last outing. Johnson has had problems with back, is rumored to have herniated disk; he has 7.64 RA in his last three starts, last of which was 13 days ago. He beat Tigers twice this year, with a 6-4 win on August 31 (8 IP, 4 runs allowed).

Last nine times A's had game to clinch playoff series, they lost, so that is monkey on their back here. Haren was good pitcher all year, has playoff experience (Cardinals '04) but faded down the stretch, going 2-4, 6.33 in his last seven starts. His best start in that stretch was 1-0 gem at Metrodome Sept 13, when he threw 101 pitches in 8 innings- he also shut Twins out for six innings in 2-1 win June 3, and lost to them in April, 7-6. Radke is pitching with injured shoulder; he was other pitcher in the 7-6 win and 2-1 loss, both games Haren started. Radke made one start since Aug 23, but Twins did win 13 of his last 16 starts.

Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a fall Friday.....

          13) You know what I'd like to see? A bald guy get elected President, preferably not Howie Mandel.

          12) The NCAA's top four teams in scoring defense all play in the SEC.

          11) Falcons' kicker Morten Andersen is 15 months older than Falcons' head coach Jim Mora, Jr.

          10) Astros keep Phil Garner, but fire pitching coach; wasn't pitching the Astros' strength this season?

          9) Same for the Red Sox; they fire hitting coach Ron Jackson, like it is his fault team stupidly traded away Ramirez, Sanchez, Bard and Meredith. Lot of Red Sox fans live here in America's second-favorite city, and I never even heard the name Ron Jackson, for any reason, good or bad.

          8) Got car battery at Sears Automotive's "Battery Express" today; excellent service; in and out in forty minutes. Good stuff. Highly recommend it, especially if you're stupid about cars, like I am.

          7) Clippers are training in Russia, Spurs in France, Suns in Italy, while Utah Jazz goes to training camp in Boise. Hard to see why they don't get better free agents.

          6) By the way, the one place that should never host a training camp of any kind: Las Vegas. Just terrible idea. Sad to report that my hometown is deemed boring enough to host NFL's Giants every summer.

          5) The ACC basketball tournament is in St Pete next March. Why? What ACC team is within 150 miles of Tampa/St Pete? This decision is so poor, someone connected with the Devil Rays had to come up with it.

          4) Fresno State scared a great USC team last November, even leading in fourth quarter before losing 50-42, but counting that game, Bullldogs are 1-7 in their last eight games, losing their last three contests.

          3) Padres scored one run in their first two playoff games, as they made Jeff Weaver look good Thursday. Not exactly sure why Mike Piazza didn't play, but if he's going to be a Padre in 2007, they need to find position for young Bard, good hitter.

          2) I have the NHL package for free this week on DirecTV, now I'm tempted to buy the damn thing, but once college hoops is underway, I won't be watching much. Plus, with Sirius radio, you get audio of every NBA and NHL game, so thats good.

          1) Funny thing; if Twins win Friday, Game 4 of Twins-A's is 4:00 Saturday, on FX. Pretty soon, they'll be televising their games on C-SPAN3. FOX shows no respect for small markets. All they care about are the two New York teams. Would be a funny thing if neither one got to World Series, although Mets appear to be mortal lock for NL crown.

                          Minnesota at Oakland: Oakland -144

Nothing about playing on the road in Oakland will intimidate Brad Radke. Not when he has a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder and a baseball game to win.

The sheer guts of the 33-year-old right-hander will undoubtedly be the story of today’s game. In what’s expected to be the last game of his career if the Twins lose this series, Radke certainly isn’t worried about damaging an already mangled shoulder.

What he should be worried about is the A’s lineup. Oakland’s batters aren’t going intimidate anyone stepping up to the plate, Frank Thomas notwithstanding, but this is a team filled with smart, patient hitters; they’re extremely good at working counts and fouling off bad pitches. Even if they don’t produce hits, they’ll definitely wear you down.

Radke is already worn down, and while he’ll throw every pitch as if it’s his last, chances are one of those pitches actually will be – and bank on it coming sooner rather than later. That leaves a lot of innings for a Twins bullpen that was far and away the best in baseball during the regular season, but has struggled to handle Oakland’s bats late in each of the first two games.

Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire is struggling to create favorable matchups after his starter has left the game. The lights-out Joe Nathan is the only Twins reliever who hasn’t allowed a run in the series and the bullpen has allowed four runs in four innings overall.

New York at Detroit: New York –154

The New York Yankees have set the stage for one of the great postseason performances. Now, all Randy Johnson has to do is pitch, something he hasn’t done since September 23.

Johnson, who was diagnosed with a herniated disc in his lower back, has been in Detroit since Wednesday and has thrown in only two bullpen sessions since giving up five runs in his last three starts of the regular season. The 43-year-old received an epidural after his last appearance and has been resting for tonight’s Game 3 ever since.

"It all depends on Randy," catcher Jorge Posada told Newsday. Johnny Damon added, "I sure hope he`s all right. He hasn`t pitched in a while. I heard his bullpen session went well. But we have to win."

The 6-foot-10 left-hander has been impressive against the Tigers this season, going six shutout innings on May 29 and throwing a three-hit nine-inning performance in a 4-0 New York win on Aug. 31.

"He threw really well in the bullpen (Wednesday)," Yankees pitching coach Ron Guidry said. "As far as the problem he has, the back is always going to be stiff, but I think it`s something that he works through. And if he throws just like he threw in the bullpen, he should throw pretty well (Friday)."
