    THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5

    St. Louis at San Diego
Tony LaRussa looked to have made the right call in holding Chris Carpenter until Game One of the NLDS and Cardinal fans are hoping for the same good fortune in LaRussa's decision to go with Jeff Weaver today over Jeff Suppan. The decision was based in large part on Weaver's strong numbers on the road (4-1, 4.03). Weaver also put together a solid September by winning three of four decisions with the only loss coming 1-0 against Pittsburgh. He'll be facing David Wells, who has been at his best in the postseason (10-4, 3.15). But how effective the 43-year-old Wells will be after dealing with a bad ankle and a case of gout is a good question. With a win under their belt, the Cards look like another solid underdog play in this one according to Dunkel, which has St. Louis favored by 1. Dunkel Pick: St. Louis (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

Game 951-952: St. Louis at San Diego

Game 2: Detroit Tigers at New York Yankees (Yankees -217, 9 1/2)

Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers) - The Tigers need their AL Rookie of the Year candidate to come up big to avoid a potentially devastating 0-2 deficit in the series. Verlander skipped his last scheduled start to rest for the playoffs and is determined to be aggressive against the hot-hitting Yankees. In his only start against New York, the left-hander gave up six runs on seven hits to a lineup that lacked Derek Jeter, Hideki Matsui, Bobby Abreu and Gary Sheffield.

Mike Mussina (New York Yankees) - Mussina has a mixed postseason record. He has a 7-7 record in 21 playoff starts, but a respectable 3.30 ERA, and has infinitely more experience than his opponent. However, he has just one win in his last five Division Series starts and has a career 1-2 record with a 3.86 ERA against the Tigers at Yankee Stadium.

Game 2: St. Louis Cardinals at San Diego Padres (Padres -146, 8 1/2)

Jeff Weaver (St. Louis Cardinals) - Weaver brings an 0-2 record and 9.72 ERA from four playoff appearances into today`s game. He gets the call based on his road success where he is 4-1 with a 4.03 ERA this season, relative to his 1-3 and 6.52 ERA home record. Weaver has also had success against San Diego. He is 2-0 against today`s foe in the last two years with a 1.61 ERA.

David Wells (San Diego Padres) - Wells makes what could be the final start of his storied career, and he gets to go out against one of today`s most feared hitters. Wells seems focused on facing Albert Pujols in the heart of the Cardinals lineup and will put his playoff record on the line in his native San Diego. He is 10-4 with a 3.15 ERA in 26 career postseason appearances and plans to retire after this season. Don`t expect Boomer to hold anything back.

Game 2: Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Mets (Mets -150, 9)

Hong-Chih Kuo (Los Angeles Dodgers) - The Dodgers only want rookie Kuo (1-5, 4.22 ERA) to be himself in today`s matchup. The left-hander knows no fear, but will have his hands full against the hot-hitting Mets lineup. Kuo has experience against the Mets, despite making only his sixth career start today. He had his debut against New York on Sept. 9, a 5-0 L.A. victory and Kuo`s only win of the season.

Tom Glavine (New York Mets) - Just like the rest of the Mets rotation, Glavine had to fight through injury issues this season. A blood clot in his shoulder could have forced him to retire, but Glavine returned after two weeks and finished the season with a 15-7 record and a 3.82 ERA. He has won five straight starts against the Dodgers. He also pitches in the playoffs for the first time since losing two games to the Giants in 2002.

Detroit at New York: New York -225

The Detroit Tigers were literally and figuratively left out in the cold last night after Game 2 of their AL Division Series against the New York Yankees was postponed due to rain.

The Tigers are pointing fingers at the Yankees organization for withholding information on the weather, after believing that last night’s game would begin at 10 p.m. ET. Detroit players, including starting pitcher Justin Verlander, began warming up while their opponents sat comfortably in the team’s dugout.

"Definitely, they had information we didn`t," Verlander told The Detroit News. "We heard we were pretty close (to starting the game) and then we heard the game was canceled. I thought, `Do they know something I don’t?’”

Detroit was also forced to find last-minute shelter after checking out of its hotel yesterday afternoon, planning on traveling back home after the game. They were able to find rooms at the Hilton New York on Sixth Avenue late last night, leaving little downtime for players to prepare for today’s rescheduled game.

“I was ready to go today,” Verlander said last night, before predicting he would have trouble sleeping due to overexcitement. “And to have to get shut down, it’s definitely tough.”

St. Louis at San Diego: San Diego -146

The playoffs are not the time to start taking chances on players, but it seems the St. Louis Cardinals didn’t get the memo.

The Cardinals will send shaky right-hander Jeff Weaver to the bump today, despite his struggles this season. Weaver is 3-10 with a 6.29 ERA as a Cardinal since coming over from the Angels and is not known for his postseason success. In four playoff starts, Weaver has a massive ERA of 9.72 in only 8 1/3 innings pitched.

"Sometimes you get too wrapped up in results. Sometimes funny things happen," pitching coach Dave Duncan told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "What I tried to do with Weaver was evaluate the quality of his stuff."

Weaver’s stuff against the Padres has been less than stellar throughout his career. The 30-year-old has a 4-5 lifetime record versus San Diego with a 3.69 ERA.

Los Angeles at New York: Los Angeles +142

Like being stranded at sea or lost in the woods, the same rule applies to playoff baseball.

            Never use up your supplies.

It looks like New York Mets manger Willie Randolph skipped wilderness survival class after digging deep into his bullpen in Game 1 to squeak out a victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

New York pulled rookie starter John Maine in the fifth and proceeded to use five different relievers to secure a 6-5 win. Although this strategy paid off, it may leave aging starter Tom Glavine with little help for today’s Game 2.

Glavine, who suffered a blood clot late in the season, has not pitched deep into games this season. The 40-year-old averages just over six innings in his 32 starts and has pitched beyond the seventh only twice. The Mets have been forced to use an average of three relief pitchers in Glavine’s last 10 starts.
