One thing about totals in playoffs; teams' fifth starters are now in bullpen, and will be in quickly if the starter falters. I don't like playing totals in postseason games, because teams play more for one run than during regular season.
Twins are 17-0 at home with Santana this season, which is why they're favored in series; he beat the A's 2-1 in Oakland June 2, throwing 103 pitches. Overall, Minnesota is 27-4 in his last 31 starts.. A's are 11-4 in Zito's last fifteen starts; he beat the Twins 4-0 in Oakland June 1, tossing seven shutout innings. A's won ten of his last dozen road starts. Twins are 34-27 vs lefty starters Oakland is 23-18 when opposing a southpaw.
Cardinals started season 42-26 (June 18) but played terrible ball since then (41-52) limping into playoffs when Astros lost 3-1 on Sunday vs Smoltz in Atlanta. Thats over, though, St Louis is in, and Carpenter is their best pitcher (20-12 in his '06 starts). San Diego just beat Carpenter 7-5 a week ago- he threw 122 pitches losing 2-1 lead in 7th inning on Cameron opposite field double. Peavy is 3-0, 0.75 in last three Petco starts. Carpenter shut San Diego out for six innings in playoff win last year, as Peavy gave up eight runs in 4.1 IP. Cardinals swept series last year in three.
Detroit was never in danger of missing playoffs, but did lose out on division title, despite being in first place every day but on the last day. They face formidable Bronx lineup here; Rodriguez will bat 6th, which tells you how much power they have. Robertson is starting here, despite Tigers losing 12 of his last 18 starts, but he does have 2.95 RA in last six starts, one of which was tough 2-0 loss in Bronx on August 30- they also beat him 6-1 in May. Bronx won 20 of last 27 Wang starts; he was starter in 2-0 win vs Tigers August 30, but also gave up five runs in four IP at Detroit June 1.
