One thing about totals in playoffs; teams' fifth starters are now in bullpen, and will be in quickly if the starter falters. I don't like playing totals in postseason games, because teams play more for one run than during regular season.

Twins are 17-0 at home with Santana this season, which is why they're favored in series; he beat the A's 2-1 in Oakland June 2, throwing 103 pitches. Overall, Minnesota is 27-4 in his last 31 starts.. A's are 11-4 in Zito's last fifteen starts; he beat the Twins 4-0 in Oakland June 1, tossing seven shutout innings. A's won ten of his last dozen road starts. Twins are 34-27 vs lefty starters Oakland is 23-18 when opposing a southpaw.

Cardinals started season 42-26 (June 18) but played terrible ball since then (41-52) limping into playoffs when Astros lost 3-1 on Sunday vs Smoltz in Atlanta. Thats over, though, St Louis is in, and Carpenter is their best pitcher (20-12 in his '06 starts). San Diego just beat Carpenter 7-5 a week ago- he threw 122 pitches losing 2-1 lead in 7th inning on Cameron opposite field double. Peavy is 3-0, 0.75 in last three Petco starts. Carpenter shut San Diego out for six innings in playoff win last year, as Peavy gave up eight runs in 4.1 IP. Cardinals swept series last year in three.

Detroit was never in danger of missing playoffs, but did lose out on division title, despite being in first place every day but on the last day. They face formidable Bronx lineup here; Rodriguez will bat 6th, which tells you how much power they have. Robertson is starting here, despite Tigers losing 12 of his last 18 starts, but he does have 2.95 RA in last six starts, one of which was tough 2-0 loss in Bronx on August 30- they also beat him 6-1 in May. Bronx won 20 of last 27 Wang starts; he was starter in 2-0 win vs Tigers August 30, but also gave up five runs in four IP at Detroit June 1.

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...............

            13) A guy named Boone Pickens has given Oklahoma State a gift of $165 million to build a new sports complex. Much of $$ goes to buy surrounding houses, so land can be cleared for the new buildings. Not everyone is thrilled about selling their homes to build ballfields, but they're getting above-market $$ so most people are taking the money and scooting.

            12) If the Grizzlies lost $40M last year, why are people eager to buy them? Whoever buys them better keep Jerry West.

            11) Since 1990, only one team had best regular season record and won the World Series-- the '98 Bronx Bombers.

            10) Alex Rodriguez is batting sixth in the playoffs. Sixth. Only way Bronx loses in playoffs is if their pitching implodes.

            9) Rumors out of Chicago indicate Cubs want Lou Piniella as their manager. A fiery guy to replace an easygoing guy, but what Cubs really need are healthy pitchers.

            8) Back in 1945, Duke beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl; this week, Blue Devils are 29-point underdogs to a Crimson Tide squad coming off consecutive SEC losses, while Blue Devils have been shut out in three of four games. Could get ugly.

            7) How has Stanford not retired #7? I saw a kid wearing it in Cardinal's game at UCLA Saturday. You'd think they'd jump at the opportunity to honor John Elway. Go figure.

            6) When Matt Leinart starts Sunday, he becomes the 193rd NFL QB to start since Brett Favre made his first NFL start, 225 games ago. Favre banged his shoulder up late Monday night, as his career winds down to a painful end.

            5) Donovan McNabb has already hit on 24 passes of 20+ yds this season, the most by any NFL QB in his first four games since Dan Fouts in 1983. Guess they don't miss the old WR.

            4) Andy Reid has now lost his last eight replay challenges.

            3) Pretty fitting that game between Buffalo, Minnesota was refereed by guy named Winter.

            2) Best way for Eagle fans to torment Terrell Owens Sunday would be to shroud him in total silence. Owens is an attention addict; silence would drive him craz-- I mean, crazier.

            1) I'll tell you this; I bet Bill Parcells is lot more annoyed by Mike Vanderjagt's missed 26-yard FG than the TO garbage.

                  Tuesday's NCAAFB Game

Southern Mississippi won three in row since losing its opener at Florida; Eagles hammered NC State at home, 37-17 (total yardage 442-274) and hung on at Central Florida last Tuesday- they have covered only only two of last nine before a bye, but are 4-1 vs spread in last five vs Tulsa. Hurricane won at Navy in OT last time out, a strong win; their lone loss was 49-24 at BYU. Tulsa is 3-7 vs spread in last ten conference openers, 2-6-1 vs spread before a bye. Hurricane might be vulnerable to pass- their last two opponents tried only eleven throws each.

                    NCAAFB TV Games Tues.-Fri.

                    Tuesday, Oct. 3

                    Southern Mississippi at Tulsa (-6 ½), total 48 ½
                    7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2

Reigning C-USA champs, the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, commence their 2006 conference schedule with a home game against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, a team they beat 34-17 last year as 12-point underdogs when they visited Hattiesburg, MS.

Quarterback Paul Smith was the key in that game as he passed for 232 yards and a touchdown while successfully converting a trio of one-yard plunges to account for the bulk of Tulsa’s scoring.

Golden Hurricane, Golden Eagles… you want to know what’s really golden? Tulsa’s 12-4 record ATS since the start of 2005.

                    Wednesday, Oct. 2

Central Florida at Marshall (-3 ½), total 45
                    7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2

C-USA games on back-to-back nights for the Deuce, with the Wednesday tilt featuring the Central Florida Golden Knights (what, is everything golden in C-USA?), the team Tulsa beat to take the conference crown last year.

The Knights are fresh off back-to-back tough home losses when they likely needed at least a split to repeat their bowl-bound success from 2005. At least they managed to cover last week as 6-point dogs to Southern Miss.

The Marshall Thundering Herd are 0-3 ATS this year, but have faced some killer non-conference opponents and are anxious to make some noise in their conference debut.

                    Thursday, Oct. 5

Florida State at North Carolina State, (+10 ½), total 40
                    7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

Let’s all close our eyes and collectively wish we could turn the clock back to 2003, a season in which the Florida State Seminoles pulled out a 50-44 overtime win over the North Carolina State Wolfpack, making a mockery of the 54-point total as set by the books.

Didn’t work, did it? In any case, bettors shouldn’t expect similar fireworks this time around, especially when the Noles only put up 24 against Troy and the Pack only tallied 23 against Appalachian State.

Florida State hasn’t covered the spread in this annual meeting since 2000 and the Pack just scored an upset win at home over Boston College. Both teams had a bye week last weekend to prepare for the national stage. Here’s hoping they remember how to entertain.

                    Friday, Oct. 6

Louisville at Middle Tennessee State, (+33), total 52
                    8 p.m. ET, ESPN2

This Friday nighter takes place in Nashville and gives the Louisville Cardinals another chance to nationally prove that they’re more than the Brian Brohm and Michael Bush show.

Louisville’s faced some big spreads this year and covered them all. Giving away 33 points to the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders is nothing new – the Cards gave 40 to Temple and covered with 22 points to spare.

Louisville won’t be tested until its Nov. 2 meeting with West Virginia, so there’s little in the way of a look-ahead threat, and they also took a bye week last weekend. The Blue Raiders played last Saturday, a 35-0 road win against North Texas.

                      Dunkel Index – MLB

                      TUESDAY, OCTOBER 3

                      St. Louis at San Diego
Tony LaRussa rested Chris Carpenter instead of pitching him over the weekend and the gamble paid off as the Redbirds narrowly won the Central when Houston lost on Sunday. LaRussa's move reflects the fact that if St. Louis is to do anything in this year's postseason it will rely on Carpenter's right arm. But expectations are low as the Cardinals stumbled into the playoffs with the rest of the staff and bullpen in disarray. San Diego will counter today with its ace, Jake Peavy. Last year Peavy was hit hard by the Cards in the opening game and left with the score 8-0. But it was later revealed that Peavy was suffering from a cracked rib. This year he appears healthy, although his numbers (11-14, 4.09) are not very Peavy-like. Vegas has the Padres favored in this one, but Dunkel thinks the Cardinals are a dangerous underdog especially with Carpenter on the mound (as well as Pujols in the lineup) and has St. Louis favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: St. Louis (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

Game 901-902: St. Louis at San Diego
Dunkel Ratings: St. Louis (Carpenter) 16.037; San Diego (Peavy) 15.767
Dunkel Line: St. Louis by 1/2; 8

                      Vegas Line: Minnesota by 1 1/2; 7
Dunkel Pick: Oakland (+1 1/2); Under

Game 905-906: Detroit at NY Yankees

                        TUESDAY, OCTOBER 3

                        Southern Mississippi at Tulsa
Tulsa continues to make major strides under fourth-year head coach Steve Kragthorpe. Last year the Golden Hurricanes switched from the WAC to Conference USA and proceeded to win seven of their last eight, including the C-USA championship game. This year Tulsa has won three of its first four highlighted by a road win in its last game against a solid Navy team (24-23). The lone loss came at BYU (49-24), which demonstrated how good it is when the Cougars upended TCU on the road last week. Tonight Tulsa will look to continue its progress in front of a national TV audience as the Hurricanes host Southern Mississippi. This will be the second straight nationally televised road game for the Golden Eagles, who didn't look overpowering in beating Central Florida last week (19-14). They lost their only other road game badly at Florida (34-7), indicating that Jeff Bower's young team may not be completely comfortable on the road yet. With this in mind, the Vegas line favoring Tulsa by 5 looks reachable according to Dunkel, which has the Golden Hurricanes favored by 7 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Tulsa (-5).

Game 101-102: Southern Mississippi at Tulsa
Dunkel Ratings: Southern Mississippi 82.478; Tulsa 89.795
                        Dunkel Line: Tulsa by 7 1/2; 45 1/2
Vegas Line: Tulsa by 5; 47
