  • Pedro with Torn Rotator Cuff

This explains things a little more than the calf injuries did.

WASHINGTON -- New York Mets will be missing ace Pedro Martinez for more than just the postseason.

The Mets right-hander will have rotator cuff surgery next week and be out eight months. The injury is expected to sideline him until at least June.

Martinez, who turns 35 this month, was already out for the playoffs because of a torn tendon in his left calf. The Mets won the NL East and start the playoffs next week at home.

The Mets said it was not known when or how Martinez hurt himself. He went 9-8 during an injury-filled season that was slowed by ailments to his hip, right calf and toe.

Martinez lasted only 2 2/3 innings at Atlanta on Wednesday as he tried to recover from an injury to his right calf. An MRI exam the next day showed the problem with his other calf, and also revealed the trouble in his rotator cuff.

Martinez got a second opinion, which concurred with the Mets' reading.

Mets general manager Omar Minaya said he spoke to Martinez. Asked whether the pitcher was considering retirement, Minaya said, "Absolutely not."

Minus the three-time Cy Young winner, the Mets will have Orlando Hernandez pitch Game 1 and Tom Glavine start Game 2. It has not yet been determined which team the Mets will play in the first round, or the date of the opener.

Steve Trachsel and John Maine also could start later for the Mets in the best-of-five round.

Maybe he'll come back stronger and get a little of the velocity he's lost in recent years back.

Hmmmm.....I hope so, but at his age, that's not an injury that you come back from very easily.

IF there is any silver lining in this, and I don't think there is, in case Omar had any thoughts that he did not need to pick up a #1 in the off season thinking he could get a #2 and/or #3 to supplement Glavine and Pedro, this should seal that deal that a #1 is dire.

It's a stretch but who knows....

RM, how are you feelin'? Mets could be a nice wager in the playoffs as I am sure public opnion wil be against them.

I don't think for a second that it was bad signing. I think Omar was hoping to get three good years out of him and didn't get two. But it absolutely gave them instant credibility and I doubt guys like Delgado would be a Met right now if they didn't go get him.

Regardless of what Pedro contributes for the rest of his contract, he turned this team around just by signing here. I doubt Beltran would be here if it weren't for Pedro and they may never have made the deal for Delgado.

He did for them now what Piazza did for them in the late 90s.

Feeling okay. In a decent amount of pain. The vicodin helps, but my stomach isn't all that happy about it.

Believe it or not, i'm worried about SD more than any other team in the NL. I'm not sure why, but I see them giving the Mets problems.

I would agree on SD...Houston scared me more but SD would be next in line. Can't wait to see Mota face Piazza...should be fun.
