Cincinnati at Florida – Marlins -125

The long season is catching up with the Cincinnati Reds.

Take youngsters Brandon Phillips and Edwin Encarnacion for example. Both are battling injuries and fatigue and as a result they are hitting well below their season averages during September.

“I think they may be worn down,” manager Jerry Narron told mlb.com.

But it’s not just Phillips and Encarnacion who are hitting the late-season wall. The entire team has been slumping, averaging only 3.4 runs in 24 games this month. Not surprisingly, the Reds have won only 11 of the 24 games and five of their last 10 despite chasing the NL wild card spot.

New York at Atlanta – Braves +108

The atmosphere around the New York Mets is surprisingly funereal these days for a team going into the postseason as the best team in the National League.

First, the team is coming to grips with the realization ace Pedro Martinez isn’t 100 hundred percent. This was apparent after the Pedro gave up seven runs in only 2 2/3 innings of a 13-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves Wednesday night.

“Obviously, I`m not 100 percent,” Martinez told the Newark Star Ledger. “I`m not comfortable and I`m not getting better quickly. ... But I`m going to continue to be patient and give the team what I have. Thank God, this is still the regular season.”

Secondly, the Mets have hit a severe hitting slump; a slump that has seen them hit just .250, average just 3.1 runs and win only three of their last 10 games. This sag includes New York’s last two games versus Atlanta in which the team has managed just one run in back-to-back blowout losses.

        Oakland at Anaheim – A’s +117

Oakland A’s manager Ken Macha thought Barry Zito could use a little extra rest so he gave him some.

So that’s why the A’s ace scheduled start Wednesday night versus Seattle was pushed back one day and now Zito will start tonight versus the Anaheim Angels.

That’s not good news for an Angels squad that has not scored more than three runs in three games versus Zito this season. This includes a 5-4 Oakland win last Friday in which Zito struck out six and gave up only seven hits in 7 2/3 innings of work.
