Wednesday's List of 13: Baseball awards edition.........

As the baseball season winds down this week, here are some postseason awards I came up with, tongue planted firmly in cheek…….

        13) The "Good things happen to good people award" goes to Jason Kendall, gritty leader of the A's. Kendall has played lot of his career on bad teams, but finally gets to play baseball in October, when the brightest lights are on.

        12) The "Maybe we're not as smart as we think we are" award goes to…...........the Red Sox, who traded away Sanchez, Bard, Meredith and Ramirez, and still missed playoffs by a double digit margin. Nicely done. Have a great future.

        11) The "Who are these guys award?" goes to…..the Tigers, who were an afterthought in March, but made the playoffs with relative ease.

        10) The "Thanks, but no thanks" award goes to……..Joe Girardi, who took team with a $15 million payroll and made them contenders, but alienated so many people along the way that he probably won't get invited back for a second season in Miami.

        9) The "I didn't mean to wear the slinky red dress to the team Christmas party" award goes to…..Kris and Anna Benson, who got themselves traded off a playoff team and sent to Baltimore, thanks in large part to Mrs Benson's running her mouth last winter.

        8) The "Why doesn't the trainer ever get fired?" award goes to……Dusty Baker, whose Cubs lost Kerry Wood and Mark Prior for most of season to injuries, rendering their pitching staff helpless.

        7) The "Does anyone here know what they're doing award?" goes to the Devil Rays, who let Delmon Young start season in the minors, with sub umpires, when they had slugs in both center and right field (Baldelli was injured first two months) and knowing that Young has had anger management issues with minor league umps in his past. Young came up Sept 1st and hit over .300 in his big league debut.

        6) The "I didn't go to Harvard, but I'm smarter than that guy" award, goes to Dodger GM Ned Colletti, who retooled the Dodgers, made them younger, then watched them contend all summer. Dodgers set their all-time home attendance record this season.

        5) The "I have seen the enemy, and it is us" award goes to Toronto manager John Gibbons, who challenged at least two of his own players to fights during a season where they won more games than they lost.

        4) The "Best manager no one knows" award, as usual, goes to Padre skipper Bruce Bochy. San Diego regularly plays well on the road, a sign of good leadership. Bochy has been in San Diego for long time, and if Padres are smart, they'll keep him there.

        3) The "Reports of his demise are greatly exaggerated" award goes to…..Frank Thomas, who carried the A's through July and August, as he makes a stretch run at Cooperstown in the twilight of his career.

        2) The "No matter how hard I try, I keep sinking" award, goes to Cincinnati GM Wayne Krivsky, who tried every washed-up pitcher short of Sam Malone this summer, only to see the Reds fall out of wild card contention. Not due to any lack of effort, though.

        1) The "We continue to thrive in spite of ourselves" award goes to…the nitwits who run major league baseball. The All-Star Game counting is stupid, no salary cap/salary floor is worse, and having foreigners not go through the entry draft is plain corrupt. But people keep pouring through turnstiles in big cities, so no one bats an eyelash. Go figure.

          Baltimore at NY Yankees
A solid pitching matchup tonight in the Bronx as Baltimore's Kris Benson takes on Chien-Ming Wang. HOT

Josh Beckett Boston Red Sox - Along with Big Papi, Beckett is one of the few bright spots for the Red Sox right now. With Boston out of playoff contention and delegated to a battle for second place in the AL East with the Blue Jays. Beckett has continued to shine going 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA in his last three starts. The Red Sox are –237 favorites against the Devil Rays tonight.

Adam Eaton (Texas Rangers) - Despite an unspectacular 4.56 ERA in his last five starts, Eaton is unbeaten during those games going 4-0. Since being activated from the DL in late July, Eaton hasn’t pitched late into games. He has gone past the sixth inning just once this year but is 7-4 with a 4.80 ERA. Oddsmakers have not yet released a line on the Rangers’ matchup with the L.A. Angels tonight.

Chris Young (San Diego Padres) - Young has been almost untouchable recently, allowing just two hits over his last two trips to the mound and just four hits in his last three contests. He received the decision in just one of those games however. In his last outing he took a no-hitter into the ninth inning. The Padres are –114 road faves in St. Louis tonight.

            COLD

Pedro Martinez (New York Mets) - If Pedro continues to throw like he is lately, in the playoffs, the Mets could be in trouble. Since returning from a one-month layoff because of a calf injury, Martinez has lost two straight starts. In those games he gave up seven earned runs and didn’t make it out of the fifth inning in either outing. New York is a –109 road dog against the Atlanta Braves tonight.

Tim Corcoran (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) - Corcoran has been downright awful over the past 2 1/2 months. Since winning his first four games, he is 0-9 with an awful 5.98 ERA in 12 starts. Over those 12 outings the Devil Rays came away with the win just once. Corcoran will be in tough tonight as Tampa Bay is a +219 underdog against Josh Beckett and the Red Sox.

            Other notables:

Tim Hudson (Atlanta Braves) - Hudson is 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA in his last three outings.

Nate Robertson (Detroit Tigers) - Robertson hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any of his last five starts.

Cincinnati at Florida – Cincinnati +149

While the Florida Marlins’ fairy tale playoff drive ended last night, the Cincinnati Reds inched one game closer to capturing the NL Central title.

The Reds currently sit 2 ½ games back of the slumping St. Louis Cardinals, having made up four games in five days thanks to St. Louis’ seven-game losing streak.

"We`re battling and trying to stay alive," manager Jerry Nerron told MLB.com. "We`re doing everything we can, playing everybody we have."

Cincinnati plays Game 2 of their series with a young Marlins team tonight. Florida will have trouble finding motivation in the final week of the schedule after a long up-and-down season that proved all the baseball pundits wrong.

"It was a hard day,"manager Joe Girardi told the Miami Herald. “Even when the odds were bad I still believed that we always had a shot. It hurts.``

Los Angeles at Colorado – Colorado +107

Maybe it is the thin air or the alleged tampering of the baseballs. Whatever it is about Coors Field, Derek Lowe does not like it.

Lowe, who has been the Dodgers most dominate pitcher since July (8-1 record, 2.42 ERA in that span) has a 6.17 ERA in his two starts in Colorado this season while splitting in those games.

"The outfield here is so big. Look at it. They go from first to third on every single. They score from second on every hit,” Lowe told reporters. “Any line drive to the gap is a triple, because the walls are so far back. It`s a tough place to pitch for a lot of reasons, and the breaking balls don`t break as consistently because of the air."

Lowe said he is focusing on out-dueling his opposition, Aaron Cook, and does not concern himself with the numbers at Coors Field. The right-hander is aware of the Rockies success at home, with Colorado going 44-35 at Coors this season and winning five of its last eight home games.

Oakland at Seattle – Seattle -190

As you are reading this article, Barry Zito is probably rolling out of bed from a long night of partying after the Oakland Athletics clinched the AL West title.

Zito, who was scheduled to pitch today, had his start pushed back early Wednesday morning. Oakland will send rookie Jason Windsor to the bump instead, allowing the veteran lefty an extra day to recover.

Zito and the A’s celebrated their first playoff birth since 2003 by busting into what MLB.com is reporting as "a jig you might find in a teen hip-hop flick". While his teammates formed a circle around the veteran lefty and chanted "Go Zito. Go Zito," the A`s ace danced while the crowd of Athletics soaked him champagne.

Windsor has made two starts for Oakland this season, going 0-1 with 5.19 ERA.
