My first post here guys, be gentle. Here is my write up I posted in another forum, thought I'd share here.
Southern Miss (-5) @ Central Florida
Tuesday Sept. 26th 7:30PM EST
Let's hear your thoughts on this one guys.
(This is my first attempt at a write up, so please bare with me)
My Thoughts: I really think this line should be double digits. Southern Miss (2-1) is coming off a 20 point win at home against NC State, a team that beat Boston College this past weekend. Central Florida (1-2) is coming off a 7 point home loss to South Florida in their last game 10 days ago. These teams do have one common opponent already in this young season, both teams playing against the Florida Gators in the swamp. While both teams lost to the perinial powerhouse Gators by large margins, if you look deeper into the numbers, a much different story is revealed. Here is a small comparison of those two games:
Central Florida - 0
Florida - 42
This is a game in which Florida led 34-0 at the half. Florida took out most of their starters (including QB Leak) mid way through the 3rd quarter and coasted to a 42-0 win. Here are some telling stats from the game:
Total Net Yards - CF 154 FLA 636
Net Rushing Yards - CF 35 FLA 203
Net Passing Yards - CF 118 FLA 443
Note: CF did not turn the ball over, FLA had 20 penalties and this game was still 42-0.
Now lets look at Southern Miss @ Florida
Southern Miss - 7
Florida - 34
This game was 14-7 at the half, and Southern Miss was very much in it. Leak & co. played the whole way for the Gators. The problem for SM in this one was the turnovers. Southern Miss QB Jeremy Young threw 3 INT's (two in 3rd Q) and gave the Gators good field position the entire 2nd half. Here are some stats from the game:
Total Net Yards - SM 296 FLA 374
Net Rushing Yards - SM 120 FLA 136
Net Passing Yards - CF 176 FLA 238
As mentioned SM had 3 turnovers which ruined their chances at making this one as respectable as the stats indicate. Penalties were fairly even at 16-14. SM sacked Leak 2 times and intercepted him once.
As you can see, while the final scores are similar, the final stats tell a different story. Also, since their opening game @ Florida, Southern Miss QB Jeremy Young hasn't thrown an INT.
Season Stat Rankings (Nationwide)

SM Rush Offense- 13th 212 YPG 5.2 YPC 8 TD

Please comment, I'd like to hear your opinions. Good Luck!
