Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...................
    13) Now that Twins and Tigers are both in playoffs, how hard do they try to win thei division? Is it more important to have your pitching rotation set, or more important to avoid the evil Bronx Bombers in the first round?

    12) Miami Hurricanes are out of top 25 for first time in last 108 polling weeks. Rutgers is in the Top 25, even more surprising.

    11) Tyrone Willingham and Charlie Weis were both 11-3 first 14 games they coached at Notre Dame. Weis got a ten-year contract (winning with the players Willingham recruited), yet Willingham got the boot. Go figure.

    10) Bear Bryant's last national title came when his Alabama team beat Arkansas 24-9 in the Sugar Bowl following the '79 season. Bama had a cheerleader that year named Sarah, who is the mother of current Tide quarterback John Parker Wilson.

    9) Of the 32 starting QBs in the NFL, only Charley Frye of the Browns earns less money than Minnesota's Brad Johnson.

    8) Grady Sizemore has the most extra base hits of any leadoff hitter since 1957.

    7) Carolina Panthers have been outscored 29-12 in second half of games this season.

    6) Tampa Bay has been outscored 51-10 in first half of games.

    5) Field position has been big help for Jacksonville this year; in their three games, they've had advantage in starting field position of 9,17 and 8 yards, all pretty good edges.

    4) Had to like Bengals going for TD passes on first play after Steeler turnovers Sunday; too many teams are cautious- the Bengals have a go-for-the-jugular mentality, and it helps.

    3) Mike Shanahan was 43-16 when Elway started for him, is 34-12 when Jake Plummer starts for him, and 55-52 when any other quarterback has started for him.

    2) It was pointed out on cnnsi.com today that Dan Marino took 75 games to reach 20,000 passing yards in his career, while Kurt Warner took 76 games to reach same mark, and we know which one of the two won a Super Bowl.

    1) Did Tom Benson really turn down $1 billion from Canadian group to sell the Saints? If he did, wow, what promise did he get from the NFL to turn that down?

Central Florida has come long way from 0-11 two years ago, but they lost 52-31 at Southern Miss last year (+8) as Knights were -4 in turnovers and ran ball for only 96 yards. UCF has senior QB in Moffett, but he had tough time in Knights' home loss to South Florida ten days ago. Southern Miss beat NC State easily in its last game, outrushing Wolfpack 261-77; they've covered nine of last twelve C-USA road games. UCF has seven TO's in last two games. Both these teams got crushed by Florida, UCF losing 42-0, Southern Miss 34-7.

Woody Williams (San Diego) - Williams faces his former team tonight in the middle of his hot streak. He’s been outstanding in September, winning his last three with an ERA of 1.20. He’s a big moneymaker too, earning backers 8.46 units this season.

Dontrelle Willis (Florida) - Willis is 3-0 in his last few starts with an ERA of 2.55. In his last start against the Mets, Willis pitched eight innings and let up three runs. In his last three games Willis has only allowed 19 hits.

                      LINE WATCH

Chicago White Sox at Cleveland – Cleveland -140

                      Embarrassed or humiliated.

Either adjective could aptly describe how the Chicago White Sox are feeling following a 14-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians that, coupled with the Minnesota Twins’ 8-1 win over the Kansas City Royals, eliminated Chicago from playoff contention.

“I`m embarrassed for myself because going out there and doing that is hard to do even if you`re throwing fastballs down the middle,” said starting pitcher Jon Garland, who gave up 12 runs in 5 1/3 innings. “It looked like we came out unprepared, and I was the leader of the pack.”

However, bettors shouldn’t expect much better today. The White Sox throw Javier Vazquez on the mound, a pitcher that has not won in his last eight starts with a 5-2 loss to C.C. Sabathia and the Indians Sept. 10 as a –107 favorite counted in the streak.

Texas at Anaheim – Angels -145

                      Two of three.

That’s how many games the Anaheim Angels are hoping the Seattle Mariners can take from the AL West-leading Oakland A’s. If they do, the Halos still have a shot at overtaking the Athletics for the AL West crown when they open a four-game set against them this weekend.

“The end isn`t here yet,” outfielder Chone Figgins told the Los Angeles Times, “so we`re going to keep fighting.”

But this also means the Angels must first take care of their own business and beat the Texas Rangers Tuesday.

Judging by his recent form, Anaheim should feel pretty confident with pitcher Kelvim Escobar taking the hill. Over his last three starts, the 30-year old is 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA including a one-run, two-hit performance in Anaheim’s 2-1 win over Texas two weeks ago.

Arizona at San Francisco – Diamondbacks -128

Steve Finley always knew Arizona Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb was going to be a special pitcher.

“We all said that with the sinker he`s got, he could throw it nine of 10 pitches and sometimes more than that and shut the best lineups out,” the former Diamondback told mlb.com. “The more he matures, the better he`s going to get, and that seems to be the case.”

Unfortunately for Finley he was right and as an opposing batter he has struggled, going just 2-for-13 versus the Arizona righty. Webb is 16-7 with a 2.95 ERA and has tossed two complete games in his last three starts.

                          TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26

                          LA Dodgers at Colorado
A couple of teams well-positioned to play the role of the spoiler and probably none more so than Colorado. The Rockies open a series tonight against the Dodgers having won 10 of their last 12 at Coors Field. Meanwhile L.A., which got some late-inning heroics in their recent home series, have dropped 10 of their last 16 away from Dodger Stadium. Dodger starter Greg Maddux has also struggled in September, going just 1-3 with a 4.76 ERA, while Colorado's Jason Jennings has been respectable at home (5-4, 3.28).. The Rockies look like a solid underdog play in this one according to Dunkel, which has Colorado favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: Colorado (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                              TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26

                              Southern Mississippi at Central Florida
Central Florida came into this season with raised expectations after George O'Leary led the moribund Golden Knights to their first-ever bowl appearance in 2005. But thus far UCF has struggled to meet those expectations after getting blanked by Florida (42-0) and losing at home to South Florida (24-17). The problems have stemmed from a lack of strong play from senior QB Steven Moffett (2 INTs vs. USF) and a defense that has given up 82 points in its first three games. That problem could continue tonight against Southern Miss, which ran through N.C. State for 291 yards and 37 points in its last game. QB Jeremy Young (13-of-19) and RB Damien Fletcher (182 yards, 3 TDs) controlled a Wolf Pack defense that held Boston College to just 15 points this past weekend. The USM offense had success in last year's game in a 52-31 win at home. While it will be tougher on the road, Southern Miss looks to have enough right now to cover the Vegas line of 5 according to Dunkel, which has the Golden Eagles favored by 7 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Southern Miss (-5).
