Falcons (2-0) @ Saints (2-0)- Superdome re-opens with the Saints facing archrival Falcons who lost last two visits here; three of last five series games were decided by FG. Saints have never opened season with two road wins before, so Brees/Bush era off to flying start, scoring 26.5 ppg, converting 15-33 on third down (45.5%). Atlanta 2-0 after wins at Carolina, vs Bucs; they've run ball for third-highest total ever after three games (558 yds) so Saint run defense that held first two foes to 74 ypg will be tested again. Five of last six series totals were 43+. Vick's cousin Aaron Brooks was dumped by Saints last winter.

                        Hot streaks

Tom Glavine (New York Mets) - Ranking second on the 2006 money list, Glavine shouldn`t be a mystery to bettors. He`s heating up again after some midsummer Mets letdowns and has posted two wins in three quality starts coming into today`s matchup against the Nationals. He has dropped his ERA below 4.00 again after a season-high spike on Sept. 1. The Mets are -165 home favorites.

Boof Bonser (Minnesota Twins) - The Twins have won Bonser`s last four starts and the right-hander has been dominant against some hot hitting lineups. He reached a career-high for innings pitched in Wednesday`s 8-2 win over Boston with a seven-inning effort and is a -207 favorite today against Royals starter Jorge De La Rosa.

Jason Schmidt (San Francisco Giants) - Schmidt hasn`t lost since Aug. 29 and missed the decision by one out in his last start, a 7-4 Giants victory over the Rockies. He sports a 15-6 career record against the Diamondbacks and is 2-0 on the season. San Francisco is favored at -161.

Esteban Loaiza (Oakland Athletics) - Loaiza has been on a tear lately and has only lost once in the past two months. He allowed eight runs to Tampa Bay on Sept. 9, but have not surrendered more than two in any other game since Aug. 13. With only 145.2 innings pitched on the season after an early-season DL stint, Loaiza doesn`t have fatigue worries as the season comes to a close. Loaiza has earned 6.41 units in 2006. Oddsmakers have not yet set a line for today`s game at Seattle.

                        Cold streak

Tim Wakefield (Boston Red Sox) - Wakefield hasn`t fared well since his return from the disabled list, losing both starts with a 9.72 ERA and .429 opponent batting average. He was tagged for six earned runs in just 3 1/3 innings on Tuesday. The Red Sox are +117 road dogs today in Toronto. Wakefield has not faced the Blue Jays this season.

David Wells (San Diego Padres) - Wells allowed a season-high 11 hits on Wednesday in an 8-2 loss to the Diamondbacks. He hasn`t won in three starts and is 0-2 with a 4.43 ERA in four games since a trade to the Padres. Wells has burned 2.69 units of bettors` money on the season and is dogged today (+116) in St. Louis.

                        Other notables

Jon Garland (Chicago White Sox) - Garland has dropped his past two starts after posting a 12-2 record in the previous three months.

Bronson Arroyo (Cincinnati Reds) - Arroyo had a nasty outing on Sept. 20, surrendering seven earned runs in five innings, but dominated in his previous three starts. He threw at least eight innings in each start and allowed only two earned runs from Sept. 5-15

                          LINE WATCH

New York at Tampa Bay – New York -150

The honeymoon is over for the New York Yankees and it’s time to get prepared for the playoffs.

New York has suffered a big hangover since clinching the AL East, losing three of their last four games. This slide has allowed the Detroit Tigers to grab the best record in the American League, which would give them home-field advantage for the AL Championship series.

Yankees manager Joe Torre reminded his team that there is plenty of baseball left in the season and emphasized the importance of home-field advantage in the playoffs.

"There is something about concentration in games like this, and that`s not taking anything away from the Devil Rays," Torre told the New York Post. "The intensity of how you go about it is nothing you`re going to have a meeting [about] and beat the hell out of them. They know what`s important. Yes, it`s important but sometimes there are things that sometimes when the urgency is there, we seem to play better."

Arizona at San Francisco – Arizona +153

The biggest question in San Francisco is not whether the Giants will squeak into the NL Wild Card spot, but rather, the future of Barry Bonds.

The Giants seem to have closed the door on their postseason hopes after officially being eliminated from the AL West race, but still have a slim chance of grabbing the Wild Card spot if they can close the seven-game gap between themselves and the Philadelphia Phillies. San Francisco has switched focus to next season’s team and is apparently lying down for the remainder of the schedule.

“Too bad a club like [ours] struggled at the end, when it was making an offensive to the playoffs," manager Felipe Alou told the San Francisco Chronicle. "They just got bogged down and could not advance anymore."

Staff ace Jason Schmidt takes the mound for the conceding Giants, having struggled in his last seven starts. The right-hander has only two wins in that span, posting a 4.88 ERA.

Oakland at Seattle – Oakland -135

Boy, are the Oakland A’s excited to see the Mariners.

After failing to clinch the AL West in its last two games, Oakland rolls into Seattle winning 16 straight against the Mariners. The A’s dropped back-to-back games versus the Los Angeles Angels, keeping their magic number at two.

"I think a lot of the questions being asked about where do you want to clinch and the celebration is getting in some people`s heads," right fielder Milton Bradley told reporters. "Guys take it for granted we`re just going to get it done."

Oakland will give the ball to the surging Esteban Loaiza for tonight’s game. The A’s starters are 14-1 against the M’s with a 2.16 ERA this season. Loaiza has been Oakland’s best pitchers recently, winning seven of his last 10 starts with a 2.61 ERA during those games.
