Nice little write up on the game tonight..

FACTS & STATS: Site: Mackay Stadium (31,900) -- Reno, Nevada. Television: ESPN2. Home Record: Northwestern 1-1, Nevada 1-0. Away Record: Northwestern 1-0, Nevada 0-2. Neutral Record: Northwestern 0-0, Nevada 0-0. Conference Record: Northwestern 0-0, Nevada 0-1. Series Record: First-ever meeting.

GAME NOTES: Having picked up their first win of the 2006 campaign last Saturday, the Nevada Wolf Pack shoot for two in a row Friday night as they take on the visiting Wildcats of Northwestern in a non-conference bout from Mackay Stadium in Reno. Nevada kicked off the season with a Western Athletic Conference setback to Fresno State, 28-19, which meant from week one the team was facing an uphill battle. The Pack then got crushed by Arizona State on the road, 52-21, before capturing a 28-10 triumph against Colorado State this past weekend at home. As for the Wildcats, they defeated Miami-Ohio in their opener, 21-3, but then slipped up versus New Hampshire (34-17), a team that has now outscored its first two opponents by a combined 96-24. Northwestern capped off the two-game homestand last Saturday by grabbing a 14-6 win against Eastern Michigan. With Big Ten Conference play looming, the Wildcats do not play at home again until October 14 when they settle in versus Purdue. This game represents the first-ever meeting between these two schools on the gridiron.

Mike Kafka and Andrew Brewer combined to hit 16-of-26 passes for 110 yards against the Eagles, throwing one interception and being sacked two times. But their importance was not limited to staying in the pocket because they both scored a touchdown on the ground for the Wildcats. The team as a whole gained 156 yards on 44 carries, keeping the ball moving as they found success on 8- of-17 third down chances. Kafka, who is second on the team at the moment with his 164 yards rushing, has completed 62.7 percent of his pass attempts for an average of 118.3 ypg. However, he has just one passing score against a pair of interceptions and the team's 129.7 ypg through the air rank last in the Big Ten and 108th nationally heading into this week. The unit is also last in the conference in total offense (308.3 ypg) and scoring (17.3 ppg). The team's most accomplished receivers, Shaun Herbert and Rasheed Ward have combined for 24 receptions for 173 yards, but neither has made it into the end zone.

The Eagles posted field goals in the first and second quarters, but that's as good as it got for EMU which was held to a mere five first downs. Even more impressive than holding the Eagles to just 87 yards rushing was the fact that Northwestern permitted the visitors to produce a meager 47 yards passing and managed to pick off a pair of passes in the process. By holding EMU to just two field goals, the Wildcats have now held two teams without a touchdown in the same season for the first time since 1995. Nick Roach leads the team in tackles with 27, with 17 of those coming unassisted. Corey Wootton (18 tackles) has a team-best 3.5 tackles for loss and is tied with Demetrious Eaton with a pair of sacks. With an average of just 4.3 TFLs per outing, the Wildcats are last in the Big Ten and 93rd in the country and the team's turnover margin (minus-1) is second to last in the league.

Although he was sacked twice and intercepted one time last Saturday, Jeff Rowe finally seemed comfortable within the offense as he converted 19-of-22 passes for 210 yards and a pair of scores. With only three incompletions, Rowe established a personal best with an .846 completion rate in the outing. Caleb Spencer responded with eight grabs for 78 yards in the win, extending his consecutive games streak with at least one reception to 26 games which is the longest active streak in the WAC and 10th longest in the nation at the moment. Now with an average of 5.8 catches per game for his career, Spencer is second in the country in that department. Across the board the Wolf Pack, which was picked to finish at the top of the WAC standings once again, is rather average in almost every offensive category. Robert Hubbard is first in rushing for the unit with 262 yards, while Rowe is second with his 106 yards. The signal-caller has completed an impressive 63.5 percent of his attempts thanks mostly to the CSU defense, but he has only five TDs, against three picks to show for his efforts.

Colorado State entered the game with Nevada as one of the top teams in a number of statistical categories, but the squad looked rather ordinary as it was limited to only 64 yards rushing and another 113 yards through the air. The Rams, who finished the contest 4-of-14 on third down, produced a total of just 10 first downs and controlled the ball for less than 26 minutes. Nick Hawthrone, who nearly returned an interception for a touchdown on Saturday, already has three INTs returned for TDs in his career, tying him for the active lead in Division I-A. Hawthrone, third on the team in tackles with 12, now has an interception and a fumble recovery for the unit. J.J. Milan has just seven total stops over three games, but of those three have come against the quarterback, ranking him third among the rest of the defenders in the WAC. Where the Pack really needs to pick up the slack is in TFLs where they rank 105th in the country with an average of just 3.7 per game.

Northwestern can turn up the heat on defense when needed, but the Wildcats can also be caught off guard by opponents that they should beat. This might be one of those games for the visitors, so expect Nevada to squeak by as Rowe and Spencer continue to produce.

They predicted a Nevada 27-20 win
