    Vir Vs G Tech

Virginia lost three assistant coaches last winter to head coach jobs, plus they took some more assistants with them, so Groh in position of having to coach the coaches. They're also using a cumbersome three-QB system, an idea that got David Cutcliffe fired at Ole Miss last year.

Georgia Tech has covered only 30% of its ACC home games of late (6-14) and is 3-8 vs spread on its Thursday ESPN appearances.

Virginia won last three series tilts, but lost at home to Western Michigan last week, after surviving Wyoming in OT the week before.

Sr QB Ball had 130 rushing yards in win over Troy last week. Home team covered seven of last eight series games.

Virginia at Georgia Tech (-17), total 39
        7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

The first conference game for each ACC Coastal rival, Georgia Tech takes to the road for the first time this year with hopes of ending Virginia`s three-game head-to-head winning streak. The Cavaliers have failed to cover in each of their games this season, but have won (and covered) in five of the last seven meetings between these foes.

The Ramblin` Wreck has cranked out over 200 rushing yards per game en route to their 2-1 record, but may look to target All-American receiver Calvin Johnson more often after completing just six passes to him over the last two games. Starting conference play should help - Johnson caught 21 passes for 367 yards and three touchdowns in his first three conference games last year.

                  THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21

                  Virginia at Georgia Tech
It wasn't so long ago that Virginia was a perennial Top 25 program with bowl aspirations. Now the Cavaliers are just lucky to pick up some wins. Last week Virginia reached rock bottom when it lost to Western Michigan at home, the first time the Cavs have lost to a MAC team in the school's history. Combined with a double-digit loss to Pitt (38-13) and a squeaker over Wyoming (13-12), it's certainly not the start coach Al Groh envisioned. To make matters worse, Groh was compelled to play his third-string QB in the second half of the Western Michigan game. It didn't help; the Cavs still went scoreless. That's the backdrop as UVA heads to Georgia Tech on Thursday night. The Yellow Jackets have rebounded from their opening loss to Notre Dame with wins over Samford and Troy. But the latter was not all that impressive as the two teams were tied going into the fourth quarter before Tech pulled away 35-20. Given that Tech's offense has been known to disappear at times as well, the Vegas line of 17 looks a little high even against a struggling UVA according to Dunkel, which has GT favored by 13. Dunkel Pick: Virginia (+17). Here are all of this week's Division I games.

                      Hot streaks

Nate Robertson (Detroit Tigers) - The Tigers are on the verge of a postseason berth and with Robertson on the hill they shouldn`t lose any ground. He`s 2-1 in his last three starts with a staggering 0.82 ERA while averaging just under five strikeouts. He`s a -123 favorite against the Orioles tonight.

Johan Santana (Minnesota Twins) - What more can you say about the Twins` play down the stretch? Santana should garner credit and attention for his always-stellar pitching, going 18-5 this season with a 2.77 ERA. When pitching under the lights he`s 9-2 and he`ll be looking for No. 10 tonight against Josh Beckett and the Boston Red Sox as a -160 favorite.

Anibal Sanchez (Florida Marlins) - Sanchez has been on a tear for the Marlins ever since he began starting. He`s 2-1 in his last three games with a 1.88 ERA averaging six strikeouts per start. He takes on Pedro Martinez tonight and the new NL East champion New York Mets where he`s 7-2 for the season. Oddsmakers have yet to release a line.

Chris Carpenter (St. Louis Cardinals) - The Cardinals look ready for another postseason run and Carpenter seems to be on the same page. He`s heating up quickly, going 2-0 in his last three starts while averaging over seven strikeouts with a 2.11 ERA. When pitching away from home this season he`s 7-3 and will look to add to that mark tonight as a -138 favorite against Andy Pettitte and the Houston Astros.

                      Cold streaks

Josh Beckett (Boston Red Sox) - Beckett has struggled through most of the second half of the season. He hasn`t posted back to back wins for the Red Sox since July 24 and has seen his season ERA balloon to 5.02. He hasn`t won at home since July 19 against the Royals and will have a tough time breaking that trend tonight against the red-hot Minnesota Twins.

Matt Morris (San Francisco Giants) - The Giants are trying desperately to keep pace in the National League Wild Card race and pitchers like Morris aren`t making it easy for them. Over his last three trips to the hill he`s 0-3 with a 7.00 ERA giving up almost as many walks as strikeouts. Oddsmakers have taken notice, making him a +118 underdog tonight against David Bush and the Milwaukee Brewers.

                      Other notables

Rich Harden (Oakland Athletics) - 3-0 this season with a 3.86 ERA.

C.C. Sabathia (Cleveland Indians) - 4-3 in afternoon games with a 2.00 ERA.

Andy Pettitte (Houston Astros) - 8-6 at home this season with a 3.93 ERA.

San Francisco at Milwaukee: Brewers -125

If Geoff Jenkins is indeed playing his final games as a Brewer, he’s going out in style.

Jenkins, who has spent his entire nine-year career in Milwaukee, is batting .500 (14-for-28) in his last nine games with five home runs and eight RBIs. On Wednesday he belted a ninth-inning walk-off homer to lift the Brewers to a 1-0 win over the Cardinals.

Jenkins lost his starting job in right field earlier this year and he is not expected to be a part of the Brewers’ plans for the 2007 season. But Milwaukee fans hope otherwise and have been carrying signs that read “Keep Jenkins” to Brewers home games throughout September.

“I`m going to enjoy the last 10 games I have and go out there and do the best I can,” Jenkins told MLB.com.

Arizona at San Diego: Diamonbbacks -102

The Padres can’t be happy about having to face Brandon Webb tonight.

Not only is Webb a Cy Young Award contender, but the D-Backs right-hander has also beaten the Padres three times this season.

In three starts against San Diego in ’06, Webb is 3-0 with a 3.80 ERA, earning a tidy three units in the process.

Also working in Webb’s favor is the fact Arizona has played the Padres very tough this year, winning eight of the 14 games the teams have played. The Diamondbacks were the underdogs in five of these wins, and the favorite in three.

Seattle at Chicago White Sox: Mariners +175

The White Sox are not yet mathematically eliminated from postseason contention, but it appears they have accepted the reality that they won’t get the chance to defend their World Series title in October.

“Trying to come back in the pennant race will be the hardest thing we`ve been doing in the three years I`ve been here,” Sox manager Ozzie Guillen told MLB.com. “With the way Minnesota has been playing, it`s highly unlikely (Chicago will make the playoffs), but you never know.”

The White Sox are coming off a home series versus Detroit in which they lost two of three. Chicago was the favorite in both defeats.

                            Minnesota at Boston: Twins -156

It’s safe to call the Twins road warriors.

Minnesota has been decent overall this year on the road, sporting a 40-37 record. But in the past couple of months they’ve been nearly unbeatable away from home.

In their last 29 road games, the Twins are 22-7. Among the wins are victories over the Red Sox in the first two games of this series (7-3 on Tuesday and 8-2 on Wednesday).

The wins earlier this week over Boston improved the Twins` record versus the Red Sox to a perfect 5-0 in 2006. Minnesota has earned 5.65 units in their victories over Boston, winning four times as underdogs and once as the favorite.
