Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...

    13) Glad to see Peter Gammons is returning to TV on the 6pm SportsCenter Wednesday, almost three months since after an aneurysm threatened his life. Very good news.

    12) The replay official who butchered the Oklahoma-Oregon game Saturday is same official who was the linesman at the Cal-Stanford game in '82; his key non-call allowed Bears to score one of most infamous TDs in college football history, as one of the Cal players who lateraled was down before he got rid of the ball, but it was never called.

    11) Josh Bard, Cla Meredith, Hanley Ramirez, Anibal Sanchez; all terrific young prospects traded away by the Red Sox since the end of last season. They gave Meredith away just to get Doug Mirabelli back from Padres. Not very good.

    10) The Ryder Cup is this weekend, but the race to secure a Tour card for '07 is also happening; #125 on the money list is Rich Beem, with $558,525 (he has an exemption for winning a major, so he's in no danger of losing his card). #126 is Duffy Waldorf, with $548,439. 71 guys have earned $1M+ in 2006.

    9) Call me crazy, but I'd rather watch the Texas Open from San Antonio than Ryder Cup. Something about guys playing for their careers is more interesting to me than team golf. It is an individual sport, which is why Eldrick Woods hasn't been the best Ryder Cupper in the past.

    8) Rumors are flying that Larry Coker will get a $3M buyout from Miami after the season. I have to get myself one of these jobs where they pay you millions to go away.

    7) When Virginia plays on ESPN Thuirsday, you'll see they've been using three QBs in every game; no idea how they think that is a good idea, but they've been doing in , in a 1-2 start.

    6) Morten Andersen is back with Falcons, after they missed four FGs Sunday, all on kicks of 40 or less yards. Andersen had contacted the Colts, since Adam Vinatieri is gimpy, but he's back with the Falcons, and will be their kicker Monday in New Orleans, another one of Andersen's old homes.

    5) Saints sold out all eight home games for first time ever.

    4) Billy Volek is finally out of Tennessee, as Chargers threw a sixth-round pick to Titans for him. Interesting to see who the Titans sign to be #3 QB; George Blanda? Sonny Jurgensen? Dan Pastorini? The possiblities are endless. Whomever it is has a shot at starting this season; Titans are that bad.

    3) Wake Forest os 3-0 for first time since '87, and they're 3-0 despite the starting QB breaking his arm in the opening win vs Syracuse. They haven't beaten any powerhouses, but at Wake Forest, 3-0 is never bad news.

    2) Unlike at Texas A&M, when the natives are still restless in wake of Aggies' 28-24 nail-biter over Army. A&M is 3-0, but somehow, Dennis Franchione's name is still in the "hot list" category. Big money creates stupid-high expectations. Fran stiffed the Alabama players when he bolted for A&M, so we would really like to see an A&M-Alabama bowl game.

    1) Duquesne basically recruited a news basketball team after they changed coaches, which revives an old argument-- for years, I said it would be easier to build a winning hoop team from scratch, than to try and turn around a losing program. No bad apples to fire, bad habits to eliminate, just find guys to play ball. Dukes will be an interesting study.

            THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21

            Virginia at Georgia Tech
It wasn't so long ago that Virginia was a perennial Top 25 program with bowl aspirations. Now the Cavaliers are just lucky to pick up some wins. Last week Virginia reached rock bottom when it lost to Western Michigan at home, the first time the Cavs have lost to a MAC team in the school's history. Combined with a double-digit loss to Pitt (38-13) and a squeaker over Wyoming (13-12), it's certainly not the start coach Al Groh envisioned. To make matters worse, Groh was compelled to play his third-string QB in the second half of the Western Michigan game. It didn't help; the Cavs still went scoreless. That's the backdrop as UVA heads to Georgia Tech on Thursday night. The Yellow Jackets have rebounded from their opening loss to Notre Dame with wins over Samford and Troy. But the latter was not all that impressive as the two teams were tied going into the fourth quarter before Tech pulled away 35-20. Given that Tech's offense has been known to disappear at times as well, the Vegas line of 17 looks a little high even against a struggling UVA according to Dunkel, which has GT favored by 13. Dunkel Pick: Virginia (+17). Here are all of this week's Division I games.

              Hot streaks

Bronson Arroyo (Cincinnati Reds) - After falling off the hot pitchers map for some time, Arroyo has come back in style. In his last three starts he`s been close to untouchable going 3-0 with a stellar 0.72 ERA. In three games this year against the Houston Astros he`s 2-1 but will be in tough today against Roger Clemens as a +126 underdog.

Boof Bonser (Minnesota Twins) - Bonser has turned things on for the Twins at the perfect time of the season. He hasn`t surrendered more than three runs since Aug. 2 against the Rangers and is 2-0 in his last three with a 2.37 ERA. Tonight he squares off against Curt Schilling and the Boston Red Sox as a +131 underdog.

Dontrelle Willis (Florida Marlins) - The Marlins still stand a slim chance of squeezing into the postseason and if anyone can get them there it`s Willis. He`s 2-1 in his last three with a 2.82 ERA, averaging over seven strikeouts per start. Tonight he`ll face off against the NL East champion New York Mets as a -117 favorite.

Jeff Suppan (St. Louis Cardinals) - The Cardinals have all but wrapped up the National League Central after a brief scare. Suppan is 2-0 in his last three games with a 1.35 ERA. St. Louis will hope he can continue to build momentum heading into the postseason tonight as a -120 favorite against the Milwaukee Brewers.

              Cold streaks

Curt Schilling (Boston Red Sox) - The last time Schilling earned a win for the Red Sox they were still in the playoff hunt. He`s suffered a string of losses and no decisions since the beginning of August and has seen his season ERA rise to 4.12. Tonight he`s at home where he`s 8-1.

Greg Maddux (Los Angeles Dodgers) - The Dodgers were hoping to have the NL West wrapped up by now but find themselves leading the Wild Card race by one game over the Phillies. Maddux is 1-2 in his last three starts and is a -219 favorite against Shawn Chacon and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

              Other notables

Roger Clemens (Houston Astros) - 6-5 record with a 2.52 ERA. Averaging over six strikeouts per start in his last three.

Roy Halladay (Toronto Blue Jays) - 8-3 at home this season and 11-2 in night games.

Jon Garland (Chicago White Sox) - 6-2 at home this season with a 3.76 ERA.

                        LINE WATCH

                        Cincinnati at Houston: Houston -130

Call it old fashioned or sentimental but you just can’t resist taking Roger Clemens in what could be his final game in Houston.

After joining the team midseason, The Rocket has been up and down the past four months, posting a 6-5 record with a 2.52 ERA. Clemens hasn’t ruled out playing for another year, but will likely seek greener pastures in hopes of another World Series ring.

"It doesn`t even enter into my mind right now," Clemens told the Houston Chronicle of today’s start. "If it is, it`s great, and we`ll make the most of it. My main focus is making sure my body is right to handle what it needs to do."

Clemens is 21-10 in Houston in his three years with the Astros, but hasn’t posted a win in Minute Maid Park since Aug. 10.

New York at Toronto: New York +185

The possibility of Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay winning 20 games leapt out the window last week, but the Cy Young nominee may be more concerned with the fact that he may not see another win this season.

Halladay is winless in his last five starts despite posting a 2.50 ERA during this skid, forcing Blue Jays backers to look at the drop in run production as the culprit.

Toronto has given its star hurler on 2.8 runs per game in his last five appearances and is the fourth worst American League team in run production this past month. The Blue Jays averaged 6.23 runs per game in Halladay’s first 26 starts.

Pittsburgh at Los Angeles: Pittsburgh +197

Pirates manager Jim Tracy is wrapping up the 2006 season just the way he wanted. His young team has put together four wins and has been victorious in seven of their last 10 games, including the pounding they gave the Los Angeles Dodgers last night.

"They have a better understanding of how to win," Tracy told MLB.com. "There are markers that point towards the fact that they`ve gained a much better understanding of what we are about, collectively. Regardless of the opponent we`re playing, I want to see us continue to step in the right direction."

The biggest reason for the Bucs` late surge is the stellar pitching of the Pittsburgh rotation. The Pirates starting pitchers have only allowed nine runs in the last seven games for an impressive ERA of 1.72.
