  • Greastest finishes in baseball history

    My opinion:

    1. Bobby Thomson hits HR in bottom of ninth to give 51 Giants NL pennant

    2. Kirk Gibson hits bottom of ninth HR off Eckersley to lead Dodgers to World Series Game 1 win over Oakland

    3. Fisk and Carbo hit late game HRs to give 75 Red Sox Game 6 World series win over Reds

    4. Last night, Dodgers hit four consecutive ninth inning HRs to tie Padres and then a two run HR in tenth to win.

Last night's finish was one for the ages and deserves to be included with the other great finishes in history.

I can't argue with your top 4 but from an emotional standpoint and being in NY on 9/11 and at Shea for the first game back following the week off, Piazza's bomb against Atlanta to win in the bottom of the 9th still brings chills and brought tears to many in the stands that night.

I know it probably doesn't rank up there with those... but Atlanta going down 4 in the top of the 10th only to score 5 and win after tying it up in the 8th or 9th the other night... just a great fight from a team who has absolutely nothing to play for for the first time in 15 years

I think the fact that they had 4 consecutive homeruns is the main reason it will be remembered, andof course because of the importance in the standings.
If LA had been down 4 runs in the bottom of the ninth and then someone hit a grandslam to tie it and then Nomar hit a two run dinger to win it, then it would just go down as a great comeback win in an important game.

There was a game a couple years ago when I had OVER 9.5 in an LA-SF duel in Chavez Ravine.

SF took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth. How in the world could I win the over play you ask? I'll tell you.

The Dodgers loaded the bases, and with three consecutive singles, tied the game at 3-3. Then Steve Finley hit the Grand Slam that propelled the Blue to a 7-3 victory, and more importantly, ano OVER winner for me.

Another similar finish was in the '98 playoffs, Atlanta at Shea v the Mets, with a total set at 7.5. Tie game, 3-3 in the 11th or so, bases fully juiced--when Robin Ventura cranked one out of the yard, an apparent Grand slam and a 7-3 final. But the jubilant teammates came to mob Ventura at first, and the only run that counted was the first one, so it went down as a 4-3 win, and the world's longest single, screwing all the OVER players and Mets RL players who thought they jusrt received a gift miracle win.
You can't always get what you want, but if you try some time, you might find, you get what you need.

I will never forget Kirk Gibson's HR.

              I don't believe what I just saw!

What was shocking about it was the Dodgers hit 4 homers on 5 pitches. The game went from 10-6 to tie game so quickly it was shocking.

I was there. It was the last game I attended as a season ticket holder after 6 years.

I'm not sure how you can not include the Mets winning Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, being that it was a post season game and they were one out away from elimination.

That isn't to say it wasn't dramatic, I just thought because it was an error that it didn't belong on the top 5 lists...personally, it is #1...but overall endings without an emotional attachment, I don't think it is top 5....

I am biased to Robin Ventura's GRAND SLAM SINGLE in 1999 NLCS vs Braves, (even though mets lost the series)
                          Good Luck to everyone

Richie: Something that makes your pee-pee smaller.
