                        Streaking Pitchers

                        Hot Streaks

Matt Cain (San Francisco Giants) – Cain has been simply incredible lately. In his last four outings, he hasn’t given up a single earned run. He is 5-0 with an astounding 0.21 ERA. He will look to extend his shutout streak tonight against the Colorado Rockies with the Giants listed as -125 favorites.

Chuck James (Atlanta Braves) – James has quietly worked his way into Rookie of the Year contention with some stellar performances recently. He is 6-0 with a 1.52 ERA in his last seven trips to the mound improving to 10-3 with a 3.33 ERA on the season. In his last start he went seven strong innings and allowed just five hits and no earned runs. The Braves are -132 against the Nationals tonight.

                        Cold Streaks

Edinson Volquez (Texas Rangers) – As a starter this season, Volquez is 1-5 with a 6.15 ERA and has pitched past the fifth inning just once. He has lost four games in a row, posting an ugly 8.93 ERA over that stretch. Volquez takes the hill against the Seattle Mariners tonight with the Rangers priced at -124.

Jarrod Washburn (Seattle Mariners) – Washburn is 0-2 with an awful 6.88 ERA over his last three trips to the mound. He allowed six earned runs in two of those three outings including his last start where he gave up six earned runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings against the Kansas City Royals. The Mariners are listed at +116 for tonight’s matchup with the total set at 10 ½.

                        Other notables:

Freddy Garcia (Chicago White Sox) – Garcia took a no-hitter into the eigth inning of his last start.

Cliff Lee (Cleveland Indians) - Lee is 2-0 with a 2.12 ERA in his last three starts.

                          MLB Line Watch

Atlanta at Washington – Braves -129

                          Chipper Jones is a professional.

So it shouldn’t surprise anyone the Atlanta Braves slugger is remaining focused despite the Braves missing the playoffs for the first time in his career.

“We`re trying to salvage some pride,” Jones told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “If we can`t make the playoffs, we at least need to try to get over .500. That`s something to play for and something that is attainable.”

And it looks like Jones will be able to help the Braves attain that goal now that he’s expecting to be taken off the 15-day DL as early as Tuesday.

That’s not good news for the Washington Nationals. The 34 year-old Jones was hitting .318 with 79 RBIs and 23 home runs this season, helping the Braves win seven in a row before he was injured.

Seattle at Texas – Mariners +115

Jarrod Washburn has not been at his best recently, going 1-2 over his last three starts while giving up an average of five runs.

But fortunately for backers, Washburn has not been as bad versus the Texas Rangers this season, posting a 2.08 ERA and holding the hard-hitting Rangers to just a .208 batting average.

This includes a 3-2 win over the Rangers two weeks ago in which Washburn lasted six innings while striking out five and walking only two.

And for those of you not sold on Washburn and the Seattle Mariners, just look at the numbers for his Texas counterpart, Edinson Volquez. In six starts this season, the youngster is just 1-5 with a 6.15 ERA.

San Francisco at Colorado – Giants -120

                          Can anyone hit Matt Cain?

Not by the looks of things after the San Francisco Giants rookie extended his shutout streak to four games with an eight-inning, seven-strikeout performance in a 5-0 win over these same Colorado Rockies last Thursday.

“He`s put together a good run,” catcher Mike Matheny told the Sacramento Bee. “He`s shown all of us. You can see the confidence.”

This confidence has seen Cain win 13 games and record 163 strikeouts this season, both tops amongst all rookies, while holding opponents to a .208 average, the lowest among all National League pitchers.

And including his last start, Cain is 3-0 versus the Rockies this season, lasting an average of seven innings while recording at least eight strikeouts.
